I've had enormous luck with mana 3, including "a heap of two worn boots [60s]" from an orc tension room

Maybe we have misunderstood the whole thing.. The lower the mana score, the more luck you have, and not the other way around. ;-)

w/pickpocket @ 100 and a good DV you can milk the gremlins in the cave wear your luck stuff and enjoy your spoils, artifacts come every so often, that is the key to getting the 'all artifact in the game' challenge (minus the mutually exclusive ones of course)

Prehaps the giant thought he could do more damage with his fists rather than a spear that he has absolutely no proficiency in.

"you can't pickpocket anything that weighs more than about 2s."

A bit more actually. I've pickpocketed some blankets, and they weight 10s, so it is a bit more than 2s. Don't know the exact limit, but you definitely can't pickpocket Wyrmlance or Purifier. BoW or Preserver could maybe be pickpocketed though.
The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt.
