Yes, well. Victory is mine! (Hurtling healer, failed ULE attempt) (Hopefully this doesn't display really badly here) "What's that?" You say. A code-diver who hasn't even won a game? 'Tis true! This is my first victory - only my second character that got past the ToEF (and that one was save-scummed). I could've won with that save-scummed character but I decided to quit before I did and try for a real win. I decided I wanted to play a candle-born healer of some sort, and a hurtling healer seemed to be the most fun/interesting choice. This combo starts out with some great skills (alertness, archery, backstabbing, concentration, find weakness, healing, herbalism, food preservation). It also starts with extremely low strength - I don't remember exactly what this one started with, but the range is about 3-7 (I think this one started with 4) - and good toughness (20ish). Fairly hard starting with such low strength... I decided to head straight through the small cave since I started with both healing and herbalism, and many attempts died right there. Kind of annoying since I really didn't want to play this combo without scumming for Candle birth sign first. My memory is fairly poor, so I don't remember exactly how the early game went (or the rest of it for that matter). A pool in the lower CoC gave a wish which gave 2 SLB, and I found an amulet of lifesaving somewhere along the line. I started by using a generic spear and shield but switched to maces when I found a mace of destruction and kept with maces for the rest of the game. As a hurtling, I used a lot of rock throwing early and that made some foes pretty easy. Alters were common enough to not be a problem. I was doing fairly well not killing any cats until one wandered into a dark room. Oops. A lot of times I don't even try; so much bother ;) Got the portal quest, didn't complete any other dwarf elder quests yet. I had a semi-rare creature, nothing too rare, I had to slay. I went back to do the village dungeon and puppy cave. Puppy cave had herbs. Sometime around here I went neutral to get pickpocketing and detect traps. I got it so late I had to do a lot of stealing at 1 skill to meet the requirement; actually wasn't as annoying as I thought it'd be. I'm still not used to trying for precrownings, but I decided at the last minute to try for one (only one since I had already spawned the si) when I was level 16. I started sacrificing live creatures like mad in the village dungeon and discovered that sacrificing creatures actually gives you a small amount of experience. I sacrificed until I couldn't risk any more (I had maybe 200exp until the pyramid was closed) and headed off to the pyramid. Gained a level, prayed -- nothing. Damn! No precrowning after all. Oh well. Pyramid was a cinch. Then I did the graveyard; nothing special. I went back and did the puppy cave vault, which I left until I had pickpocketing (was orcs IIRC). Somewhere I got teleport control from a blink dog corpse. There was a book shop on D:1 and a book room on D:5 to make reading easier. Either from the shop or a drop I got a book of teleportation and managed to learn a little bit. I headed over to darkforge and looted the rooms with book-read teleport: absolutely nothing good, what a shame. Went off and finished the other elder quests, as I had gotten the required kill somewhere along the way. Got across with a wand of cold, Skeletal King was easy enough. About here I decided to try the bug temple, figuring I could teleport away and leave if it was too difficult. Greater Claw Bugs fell in 1-3 arrow shots, but Killer Bugs were moderately scary. I started eating up a delicious feast of mostly GCBs. With a little help from strained and satiated, I got my speed up to a decent 160 or so, and my level was now about 24ish. I considered trying to abuse slow monster to get it even higher, but figured I was already going to be taking a big enough experience hit from getting that much speed too soon and I didn't need more. (Plus, I think I forgot the area was corrupting and ended up nabbing something nasty, I think the ancestors one. I had to go grab a cure - I had plenty from saving Kelly.) The KBs were still a bit scary so I didn't do the temple itself yet and headed back to my item stash in the Ogre Cave. Thought I should sacrifice a little bit to make sure I was still on good standing, and suddenly my equipment is destroyed! I sit around trying to figure out how my God has gotten so angry so quickly, when I finally realized I was still neutral (not lawful) ;/ Luckily I had backups for my most important items: I had the 2nd pair of SLB from the wish, an eternium