herbalism. for sure. You'll find troll blood potions more often than you'll find herbs, holy water, and identification. Get herbalism, help out those oh so important stats. Sickness curing, poison relief, satiation, and healing all make herbalism the right choice.

Healing. All the way. Beats Herbalism hands down later in the game. Even without the Herbalism skill, you can still collect herbs for the stats and healing and it's a rather simple thing to uncurse them. That and finding herbs is a hit or miss proposition, some games lots are generated, other games only 3-4 levels have herbs. Healing is always helpful, cuts down on recovery time between fights.
Oh, and Maelstrom, I hate you for being this lucky that far into a game! Just kidding! :-)

I'd say that late game herbalism is more useful. Regeneration items are sure to be found at some point of the game. In fact, healing pretty much loses it's edge once you find spenseweed with herbalism.

Having said that, I myself always pick healing.

If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Healing. By end game, healing will have probably have saved your life a few times. You could learn Herbalism with a wish, but that somewhat of a waste.

Well, I'll go for herbalism this time - blessed speensweed saved my ass more times that I can imagine (mostly in Dark Forge, in the late 20') and that willpower is a problem (confusion is a pain).
So it's Herbalism this time. Forgot about one thing - the free artefact and Potion of Cure Corruption that the driud gives. Both I have now, and am very happy with it :D Going to the Pyramid, so I can kill the mummy.

The stone blocks suddenly hitting your head are even more annoying. Lost several great gray elven wizzies to that.
