I started the game with a ring of Djinn summononing.

I was wondering what would be the best thing for a first level human wizard to wish for? (I'm going to make sure it's blessed first).

Any thoughts?

Also, would an actual Djinn be useful?

Not as useful as a wish.

I would keep it until it's time to save Khelly.
And if you find an amulet of life saving before that..
Well, girdle of giant strength is nice for a wiz!

Or 7LBs. Makes survival easier from the beginning, since low level mages sometimes have to run away after spending their spell points.
On the other hand, eternium plates usually last the whole game and the tremendeous PV boost they give would make the first levels easy.
Some like certain spells. Acid Ball comes to mind. Very useful for more dangerous monsters, since about nothing resists or is immune to acid (although your mage would not be able to read the book yet, too high level spell, but after a few levels...).

(pairs of*) Seven league boots would be awesome, they are IMO the best single item in the game. While blessed they double your walking speed, giving you the ability to flee from nearly all monsters and line them up better for bolt spells.

Then again you could end up not getting another wish or an AoLS before Khelly and you'd be kicking yourself for wishing for something else.

It's a tough call really. Just whatever you do, don't use it uncursed for a djinni. It'd just kill everything for you in the early game and you wouldn't get any exp.

ps. really, wish for "pairs of seven league boots", you'll get more than one.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

If you go for 7LBs, form the wish to "seven leagues", this gives multiple pairs.

I'd do the following: keep it safe until dwarf town and see what the mystician gives, if he gives the SoCR, then I'd go for a GoGS or slb's... if not, then for AoLS

I don't consistently make it very far in the game (furthest I've gotten is water temple), so I think I'll either go for girdle of giant strength or Seven League bootss.

While the boots are better, they are also more common.

Yup, as common as a wish, I'd say. I've never found a pair, always wished for them.

I'd go for red dragon or black dragon scale mails. They give so much PV that most early game monsters can't harm you, and also protect from fire/acid traps. Seven league boots are useless if you get caught between two monsters in a tunnel.

That PV would also help to gain weapon skill levels (more DV) as you don't have to kill everything by spells or run away... But that's just me, I try to use meleé as much as possible even with spellcasters (maybe that's why I'm not very successfull with them :)

If I'd want PV, I'd go for eternium plates. With luck, you get something with a nice prefix/suffix.

And for mages meleing, yeah, I try to train my skills with weapons too. I save the spells for harder mosters, and deal with the weak ones with weapons (usually spears).

Okay, so I wished for Red Dragon Plate Mail, and oh man has it been helpful. I got to train my polearms to level 8 so far, and my shild skill is level 3. 1 Wish gave me 3 pieces of armour. 2 +13 PV, and 1 +11.

Here's the problem. I 2 of the pieces so that I could have a tonne of money. But a bit after dwarf down I ran into some goblin berzerkers that damaged my armour. My armour got damaged -twice- and now it's only +4.

So. Should I go back to Lawinthino and the 2 pieces of dragon mail that are much much stronger than what I have? Or will that cause my problems later on in the game?

I've learned teleport and I have teleport control.

(On a side note, my character is doing great. Almost all stats are at 20 now, I'm permanently invisible, which is a problem because my next quest is the arena, I got a second wish [AoLS] and I'm generally kicking ass). And I just finished the Pyramid without much trouble.

So will stealing from the troll in Lawinthino hurt me down the road too much?

AoLS wouldn't help you, he'd just paralyze and kill you twice. I know how you feel, though, the only time I ever got the rune covered trident at level 16 I lost it against a mimic of some kind in the DH almost immediately after. I decided I'd pick up a potion in the first room I entered... nope, not a potion.

i hate it when that happens. you get something new and good and you think you're invincible and of course adom just has to prove you wrong. btw, if you don't have a blessed ring of ice i wouldn't wish for 7lb or GoGS. if you don't believe me just ask that fireball trap you're about to walk on.

You know, you guys are gonna laugh. I was starting a dark elf ranger (Drizzt comes to mind) and I went in to the SMC to grab the two scrolls out of habit. I saw a spellbook next to a hallway, walked over and got it. Here comes the hilarious part. I never read the guidebook so when I found a pair of worn boots just in my LOS in the hall, I never knew they were 7LB. Damn I kicked myself later! I sold them to Barnabus for godsakes! Dammit! lol

You did buy the boots back right?

Selling them is a heck of a lot better than say dropping them off in the wilderness.

*hijacks the thread* Giant frog first kill? Why, for god's sake?! :-)

Btw, imho the ideal first kill for any character - ultra or non-ultra - is assassin. Rarely encountered in dungeons, but readily available at assassin's guild and on the road near it. Easy Courage and not too bad Filk quest (you gotta reach Malakai anyway, and assassin kills are most often way below 67). Only a couple of problems - they are not *always* initially generated in Lawenilowhocares, but the chances seem to be around 90%, and they can be quite a PITA to kill for a non-spellcaster lvl 1 char.

Giant Frogs are pretty good actually... they're relatively rare so Filk won't be very deep; and they're available in wilderness encounters when you want to complete the courage quest.

uhhh, champions of order or balance dont need to get the sceptre to finish the game..the trident replaces it, so an assassin first kill isnt a good idea.

Muggers , outlaw leaders are pretty good, beggars also. (they repopulate every once in a while in the outlaw town if youre going to courage also).

firestorm, yeah, right. Somehow I always forget about that law/balance thingie. :-)

Oh, don't tell me about muggers! I still can't forget how one of my lawfuls tried a mugger first kill. Non-hostile Laweniloetc, with only a couple of muggers, and not exactly steady repopulation rate... urgh... fell from grace, lured about half a million beggars into the wilderness (they plagued me with their requests for escort till my untimely demise), still couldn't get enough kills when some giant boar killed me. NEVER AGAIN!