flail that worked as a weapon (not quite as good as the mace of destruction, but good enough), and another decent shield (either crystal or addy, something like +9/+4 or similar). Lost my rings of slaying and regeneration as well as my big stack of about 200 normal arrows. Somewhere around here I did the High King's Tomb... it was pretty uneventful. I forget when I talked to the mystic... I decided to try for the chaos resistance as a neutral but failed the 50% check. I got a little more skill in my weapons (and shields), possibly a level or two, and decided I was ready to try the bug temple itself. I started by luring out the initial batch to the surface in groups of 2-4, then inside I started picking off killers 1 or 2 at a time at distance. Here I discovered a love for door creation; I simply threw up doors to block off all of the groups of bugs I didn't need to bother with, which saved a lot of time and ammo. Lured the bugs guarding the main room into the corridor and picked them all off and claimed my rewards. Now I decided to get my willpower back. Since the ToEF was next, I definitely needed enough willpower not to get confused and all. I headed back to the puppy cave to harvest up a mega load of herbs, probably walked back to the Ogre cave to sort out my stuff again, then headed to the ID for some training. I decided to hang around D:24 for the djinn chance, and started eating lots of morgia. I also decided to try some starvation training, at first only for willpower but later strength entered the equation with ogre tension room corpses and even dex with some moss (I had lost 2 dex from being strained, I got that back and a little more). I ended up with about 30 willpower, 40 dex, and maybe 28 strength (plus gauntlets of strength). No RoDS, but that wasn't my goal anyway. I also abused slow monster a bit combined with invisibility against various horde rooms to try and get some experience; I gained 2 or 3 levels in the time I was down there. Hit a surprising number of Dorn Beast threaten rooms; I left the levels instantly, even though I did have an amulet of free action. And then I decided it was finally time to try the tower. I had only once passed it, and that was with a save-scummed character. The tower had been so tough for some characters that even several save-scummed characters were given up on here. I had the crown of leadership that I got from some random drop, higher metal weapon and shield, invisibility, and rocks as missile weapons if I needed them. I threw on some addy boots and an addy girdle instead of my SLB and girdle of carrying. I did do the water temple before it mainly just so I had the orb to boost my willpower for confusion resistance. I had several rings of cold from the ID scumming, but I didn't use them. I think I went with clear mind and fire resistance instead. I had intrinsic resistance, elemental gauntlets, and 1 ring of fire resistance but I still wasn't immune to the fire... I ignored this completely because of my uber candle-born healer regeneration. Fireproof blankets were in plentiful supply. I carefully made my way down to ToEF4, and took a few zaps with a wand of digging in the middle to try and reach the vile wyrm as directly as possible. I slowly approached, thinking I could probably turn around and get the hell out of I needed to. I was invisible, so the Wyrm was just sitting there surrounded by mobs that didn't see me. I poked one and ran back into the corridor. When the wyrm got in line, I started zapping away with my wands of cold, probably about 6 shots in all, until all the mobs in front of the Wyrm were dead. I then equipped a small handful of blessed rocks and tossed away. 2 or 3 rocks later, the Wyrm... fell. Shocked and amazed at how easy that was, I quickly snatched the corpse and orb and left the tower. I went over to Terinyo to trade in for my potion of cure corruption. I now started feeling like this character had a real chance at victory. I was a little worried about the mana temple and D:50 though, since I had never beaten them (I quit playing that save-scummed archer before I did). I quickly made my way down to the casino and started gambling away. I piled everything up and identified it all and found protector lying amongst the junk. Yum! A shield-lover's dream! I bought some other useful stuff, various potions and scrolls... and I bought everything cheap so that more would restock. I think I restocked the gift shop about 4 times and bought everything interesting, mostly spare equipment in case I lost my stuff. I made the level right below the casino my new item stockpile, and transfered everything from the