which one of you freaks is andy williams? i was just looking at his site. he has about 20 pages of stats adn information on amulets of order, can you believe that? he did stats for every birth month, b/c/u status.... everything you would never imagine. i can't imagine how much time he spent on this. the guy would be a millionaire if he would do that kind of research for someone who would pay him for it. andy, whoever you are...please, take a vacation.

I've understood that he has only compiled research done by many people into one guidebook. Might be wrong though, but it would seem reasonable.

Lets thank Andy for making the guidebook, because it has been a great help at least for me.

It's not just Andy doing the work, you dumbass. It's him and most everybody on the rec.games.rougelike.adom group over the past... what?, 7 years? He has just compiled it all together, that's all.

Don't judge him.. I know people who spend more time than that watching Tv, and this at least involves thinking.

Besides which, Jonesy is right. Andys pages aren't about "Hey, look what a geek I am!", they're a collection of things many, many people have discovered about Adom. Most of the REALLY geeky things in there were contributed.

Let's not discount the possibility that Andy is, in fact, very geeky. I don't know the guy, but I imagine it can't be ruled out.

Anyway, I use the guidebook constantly, and appreciate his collecting and organizing the information and making it available. It's helped me a ton, although I still suck at ADOM.

Anyone who plays roguelikes is a total geek.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

I've undertaken a laborious endeavour to seek out my inner geek and give him a warm hug of acceptance.

Yep. A "Q" in the wrong place can really ruin your day playing ADOM. :)

Genius? No, but I'd say more intelligent or science/math oriented people are more likely to seek out roguelikes than other types of people. For example, I'm a physics major...

I failed chemistry three times in high school and never got to physics. Similiarly, I took four years of Spanish... Spanish I, Spanish II, Spanish II and Spanish II.

However, I do prefer los roguesimilares.

School's got very little to do with actual intelligence. I know several people who are very smart; they just don't happen to be good at school... one has ADD; she gets C's and D's but writes beautifully... another is a very good musician; he can write songs and play three instruments, but is three years behind in school... a computer genius who ignores all subjects but math and science... then there's the girl who knows eight languages but dropped out of college with a GPA below 1...

On the other hand, though, many people expect you to have a college degree to prove you're smart... but IMO, many people graduate from college without having a single original thought in their lifetimes; while people like the above examples are ignored because they aren't "conventionally" smart. Go figure.

While Andy does compile information from a newsgroup to make the Guidebook, the only way in which he advertises this (other than the occasional credit given to whoever found out something) is in the intro section of the book, which I can't imagine very many people see. This is, as is demonstrated by nabo's post, misleading.

He's getting much more credit than he deserves for his dubious practices.

I don't think it's that dubious. To anyone who frequents RGRA, the Guidebook as a compilation of knowledge rather than a single work, is quite obvious.

Even if you could prove that the majority of ADOM players use the newsgroup, which is arbitrarily unlikely, it would not justify his practices if they are indeed of questionable character.

Of course, I only state my opinion, not something I claim to be truth.

I find this thread quite interesting because I love math and I am a total computer nerd. I consider myself fairly intelligent, however I hate school and choose to go to it 1 day a week on a bad week, maybe 2-3 on a good one.
