I don't know if it is just me....or if it is just ADOM....or a combination of both. I have been playing ADOM for a year....minus the 11 month period where I stopped playing it so..about a month in reality. I have made countless characters of countless race/class combinations. The farthest I have ever gotten was to the Animated Forest on a Trollish Barbarian, level 12. Also I didn't even enter the CoC yet on a level 15 Gnomish Wizard who died from a jackal demon on the first level of the pyramid. I play 4-5 hours a day. Thats a lot of time when you add it up. Someone compare their success to mine and tell me why I suck so much. ;-)

It took me about a year of fairly solid playing (about 7-8 hours a day on average:) and Ive finished it twice(First was a monk, second necromancer) Have you looked at the guide, it helps alot (just read the bits your have already been up to)
Also the most important thing when I'm playing is to look at the weight of objects, if its twice its normal weight its crystal (and I love crystal shields) and if its less than normal its at least mithril and therefore better than normal.
Good combos orc monks born in candle (Fast heal and find weakness with weapon sac:)
Drakish Paladins any sign (My Ex always played these really strong fighters with magic as back up)
Oh and learn to use herbs they are almost something I cant live with out(25 toughness is so cool)

I have read pretty much every page of the guide, some parts 10-20 times. I have it open at ALL times while I am playing ADOM. I don't know why, but for some reason I hate playing fighter type characters. I find caster types to be much more interesting. I might try that Orc Monk in the Candle though, haven't tried a monk yet. I wanted to beat it with a Gnomish Wizard first but oh well. Oh, also, double the weight could mean it has the heavy prefix too. But thanks anyhow, I always check the weight. Could be eternium, adamantium or anything.

7-8 hours a day for a year is beastly....I hope to beat it long before that. =). Thanks for the advice and good luck on beating it with another class.

Some times being depressed with no job is useful :(
Oh I always go though the SMC just because if you manage to come out the other side your bound to do quite well (Higher percentage of cool stuff is found in the UD:)
Oh and worn boots are almost always the best item in the game IMHO
And always train your bow and crossbow skill because late game slaying ammo might be the only thing between you and a greater moloch.
In the begining I found human archers born in candle (I love this sign its almost the only one I play) to be quite strong (First time I got to TEF was with an archer.

In the first time after I started to play I savescummed a lot. But this way I at least got to see the other places and knew it was possible to win.
My first (and only) real win was about a year of not very regularly playing later with a gnomish elementalist, which I found a relativly easy character.
Just keep trying, I guess. It helps to play very carefully. My characters usually die because I'm not paying attention at some points, from threats that wouldn't have been impossible to master or avoid.

I play up to 2 hours once or twice a week, and all of my recent character either died in the SMC(that where I start out), or die in the late teens, because I do somthing stupid (like have my lvl 24 assassin enter the Greater Water Dragon Cave for the second time without remembering that I took off my helm of water breathing, and ignoring the messages about drowning :D ).
One win so far, was lucky enough to finish him in 5 days (real time) so I didn't forgot anything about him ;)

And I don't know about wizards, those die too fast. It's not like you can just press one button to clear a vault of dragons with them, is it? It's that way with barbarians... (yeah, me big, strong, dumb, and do big damage with me big weapon! Ugh! :P )

But...but...but...Wizards are so fun...and addictive! *thinks to himself for a moment* That is all of ADoM O.o Anyhow, I can't stand melee characters. There is just no strategy to them. I got a level 12 barbarian down to the Animated Forest and I was bored out of my mind. I have to play a Wizard, at least for the first time I beat it.

Once I do manage to finally beat it, I with try going through with a melee character. Not a tank like an Orc Barbarian, but more something like....a Drakeling Ranger.

Melee types need strategy as well as wizards. I fancy thieves, all that sneaky stuff and trap detection/disarming and stuff, but they require so much attention to keep alive. All my promising thieves have died due to my own carelesness.