ogre cave over. I had gotten a blue metal cap from the casino as well, so I checked out the water dragon's lair to see what was there. Shining silver bracers... delicious. I opted to come back for it a bit later. I dove all the way down through the CoC down to D:48, and through the UL as well. Not one vault in the entire area, much less a greater one! I'm starting to doubt these greater vaults even exists ;D I was so low level at the time I gained 3-4 levels just by diving down and back up. I slayed the cat lord, mostly with regular missiles and webs but some melee as well. He was really fast even with my speed and SLB, but I could still outrun him. I'm pretty sure I had the stiff muscles corruption at the time, so that's probably why it was close. For regular monsters though, it wasn't a big deal, so I barely even noticed. I was watching his life with a stethoscope, and ended up bringing him down to 1hp. Slow Monster time. Mmmm... exp... :) Sometime around here I decided to start working on gathering the ultra artifacts. I really had no idea what my first kill was, but I think it was something moderately rare like an outlaw from Holeinthewall. I haven't really cared about this much in the past because I wasn't expecting to win at all, much less go for an ultra. Some games I went down and killed something like that, but in others I forgot to and just ended up killing a goblin or something. I don't know which it was this time for sure. Anyway, I got the phial and sacrificed my goodies to the d.ratling, but left off the quest for the skull since I still had some time left before day 90. I went back down (or maybe I even got this on the way back up, I forget what happened when) to take on the earth temple. I put on a blessed amulet of protection from constructs against the stone grues and earth elementals, and I think it did actually help quite a bit. I still need to investigate the full effects of those buggers in the code. Ancient Stone Beast was pretty slow and pretty wimpy... slow monster time again. Somewhere on the first dive down to the deep CoC, I had found a wand of wishing - the first one I'd ever seen - with 2 charges. I didn't need anything at the moment, so I just stashed it away. Back on the surface, I figure it's time to rob the water dragon. I tell Blup the good news, and then I throw up some darkness and start looting away. I had attacked her some when I moved into her by accident. Originally I planned to just ignore her and get the treasure, but it was getting really annoying going through the whole message deal every time I picked something up, as was the darkness. I started trying to hit her after she moved next to me, but she was no where to be found... I figure she's probably scared. I turn on the lights, pick something up, and she's already 3 spaces away running. I made her less scared with a quick missile shot; she breathed at me once, but it didn't even hit me. Started hitting her in darkness some more; cast slow monster, and she had run. Repeat, slow monster again: that's a lotta exp. I gained about 13 levels from the stone beast, water dragon, and cat lord alone. And here I was worrying my speed might be a big problem! I was about level 42 now. I had decided ahead of time to bring a fluff ball to try out this whole gremlin bomb thing, just for the hell of it really since I had wishes if I needed them - which I really didn't. Stealing was getting a little bit tedious, so I made a quick ADOMBot script to steal repeatedly... I checked my loot ever so often and ate. accidentally killed a few, but not many. I've decided that this is abusable enough that it should be listed on our bug/balance problem list. This is exactly the kind of power-scumming that the uber-monster effect was put into place to curb. In only about 5 game days of pilfering (I had just passed the 90 day limit, so I didn't care), I procured the following: 4 Potions of Cure Corruption 4 Potions of Gain Attributes 3? Daggers of Death The Shining Long Spear, Soaker 2 or 3 Scrolls of Chaos Resistance Crap loads of water (maybe 70 potions) an amulet of lifesaving Numerous other stat increase potions 200k in gold 2 rings of weakness a scroll of danger, which I read shortly after receiving, and eventually got 1 Wand of Wishing with 4 charges Misc. Other useful stuff; - keys, blankets, potions, scrolls, gems, etc. And I wasn't expecting to get this one: Grand mastery in Shields! Yeah. I know I was helped by a script (avoid abusing my wrists TOO much), but that's still a ton of goodies in a short time with no consequence. I have yet to think of a good solution though; everything I've come up