I always try to get an outlaw as first kill if I'm playing something strong or start with a bolt spell. If I'm feeling my character started a bit weak I go for a bandit. If you want the filk quest, never choose an assassin! on the other hand if you just want courage it's not a bad choice as you can easily get 20 of them in the assassins' guild.

large dogs are a good choice if you want both quests - you can find them easily enough in the wilderness and they are quite rare in dungeons - checking some level 50 flgs i see about 15 killed.

Or you could find assassins on the wilderness roads.

searching for them in swamps you're also liable to find undead parties, which will kick your ass at level 1 (besides being bad first kills)

I enjoy skeletons or zombies really as courage only kills. By the time you have 500 kills you should be able to do the dwarven graveyard, and plenty of those nasties around

I'll go with TheTimpen on that one, a big fan of Giant Frogs personally.

If you meet a undead party and are unable to run away, die and create a new char. It's only lvl 1 :p

How about gremlins? Not very common normally, but you sure know where to find 20 of them if need be :P

yeah, but that puts you out of being able to get the phial of caladriel, or from gremlin-scumming if you need an AOLS etc.

IMHO a mugger is the best first kill - if one is randomly generated in Lawenilothehl. They are hardly ever generated elsewhere in the game but can be easily triggered by robbing a shop - thus, making it very easy to kill Filk and get courage thereafter.

Doesn't robbing shops generate thugs? besides, I like to get the courage skill as early on as possible, at which point robbing a shop is not a good idea.

Yes, it generates thugs; and that's the only way to generate them.

Outlaw is a good first kill, if you get Courage before level 15; because they hang around in the hills and you can kill enough for Courage in three encounters or so.

assasins are the best by FAR, you kill 1, good
when you need courage you need 30+those rare ones whacked in dungeons, making the Filk dive reasonable. <dont see a lot of ultras w/ "rats" as a first kill> you chose when to get courage, <when you NEED IT> and about then the unicorne thing is there, so it makes sense to control your kill to make all the mid game options easier, besides by the time it matters you have skills at 100, Courage is the latest and NEEDED...imho

no, assassins are NOT a good first kill for the filk quest. why? because to receive that quest, you have to fight your way through THE ASSASSINS' GUILD, which, oddly enough, is FULL OF ASSASSINS.

So? You need to kill 20 anyway to get courage, so might as well go down there and kill them. One room that's in VDDL that is full of them doesn't need to be emptied, and there's even a few master assassins in there. You won't find Filk in ID:21, but you don't usually kill any ridiculous numbers of assassins during a game I think.

i think my last ultra winner killed over 100 assassins, although that may not have been necessary. it just seems like a bad idea to me anyway.

My favourite first kill is the old barbarian (if i can pull it off... its an instant 10 lev gain for a new char, althourg it stops you from getting courage)

Otherwise I try to get an assassin as a first kill

Another good thing about having an outlaw as a first kill is that just north of the old barbarian is a road. This road is usually packed with outlaw bands just waiting to ambush your sorry character. This way you can get the courage skill almost directly after your visit to the barbarian, without spending much game-time (roads are quick!), and still have no problem finishing the Filk-quest.

The road is dangerous though. If you get stuck in the middle of a gnoll warband or chaos monk pilgrimage with a weak char, make sure you have an invisibility potion to sneak your way back out again with.

It's not impossible. It should be possible to get Andor Drakon as first kill too if one knows how to play bards ;)

How would you get past D:50, without killing anything. Maybe scrolls of familiar summonin could help, or maybe you could just teleport around the place until the gate is free.