Wizzies is the next best for me, but as Adom hates my guts, it always kills them with a stoneblock.

Thieves are fun to play, at low levels at least. Hurhtling thieves are so weak you have to run from everything bigger than a kobold, plus you have to check every door, untrap them, lock them when running away to slow down monsters, etc. Quite a different gaming experience than a trollish barbarian.

Cathan, you don't need to worry about sucking. I haven't won a single game without cheating and I've been playing for over two years. I probably should win sometime as I can get a char past the ToEF once in a while. I just usually get bored with the chars at some point and stop paying enough attention to what I'm doing, then I make some stupid mistake and die.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Wow....I was under the impression that most people on this forum can beat the game easily...I guess ADOM is just hard for everyone. Thanks J. I'll try a thief...why not? Its not like I HAVE to beat it with a Wizard first.

Here's my advice on general playing strategy, for the little it's worth ... I've only won once. These are open to contention, in fact I'd like someone to challenge me so I can improve a bit.

1) Be paranoid. Assume that every door is trapped with runes, assume every item you pick up (especially weapons) is cursed, assume every rat could make you sick, every bee could poison you, every unseen monster is a cat, every greater moloch about to critically hit you. It'll take you longer, but you'll survive.

2) Be a packrat. If you have the strength, pick it up, particularly if it's of an unusual weight.

3) Be pious. Find an altar and sacrifice until your god is kissing your feet. My personal advice is not to precrown if you're just going for a normal ending (no artifacts for the ratling), since it makes it harder to get to 'very close' status, which is handy for removing dooming. Don't be afraid to convert altars. It only takes about 3000 gold for lower levels. This is a good reason to do the Kranach quest if possible.

4) Have Herbalism if possible. Use herbs a lot. Read the herb section of the guidebook very carefully. Learn Conway's Rules of Life by heart.

5) Use potions. Bless all stat potions, especially gain attributes. If you have Alchemy, memorise your recipe for potions of gain attributes.

6) If you don't know what it is, don't use it unless you're absolutely desperate, or illiterate (and hence unable to identify the item).

7) Choose stat increases, especially Alert, as your starting talents, and get Affinity with your weapon, Miser, and then Treasure Hunter as your first three talents.

8) Wear the ankh. Also, wear the ankh. Finally, at all times, wear the ankh.

9) Do lots of runs through the infinite dungeon up to Level 9, while as lucky as possible, with the Treasure Hunter talent. Ignore the guidebook about carrying a si; do it anyway. They're good moneymakers before you get to the Casino.

10) If you're a spellcaster, train your magic missile first, elemental bolts second. Learn to cast it without hitting yourself. Use your Strength of Atlas spell, with care. Hold the Chaos Orb of Elemental Water while casting ball spells. Train the Acid Ball and Burning Hands spells in particular.

11) Save Khelavaster. You need those scrolls. Get the ones that the Mad Minstrel will give you, too. And the one in the higher mountain village.

12) Clear the Big Room with the doors-and-breeder trick, and use it as an armoury for your collected items, e.g. the ones you pick up on your infinite dungeon runs.

13) If your strength is below 20, carry stuff until you're *just* Burdened at all times. This means you can drop something unnecessary to run away, but at all other times will train your strength.

14) If you're a spellcaster, get the mana battery corruption, and do some infinite dungeon runs to get some junk wands to boost your mana. Keep the wands, too, just in case you find a cool one like a wand of destruction.

15) The Unremarkable Dungeon is excellent. Be lucky while exploring it to further increase chances of special locations being generated. Watch out for those door traps, though.

16) Ignore the guidebook about the ape corruption for spellcasters. It has one excellent use, if you're patient. Let it push your strength and toughness up at least a bit, which will ALSO push your strength potential up, while keeping your learning and willpower potential the same. You just have to have the patience to build them back up, which is not actually very hard to do if you have some spellbooks and morgia roots. Great for elves and smaller spellcasters.

17) Find some seven league boots, wear them, and bless them.

