Am currently playing a lvl 18 human wizard, runing around with a dagger of devastation, and was thinking, if i plan to get the ToRR, what should i be using to get the weapon skills up for that class of weapon? Are spears still part of that class (can't remember and stuck at work so i can't test it)

Got my first pet shop in this game (1.1.1 - never had one before - and in all my games, i've never found a figurine)

Polearms, and yes they are. Unless I'm mistaken. (Tridents are polearms, right?)

Scythes are polearms too. So basically any stick with something sharp on the end is a polearm.

a trident is a long stick with 3 prongs, <commonly used for frog hunting now>
so its a polearm, some guy got it any long sharp thing counts for the weapon marks.

BTW has anyone ever thought about how you could throw a scythe effectively
IMO they aren't the most optimal throwing items ;)

Scythes can be thrown just like an axe, It's quite easy really, you just need to "feel" the way it turns in the air; it's pretty much like throwing a two-handed axe (the one you chop trees with), just that the best way to throw it is on a flat trajectory (horizontally), not from behind your back, like with the axe.

one thing that would make it a bit hard is the fact that the blade is abou 10 times longer that on a two-handed axe
I haven't tried it tough

It actually makes things better - if you throw it horizontaly, the long, curved blade will slice the air really well.

P.S. Wow, a talk about the techniques of throwing scythes in real life... ADOM must really scorch our brains ;)

Hmph. I'd rather have a scorched brain than a useless Valley-girl "Oooh, look at those cuuuute jeans!" brain.

I wonder if it's possible for you to double-wield whips in real life? I can use one pretty well... but two? Hmm, shall have to try it.

Double-wielding whips in ADOM is as easy, as it is in real life - that is, basic attack costs 2500 points, and you get large negative to-hit "bonuses" :P
Hitting with 2 whips takes more time then hitting 2 times with one whip, and that's a fact :D

Nuuh. Theres such thing as steeltipped whips, if you could get that swinging fast enough that could do some serious damage. Very unpredictable though :P

I think steel-tipped whips fall under "scourages" rather then whips...

There should be a "thrown corpse of a puppy" weapon skill, as well as a melee-puppy. I'd use one.
thrown whips... there should be a thrown-skill for all misc. items like anvils, seeds and stuff.
(NOT)
and my point was...

How do you think whips are used for combat in Adom, anyway? Would they be used to just slowly slash monsters until they bleed to death? Or would you grab hold of monster limbs with them and pull them down... or wrap the whip around the neck of the monster and choke it... or what? I guess that whips of slaughtering/the snake would just pack quite a magical punch and it wouldn't have to do much with technique.

Have you ever been hit by a whip? I accidentally hit myself in the leg with a ~5-meter whip. that hurt like hell, and it was an accident. the skin was all red, like after a good spankin' ;)
and besides, the whip damage is like 1d3 oslt. even in real life, if a huge weightlifter hits you with, say, a spoon, it'll damn well hurt.
and my point was...

Hey, Some Guy: they are best used as a tool, as self-flagellation (ie hitting yourself as an act of piety). I believe it increases your piety level, but i don't know how much. Anyone?

It pushes alignment towards L.
it's in the guidebook.
Besides you'll have to whip yourself silly before you have a significant increase on alignment.
is this an easy way around the difficulty of high-level conversion?

I think I'm correct in saying that the alignment change is proportional to how much damage you take. So, if you take off all your armour and put on a bunch of leather caps +0,-2 etc., and use a whip of slaughtering or something, you ought to get a bigger boost. just be careful you don't whip yourself to death!

True, you need to hurt yourself to feel anything, and the more damage you do the more effect it will have.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Yes, that's whipping yourself silly. being hit by a whip of slauthering should feel about the same as being hit with three quarterstaves at the same time in the same place.
anyway, usually by the time you've found a whip of slauthering you'll have enough hp to take it.
And my point was...
