If you are not going for an ultra ending, the standard rule "i's better to have it then to be without it" can be applied to it rather shamelessly.

I was once attempting ulimate chaos god ending. Everything was fine. I had all required things and resistances. I was on level 50 just to wait to become extremely corrupted so I could enter the gate. Well, I got surrounded by balors but didn't care, just blessed some potions of extra healing, and.... A bloody balor hit me critically THREE times. I had over 400 hp and I still died. I DIDN'T have the courage skill, and I couldn't help wondering that if I had had it, I wouldn't have died. So it i IS worth getting. Better to get every little thing that helps you than die in agony ;)

Over 400 hp isn't safe. I had a GM take away 690 in one hit (luckly I survived that with 3 hps left, barbarian style ;) )

Anyway - courage is worth acquiring, especialy in 1.1.1, with the uber-jackal herds an'all...
A pessimist sees a dark tunnel.
An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.
