Did you know that for every time you hit a swamp hydra with a missile weapon or block them (maybe even melee with close combat weapons too) you lose 6 points instead of the usaul 1 point?
So what I do is find a 3 square body of water in a row to provide cover and then I unleash hell onto this hydra with all the ammunition I can carry (usually with slings as you can get hundreds of rocks) and before I know it I'm weapon skill level 10 with it!

That's probably because the swamp hydra has alot higher level than you. You get more marks from monsters that have higher level than you, ya know. :)

Yeah but don't you think they're really cool for training with??
You have to be fairly fast though and swimming saved my life a couple of times.
I class training with Hydras as an art form now - it takes cunning strateigic planning and great intelligence.

Sure they do Stas, people just don't read the formating help it seems...

Throw in a couple of [pre][/pre] tags (in upper case) and wolla:

;)

Ok so I you have to do the coloring yourself (to much work if you ask me, whew!) but the formating and font and all is taken care of by the PRE's...

Hmm, now all I need is a tag to make the background color black...

[did that :)]

Yeah well, swamp hydras seems kinda rare, at least for me, so I'll stick to the standard "hack 'n slash lots of enemies". ;)

Swamp hydras are not rare at all. From Terinyo you just nip down to the local swamps (near the dwarven graveyard) and hang around there for a while and then you should encounter one (or an undead encounter if your unlucky).

Thanks for making my drawing look better Jan Erik!

I don't like spending too much time on the worldmap 'cus then I easly get 90+ days in game time. Unless I have seven league boots perhaps. But in general I think wandering around on the worldmap to encounter this and that enemy is a waste of time, unless you're really desperat after one. :)

You don't need to spend long there either.
You just head down until you meet the swamps, walk around there a bit and you'll get an encounter of hopefully a hydra.
I'd say only 2 hydras would do to take you up to level 8 from 0 with any missile weapon. And you'd only 'waste' 5 days max, which to me sounds like a bargin!!

Well there's another drawback with it. SMC gets ALOT tougher when the PC is level 8 instead of 0 when entering. And I like exploring SMC, getting the blanket and finding the stair down to UD.

Level 8 from 0 as in Weapon Skills not Exp! That is why it is so good because you don't sacrifice any quest etc just greatly enhance your missile weapons.
No vortex is gonna f*ck with you ever again!
Thanks for the info Jan Erik.

Great intellegence , yeah you wish! I always used to play with the hydras, with wimpy PCs.
ANyway I have one thing to say abou the assisan quest (has nothing to do with hydras, I know)to get to that level all you need to do is disarm all the traps and keep going down until your in.
The mad musican sings about "..cave were dwarves rarely scave." for the Emperor Moloch. PS I trained PC's stats using fire bolt casted at hydra.

Prickle Pear, wrote the one above, trust me I know. I like shooting at black dragons, they're always rare unless its dragon or sword.

By the way, In the newest version you also get greater amount of exp, if you are much slower than your opponent. So try practising your weaponskills with low char with hydra.
