I've started about 5 dwarven weaponsmiths today. Dead, every one of them. How do you people keep those buggers alive in the beginning?! They can't even live through a bloody ghoul!
At least my drakeling healer is going well (that's just about a trollish healer, just without the food problems), and the orcish barbarian is just as any of them - strong, tough, agile, idiotic, ugly. And unstoppable >:D

drop the anvil and ingots in a safe place at the beginning (the small cave) and remove one of the hammers and get a better weapon as soon as possible

I don't think dwarves are actually the best race for weaponsmiths. Sure, they get natural mining and smithing, but then they aren't getting other skills, and you start with only a few. Gnomes at least have gemology, so gnomes are a good choice.

It's also my friend's birthday today. I'd wish him a happy birthday but I only see him at school. He plays Adom too... not nearly as well as me though :)

Month? Usually Book, Dragon or Raven.
Drop the anvil you say? Why? I always get at least 1 forge od UD:1-3. Removing one of the hammers is a no brainer, I always get a shield in SMC to fill the left hand. The main problem is, that those guys have really low DV/PV values early on, like 11/4, so the first paralyzing monster in a corridor is usually the last my weaponsmiths see.

Ive never had a successfull Weaponsmith. But then again ive never had a successfull ranger, monk, necromancer, or merchant either. I suppose if you found a relatively good spear/shield and a forge early your set. Of course youd need a pickaxe too...Can you fix that once it breaks by yourself at a forge?

damn, forgot to generate any characters yesterday. oh well.
gnomish weaponsmiths are a good choice, because of the gems you'll find when mining. they're a bit more fragile than average, but they do start with a shield to compensate.

Maelstrom, the anvil is very heavy, just go and get if you need it but don't carry it with you all the time, atleast not in the beginning

All weaponsmiths(even hurthlings) start with a strength of at least 17-19, that is they are strong enough to carry all the stuff they start with(including the anvil) without being burdened. Being burdened/strained isn't very effective anymore when your strength is at those numbers.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

i just won with a trollish weaponsmith.
found a forge on UD:7 or something and forged away on iron items, the lvl 6 ability to melt items to ingots is really good. i had dv/pv over 30 at clvl 9 with berserk tactics.

I just thought of another trick with gnomish weaponsmiths. Since they're guaranteed to start with 18 or so strength, check the guide book for what effects the opening questions have, and use answers that lower strength and raise other stats. That's what I did when I was playing gnomish weaponsmiths, and it's very easy that way to get VERY good starting stats.
