I've got this female dark elf assassin who's about level 20 i think. i need the fire orb now to decend any further but faced real problems in the tower.
i read in the guide that darkforge is a good place to test your character so went there before. i emptied the place quite nicely (chaos knight whacked in 2 turns dropped all his eternium kit which was nice) but the tower was really quite hard. she has all stats between 20 and 30 (and speed of 107), level 11 with swords, knives and pole-arms (either twin daggers of death, long sword of mayhem and eternium shield or Long Sting) and DV/PV of around 50/20 with the eternium platemail/medium shield/boots and a few other nice bits and pieces.
the problems was the demons and grues, who seemed to be able to see invisible (got it intrinsic from a pool). she drinks poison for breakfast and restores 1 hit point roughly per turn minmum but thanks to the snake from beyond and those damn grues she has 4 corruptions (teleporting, many eyes, thin and nimble [her first corruption and one i'd like to keep], and super healing). i'm not worried about the damage from poison or hits but i can't get past them without getting some serious corruption.
should i try to beef her up some more and waste precious time or just go for it and clear up the numerous corruptions i'll receive afterwards (6 scrolls of chaos resistance and a potion of cure corruption stashed away)
(and another thing, is it worth risking my seven league boots in there, they're blessed but i only have a blessed fireproof blanket for protection)

The only monster that can see you is the snake, but fighting does reveal your position. The ultimate way to kill the snake is of course slaying ammunition because of the corruption. Once the snake is down, pick up the orb and run. Other strategies include massive use of ice spells/wands and being really overleveled supermonster. If you can't pick the snake from afar, then I guess you have to grit your teeth and melee...

Don't risk those boots! Blessed ring of ice might change that rule, but if you don't have one, don't wear things other than artifacts or non-iron stuff. (Rings under non-melting gauntlets are safe)

Imagine a carmic popsicle -
First it is red and tastes like strawberry. Then it turns blue and tastes like blueberry. And if someone takes it from ye, he or she gets cursed and doomed.

The ToEF is where my last PC got the worst corruption. I had to kill all of the grues and demons and such, then run back and heal before i went back in and did it again. Cold Bolt will help.

Hmmm... have you done the library yet? I did that before the ToEF. Just get you climbing skill to 100 and your willpower above 20. If its not, you can just put the Water Orb in the tool part of your inventory. I wouldnt even go near the ToEF without a blessed Ring of Ice and the Elemental gauntlets. If you haven't gotten those yet, get them first.

So, your problem is corruption from the enemies right? You will just need to switch to missiles and magic then. Also, don't attack anything that doesn't attack you first.

Forget about leveling up the knife throwing and go with bow and arrows. Elves are good archers. Plus, there are no 'knives of slaying' that I know of (anyone know for sure?). Go barbarian hunting in the wilderness for lots of arrows. You will probably get arrows of slaying. Then just hope for a better bow then those short bows they drop.

Use your stun bolts and magic missiles liberally. Since you said you don't know where magic missile came from I'm guessing you got it from wielding a WoW. Therefore you must only be able to use it a few times. You might not have enough. Try to find some more spellbooks first. If you pick up all the stuff in a shop and place it in a far corner the shopkeeper will restock. Other then that you'll just have to hope for the best.

Against the chaos wyrm, rely on arrows and have magic as backup. If you can find arrows of slaying then great, if not then it's still good. It usually takes me 3-4 arrows of dragon slaying to finish him. With regular arrows it takes me 20-30. As you're shooting him, slowly back out of the chamber and lead him away from the other enemies. This will keep you from getting surrounded and help you maintain a clear shot. Don't forget to switch to aggressive (F1) as you shoot and coward (F7) as you cast magic/retreat.

BTW, only the chaos wyrm and the chaos servants can see invisible. Just kill the orange 'C's that are in your way then concentrate on the chaos wyrm. If you use magic that goes in a straight line (as opposed to ball-types) the other enemies wouldn't be able to see you (I think).

Well, everything else has been said, except this:
The chaos wyrm isn't a great dodger, so you can take it easily in melee if you just have a wand of paralyzation, you just need few charges if you want to hit him. He stays paralyzed about 10 turns, so you have just enough time to whack him out... if you can hit hard, that is. The same applies to almost every monster in the game. ;)

yeah i've got the elemental gauntlets. i didn't realise that the tactics settings affected missiles too. i guess the quarrels of slaying i already have will be enough then once i've trained crossbows up some. is WoW wand of wishing or wonder 'cause i've only got the later.

i guess it's my own personal luck and the lack of it

cheers guys

Well, WoW can mean wand of wishing, but he's talking about a wand of wonder (someones gotta figure out a way to change one of those.) correct me if im wrong, but i think wands of wonder give you small amounts of random spells, right? Has anyone ever gotten wish?

Yeah, sorry but I forgot about wand of wishing. I was refering to the wand of wonder. I think I'll just start typing it out from now on. :)

I got wish once for my trollish healer. Completely useless! You'll think you can get at least one wish, right? Nope, it just says 'nothing happens'. I went to look in my magic screen and there it was at the bottom, wish with 11 uses. Guess how many uses I have left right now?

11.

Useless!

woo hoo!

well after a break for exams i finally did it. all it took to kill that damn wyrm was about 5 hits from a wand of cold and 2 whacks from my eternium 2h sword. it was quite dramatic actually. having no ring of ice i teleported around to find the stairs and left monster of their own devices. i dug over to the wyrm blasted and whacked it, killed the demons that were loooming over me and... my blessed fire proof blanket went up in smoke. so i had to pick up the goodies left by the wyrm and leg it down stairs. lost half the wands i took with me, a lot of arrows (no fancy ones luckily) and the wyrm's corpse (you would have thought it would have been fire proof) but managed to get out with most my nice, flammable stuff intact. i feel quite proud of myself now.

my character is only level 24, should i carry on with the rest of the temples or gain more experience. i'm in the air temple and feel a little outclassed concidering how far down she is

The air temple is just like TOEF, it destroys items. But you can't do anything about it in there, so I'd just store the real important items (that you don't need to battle) somewhere.

Especially those 7LBs. even though there might be a lot of corruption down there, its better to have those boots, then get them destroyed. Congradulations on the ToEF!

yeah the air temple was relatively easy nad i took more damage/corruption from the vapour rats than the grus and demons and the summoner guy was unbelievably easy to splat.
the earth temple was a pain but got through that ok by luring the stone grues and elementals down the to next level in ones and twos. the ancient stone beast was quite tough but fell to my bow and slaying ammo
the mana temple was just as easy too, the archmage guy keep casting darkness and firing energy balls at my character while i stood a few squares away firing slaying ammo into him. i didn't actually clear it out because the chaos wizards were summoning far too much. plus i picked up bracers of war just after. woohoo

IIRC the Worm is HARD, the rest just adds exp pts, 1 good frost bolt +34 or so, and you get 3 lvs, then clear it for the goodies, but the best, before the casino, a greater undead vault, with a few lich king masters, kings, and super but whippin' liches, RotCM helped NONE

That was interesting, I had a lvl 25 gnome wizard, I went to the ToeF, and all I lost was a girdle of carrying (I had 2 more stashed in the CoC) and a cloak of protection +3 (not too hard to come by) and I turned invisible, and killed the ancient wyrm thing with some ice balls, (I had to pray once because he took 3/4 my health) so I stepped onto the place where I killed him to loot, then got sacrificed :'(

You wish to kill me? Good thing I brought my psychic hamster named Hamster with me...

The problem is with the ice ball. When you hit monsters with ball spells while invisible, they'll suddenly learn your position and learn to follow you despite not seeing you.

If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.