with is either took weak or too severe. Anyway... I proceeded to finish off the old crone's quests and got the amulet, which I dropped (along with my new WoWi) in D:1 before I headed over to the stone circle. Mr. multi-headed fell easily, Forget if I even bothered to use dragon slayers or not. The one farmer in the HMV did not leave a corpse, so I went over to Terinyo. Farmers don't go to the outside border of the village so you can't lure them away... so I decided to shoot past one (I think I was using the rune-covered trident at the time) hoping that wouldn't piss everyone off. I was wrong. At least he left a corpse. I tried casting calm monster on Mr. Kelly several times, and all I got in return was a 200hp hit from some energy ray or such. I started thinking of the implications and realized there was no way to make the town calm again. BUT, I remembered looked at that piece in the code -- Kelly should still summon the trident even if he's ticked off! I headed back to my item storage via the shortcut. I equipped all my -PV equipment I had saved and whipped myself back to L+ fairly easily with a whip of slaughtering. I figured I should use the 10 odd pickaxes I had collected, so I wished for mining after drinking all my education potions and reading the scrolls to no avail. After mining out about 1/4 of a level, I decided I didn't feel like bothering. I went back up to my item cache. I had a few levels left before I was eligible to get the Filk quest, and I needed Needle anyway, so I started gearing up for the BDC. Here's where I drank all my stat potions, and read all my defense/protection scrolls. I was a beast... and I was REALLY bloated now ;) I also spent about 50 game days in the wilderness looking for ogre armies to train up my strength some with a ring of weakness. I only hit 2 ogre armies in that time, and gained maybe 5-8 strength. I also wished for a girdle of giant strength. I go to the BDC, talk to the AKW but decided not to accept just yet. I did something else for a few minutes, and decided I was ready enough and headed on down. There was an ant hill one one of the levels and a fire giant horde in another. By the time I killed the Blue Wyrm, I was already level 50. Killed a few more blue dragons, but didn't worry about it too much... headed back out and talked to the Karmic Wyrm to claim my reward. Uh, to claim my reward. My reward. Huh? ...oh, does the Blue Wyrm drop Needle instead? ...Hmm... No... Uhm... Crap. Apparently, I forgot to actually get the quest, and the AKW refused to reward me. D'oh! Oh well, I probably wouldn't of been able to find Filk anyway... :/ I would've killed the AKW if I wasn't already level 50, but I was so I didn't. I dove to the SIL anyway for the hell of it, saw a Ki-rin on the way. Malaki actually hit me, I was surprised ;) I readied all my stuff, and set out for the areas I've never passed. I went on down to the mana temple, and took the long way around with a wand of digging - I went around top instead of the bottom, oops. Zapped a few fireballs as I was working my way around to try and take out some of the PP sapping magebane punks. The right half of the level was cast in darkness by the time I get there, and the archmage was zapping me from within it. He cast darkness every time I cast light, so I finally threw on an amulet of light. Slayed him very quickly with humanoid slaying ammo, and headed out without killing very many chaos servants at all. I'm trying to remember exactly why now, but I headed back up to the shortcut again. Maybe I did the mana temple at the same time I did the BDC... man my memory sucks sometimes. THIS HAPPENED TODAY, and I still can't remember. Geez. Anyway, I get ready again and head down to where I've never even been (D 49/50). I start heading some and somewhere along the way I was browsing my inventory and notice a shocking absence of the mana orb. D'oh again! Where did I put that? Did I leave it in the mana temple? Crap! I go BACK to the mana temple, and (greater) chaos servants are already filling out the trap-filled corridor. I start working my way through them, very slowly, with calm monster. I make my way into the main room, and finally kill/calm enough servants to see the area where I had killed the archmage. WHAT? There's no Orb laying there, either. I get rather surrounded by servants, and slowly continue to calm them until I finally kill all the wizards and eyes. When I ran out of pp, I cast darkness and waited for it to come back. I went through maybe 4 corruptions this way; I forgot I was still carrying around that worthless obsidian equipment, D'oh again again! I eventually think to