18) Don't fight Dorn Beasts, Molochs, Greater Titans/Molochs, or Doppleganger Kings if you can avoid it. Run away, or bolt them.

19) The Blue Dragon Caves are excellent for scumming, but the background corruption is high. Strike a balance based on your current situation.

20) Get Needle and Sting, even if you're not a knifeworker.

21) IF YOUR CONCENTRATION FALTERS, STOP PLAYING AND TAKE A BREAK. I lost a character to using fire in the animated forest once because I neglected to do this.

That's, uh, about it!

About 18)
Dorn beasts are wusses IF you have paralyze resistance. Make sure you always have at least one amulet of free action, and you're safe.
For doppelganger kings, there is an easy trick - they adjust to your DV, PV and To-hit. So have ~20 to hit, and 50+ DV and you're safe from them (kill the bastard with ball spells while your at it).
Molochs are slow, thus easy pray for demon slaying ammon and penetrating ammo.
Greater thingies always are dangerous, so you should avoid all thing with "greater" in the name (exception - greater demons are not too dangerous).

That's what I found out with an extremely (un)lucky, shield/spear wielding orcish barbarian, who had the (un)luck of getting 2 random monster vaults in the UD (remember, I start out by SMC>UD>HMV>Village elder quest), all at experiance levels lower then 13, and met one doppelganger king in each vault - I couldn't hit them (To-hit was 28, DV was ~55), they couldn't hit me. And I had a lot of fun: I miss, they miss, I go berserk, hit them, they hit me, I hit them, they hit me, I hit them, they die, I'm almost out of HP, but victorious :D
The reason why they are feared is that by the time you meet them, you have lots of To-Hit, and quite a lot of damage, while they have an annoying tendency to get critical hits. And a critical hit from an "enhanced" you is counted in the hundreds.

BTW - only trolls can eat Doppelganger Kings, but their corpses work almost like potions of Gain Attributes :) (there is a chance of +1 to all atributes, depending on the B/U/C status)

Cathan Twice-Born (is that from earthdawn?)

You are doing fine.

I've been playing for about a year and a half (2-4 hours a week) and never won.

This game is frustrating, maddening, unforgiving and unmerciful...I love it!

My only advice is to thumb through these forums, and ask questions. My characters have become more powerful, increased in longevity, and
more fun since I've been reading these forums...These people know what they are talking about and have some great tips that are left out of the guidebook.

Good luck and have fun!!

to answer your question: either we all suck or we all don't suck :P

maelstrom, what message do you get when you eat a doppleganger king corpse?

Taz: A potion of gain attributes (4s) is lying here. Suddenly a stone block hits your head! Something on the ground is smashed to pieces!
PeanutGod: Awwww no! How harsh is that! This is where you need the artefact 'mop and bucket'.

The only thing I can add to MadTom is that you need to be strict. The first door you don't search for traps will blow up, destroying your best stuff. Just accept that this game is trying to kill you. Its not entertainment. You can't play it like you'd play final fantasy. If you start charging down corridors with low health, you WILL die. If you don't make sure you have the very best kit your money can buy, you WILL die. If you don't take control of your characters progression, their talents, their training 'regime', their items, their health and their strategy, you WILL MOST CERTAINLY DIE.

Oh, and don't fight more than one opponent at a time unless you have no choice. Start thinking several moves ahead, instead of just one.

That is very good advice, Larrack :) Exactly what I would say. That and, of course: ADOM is turn-based. If you're down to low HP and fighting a balor, the LAST thing you should do is speed up!! Unlike in real-time games, that balor will wait for you as long as you like. Stop everything. Look at your inventory. Think before you act. The vast majority of situations in ADOM have solutions; whether or not you think of them (and anticipate and prevent solution-less problems such as gorgon breath) is up to you.

When I give advice, it is always good. Must admit though, I rarely play Adom any longer - mostly for those reasons :) High level play is like a chess game with a psychopath.
