I hate it when the kill list indicates in no uncertain terms EXACTLY what went wrong with the game. For example, my latest character, a female human paladin:

The following monsters were vanquished:
1 bandit
1 big dog
1 floating eye
2 giant frogs
1 giant rat
1 goblin
1 goblin rockthrower
4 kobolds
2 large bats
5 orcs
1 rat
1 ratling archer
1 ratling thief
95 white worms

Got paralyzed by that Eye and something killed you, or those worms were too much?

Worms, of course.. If 95 had been killed, a lot more would have been generated.

If Kryllion was playing the bug-ridden, unplayable 1.1.x crap those worms probably WERE very tough...

For a low level (judging from his kill list - very low level, propably below 6 when meeting the wave of worms), those worms are tough, and replicate a lot faster, then a paladin can kill them - he was overwhelmed by weak monsters.

Spiders? You die of poison of overwhelmed by tarantulas?
The reason I'm asking is that I've almost never been overrun by spiders, always find some spider corpse and gain posion resistance, and those elves simply don't summon enough spiders to overrun me (if they don't get lucky and summon tarantulas only, they can be hard sometimes).

No, not poison. That's not the problem, after you've killed about a hundred of them.

My characters have a thing with spiders and the Big Room...

Aye, know exactly what you mean. My last beastfighter became arachnofobic in the Big Room because of those darn dark elves and their spiders. A normal large spider had more health than an animated tree and stuff. Then you get surrounded, you miss and you see your whole LoS full of the buggers and the summoner on the edge, summoning more... I whacked them after a very long and boring fight, but I really started to hate the sight of a dark elf there...

Play a (lawful) druid. Be crowned. Allow a red worm to be generated in the ToEF. Can you say "fallen champion"?

What I hate is finding two bee hives in the early game. Halfway through the second hive they all become "very experienced" and the fight becomes like this:

"The giant bee warrior punches through you armor and hits you! You feel poisoned! The giant bee warrior suddenly drops dead! You climb up the stairs... You feel the poison pulsing (whatever, I don't remember the poison message) in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You do not manage to properly take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You do not manage to properly take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You do not manage to properly take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You take care of your wounds. You feel the poison pulsing in your veins! You do not manage to properly take care of your wounds.

etc.

Poison Resistance works wonders, Some Guy. Of course, that just means you'll be killed by the bee's melee attack instead.

I know about poison resistance, and I know it's great. I just don't always manage to get spider corpses.

I nearly got killed by my first stone ooze, I thought "Hey its just a ooze with paralyzing attack, I've taken on dorn beast and tons of paralzying beast without -paral, lets go berserk on it."

Of course I didn't know they do 70 damage, it managed to paralyze me and whack over 200 points of damage before I can move again. If I'm a magic user I'll be dead.

Wow. Here's a white worm story for you all:

My name's Orok, orcish weaponsmith, I'm doing pretty well for a level 8 guy, got blanket, killed kranach, got healing from Jharod, exploring the rest of the ID. Suddenly, on VD:3, I sense a pious aura! Hello, I think, precrowning time. Seeking out yon altar, it turns out to be white. Not a problem, I says, I was rethinking the whole life of crime thing anyhow. So I change alignment, lure a few dozen of my less enlightened fellows to the altar and sacrifice up to the 'spiritually invincible' level. Walking around in search of offerings, I espie a humble white worm, minding its business and doing the whole worm thing. I prepare to make heavy with the splattering until I realise that it's not hostile. Being a newly lawful chap I don't want to anger anyone by killing an innocent so I leave it be and carry on sacrifing goblins and the like. Five minutes later, the supply of generated enemies has mysteriously run dry. Somewhat worried I wander back to the worm and, surprise surprise, there's now A LOT OF WORMS, and every single one of them seems to be a damn pacifist. This leaves me in something of a poser - the worms are stopping any sacrifice fodder from being generated, but I can't kill any of them. Now believe me, I tried EVERYTHING, but I just couldn't get them hostile. I would have insulted their mother but by this stage damn if I could find which one it was.
SO, long story short, I didn't get precrowned, I just took out my frustration on those damn worms, went to C- and promptly got ripped to shreds by a trio of greater daemons two minutes later when I prayed.

Reading a cursed scroll of monster aggravation would have done the trick.
