I found a ki-rin or something like that in the dwarven halls... it seems to be lawful, like me, and it's not hostile... should I kill it? Is it too tough?

Kill it?

Ki-rin? You plan to attack it? Nice way to kill yourself. If you can kill emperor liches with absolutly no effort, greater molochs are a thing you walk over, and balors make you laugh - go ahead, kill it. It's just the strongest, non-unique monster in the game, so why be afraid of it? ;P

maelstrom, what are you talking about?! I came across a ki-rin in infinity... I killed it so easily with two hits. This character had trouble beating molochs too. Balors are the hardest IMHO.

Infinity is a lot easier than DH. Ki-rin confuse, stun, are immune to fire, lighting, acid and ice, cast Death Ray and Heal AND regenerate themselves. The Ki-tin you found must have been very inexperianced, because those I meet can take down lvl 50 chars with not much effort. And balors make me laugh all the time I'm over lvl 14. So do molochs.

Killing balors are easy. I usually take my first one about level 13. (With phase daggers). Greater molochs give me trouble tho...

I haven't even heard of, or met, a Ki-rin

It's one of the rarest monsters - lawfull, and as I said - cast Death Ray, heals, renerates and immune to everything ;) The main problem with it, is that it confuses like Emperor Liches.

Is there any way of avoiding confusing attacs and/or spells

Confusion resistance (rings of mental satability) help, but there is no sure way - you'll get confused anyway from time to time. It's good to have willpower on high levels (like over 40) and 3 or more confusion resistance granting items.

The first time I ever made it to some lower levels in the CoC in 099g15 I ran into a ki-rin and had no idea how dangerous it was. Just kept beating it for a while with my barbarian and noticed that it took pretty many hits. Then after a few rounds it confused me and hit me with a couple of death rays. Was resistant but still those things hurt and did kill me. Have only met one ki-rin after that, but I rarely get far enough in the game to have any chance of finding them(except DH).

I've beat the game lots of time, and haven't run into one....

Oh yeah, Greater Balors are harder (and not unique, if you pray in the Chaos world... thing)

How can you say that greater balors are harder if you've never met a ki-rin? :)

Greater balors gave me alot of trouble, but they are easy when you drink 5 potions of boost speed. :)

Balors in general can be tough, especially if they happen to summon tough monsters. As usual, slaying ammo is very useful.

If somebody really wants to find out how tough that ki-rin is, wish for one in the SMC! I tried it after winning the game w/ a saved character. My guess is that the summoned ki-rin (which was immediately hostile) was level 100+ and had 3000HP, hit 14 times and kicked my Fistantanius-slayer character like a shitbucket. He died in one round.

That tough is a ki-rin.

Compared to a balor or g-moloch or whatever, that is wished at SMC it was...unique...

That's more than a lvl ~118 GM that I once wished for and checked with a stethoscope. IIRC that one hit 12 times. That high level monsters are pretty tough because all of their hits are critical hits.

Hm, wonder how many microseconds that character lasted? :)

I've encountered a ki-rin only once, with a save-scummed level 43 wizard. I had resistance to pretty much everything available, and double confusion resistance, as well as a willpower around sixty, so it wasn't any harder to defeat than the average greater moloch. I used phase daggers, I think. Or maybe the Twins? I forget. At any rate, it wasn't too deadly.

That character survived, kills a couple of ki-rins, became fallen champion cause forgot that killings lawful creatures is evil and even won a game... :-)

You must be pretty good, then... I've been playing ADoM for two years, and my best character only retrieved two orbs and lasted to the mid-twentieth level... I'm getting better though; this week four of my characters reached level 17, and one reached 20.

I've got a while yet before I have to worry about ki-rin!

Can you wish for specific figurines of wonderous power? :P Must go test it myself...

EDIT: No, apparently you can't wish for specific figurines. When wished for it does nothing. You can only wish for them as 'figurines of wondrous power'.

So Ki-rins are strong, but how fast are they? I am just curious in case I ever run into one and it decides to eat me.

Was that a ki-rin room? They seem pretty low level, compared what I once encountered. But if you add all their spells and abilities to that, they make formidable foes indeed.

BTW: Just got my NWN CDs back, gotta start some serious modding now! Tons of ideas from ADOM and other great games!

Re Ass Whisper
that tension room was at CoC D:45 or D:46 (just before unreal cave system)

maybe they seem low level (luckily CoC D:45 is not a SMC :D) but their regeneration rate, spells and attacks per round makes them very difficult opponents
"my" ki-rins have three or four attacks per round so one of them can confused me, cast heal, attack in melee and cast death ray (in one round - and still getting natural regeneration)
