I've begun playing this Gnomish Wizard recently, he's still low-level (below ten :-p) but he's doing very well so far in terms of spells acquired and such. Out of curiosity, what does one wish for with a spell-caster? 7LB? Phase daggers to train for that eventual needle/sting combination (although I prefer using a shield than dual-wielding 90% of the time)? This problem of wishing with wizards has always been an impediment, usually I'd go for 7LB or GoGS but now I'm not so sure.

I always use my first wish on aols for kelly. but, besides that I'd say seven league boots. more useful than gogs for a wizard.

Bha perished at level 11 to a lesser daemon..too bad; I'd killed off all the pools I could find and had acquired teleportitis, teleport control, and intrinsic invisibility.

Acid ball is nice to have as a wizzie, but 7lbs rock. Also, if low levels, a nice suit of armor, say dragon scales or eternium plate is not a bad choice.

Yes you will. You wish for a spellbook, you get one, you wish for spellbooks, you get 2-5 spellbooks of a given type.

Magic missle is a good choince too. Can you wish for ego-items yet? Like the staff of the arch-magi or something. Or empowered red dragonsclae mail of protection.

No, you can't wish for empowered *foo* protection. You might get something like that by wishing red dragon scales.

I'd never wish for spellbooks, i think (well, perhaps for wish one dayt, but i don't think so).
Just keep walking in the ID until you find it.
I wanted my last character (who died stupidly, so i might have to tell his tale in the stupidest dead topic) to have SoA before going to the Caverns of chaos so i kept walking through the ID, what i usually do. He ended up with Acid Ball, Ice Ball, Improved Fire ball, Death ray and a load of other good books. Plus i was level 13-14 when i entered the caverns of chaos, and rid all my food problems thanks to SoA. It did take me some 14 game days, but i thought it was worth the wait.

I can think of one fairly possible reason: You've used Magic Missile almost exclusively; now that you're level 20-ish it's the only spell trained up to useful levels. You've let yourself run out of casts and your spellbook has been destroyed... stupid you, should've got blankets... leaving you without your main weapon.

If time is enough of a matter (a crowned chaotic almost past the 90-day limit) or scumming for spellbooks is difficult (being in an area where it would be hard to scum for spellbooks--say, trapped in the Gremlin Cave, the ToEF, or a dangerous area like Darkforge or Dwarven Halls, where you'd be too weak to survive without your main spell-weapon), wishing for spellbooks of magic missile might actually be a viable strategy.

It also illustrates that a spellcaster must never rely on or train only a single spell!