summon a companion, and I lose a WMoPC, but my fire elemental starts killing pretty well. After almost all of the servants had killed themselves/been killed by my pet, I finally find the orb... one of them had picked it up. I thought they couldn't pick orbs up ;/ I had plenty of corruption cures (especially from the bomb) so I wasn't having problems there. I drop the orbs into their slots, And Brr! This level is cold. I sneeze. Dig straight up, and quickly make my way to the stairs. Do uselessness, suddenly realize 'Hey, I guess I could go ahead and crown myself now...' so I pray and get crowned as well, with the artifact cloak of defense. First time I've ever had an artifact cloak. Drop all my sis and crap so I'm unburdened. Check the guidebook briefly since I've never even been down here... read magic map and zap monster detection. Ok, so I'll just dig to the levers like the guidebook says I can... ...Except the entire left side of the level is completely undiggable. YAGBU :P I once again find myself loving doors, as I lock up the 2 rooms of mutants. WMoPC quickly fall to jelly slayers. Another door blocks off the main room. I go down one side toward a lever, and magic missile them to oblivion. This was a rather successful and easy way to kill them. flip the lever off. Go down the other hallway, do the same. Nothing even turn the other level back on! I could've just left the level without teleportation, even, and the gate would stay closed. For the hell of it though, I destroyed the levers, and killed Fisty, who was a pushover. The walls are so thick (super walls) that even ghosts cannot pass through them, btw. I walked back to the shortcut and back to the surface, and read all my remaining corruption cures. I couldn't even use the white unicorn because I made Terinyo hostile before I took the quest. I also had decided not the bother with the library since there was little reason to, especially with that book shop. Victory is finally mine =) You definitely don't need to scum excessively to win... mostly you have to avoid big mistakes early in the game I guess ;P (I made my big mistakes late, where they only eliminated my chances of ULE instead of killing me.) Congratulations! //while saving himself 44 times - it means that you saved your game 44 times ;) Damn, you took care of exp, of stat training... I usually don't care and just charge and whack (or freeze/roast/dissolve/death ray ;)) my enemies... :P How did you do that "gremlin bomb"? I thought it was pickpocket-kill-pickpocket-kill and so on, but you killed only 199... Do they drown in the cave by themselves or what? ;) |

Cheers mate! One advice: there is a way of luring a farmer from terinyo - You just have to use the :Switch position command ;) |

And another advice: no need to kill farmer by yourself. You can "O"rder this dirty work :-) |

or just take him near some hostile monsters... to SMC for example, or hang around until you have an encounter, or cast Summon Monsters :) |

"One advice: there is a way of luring a farmer from terinyo - You just have to use the :Switch position command ;)" I knew there was some way, just couldn't think of it. "And another advice: no need to kill farmer by yourself. You can "O"rder this dirty work :-)" Seems like that would still piss off the town. Once he's lured away it doesn't really matter how I kill him. I suppose I could've always wished for one too, I still had a spare wish even without the wand from the gremlin bomb which I didn't use. "How did you do that "gremlin bomb"? I thought it was pickpocket-kill-pickpocket-kill and so on, but you killed only 199... Do they drown in the cave by themselves or what? ;)" Yep. That's what sets it apart from just killing them in the gremlin cave. I killed maybe 40 the whole time I was in the WDL, and those were mostly by accident. Very overpowered scum method. "Damn, you took care of exp, of stat training... I usually don't care and just charge and whack (or freeze/roast/dissolve/death ray ;)) my enemies... :P" Exp came easily from killing the big beasties and my really low exp requirements, but I guess you mean casting slow. I was basically just being really cautious since I haven't won before this... I can now see that you really don't need to do much in the way of scumming at all to be successful. "//while saving himself 44 times - it means that you saved your game 44 times ;)" Ah, I see. Lots of times I loaded just to play briefly, sorted equipment or something, and resaved :P |

"...Except the entire left side of the level is completely undiggable. YAGBU :P" Sometimes you get a diggable D:50, sometimes you don't. I've been able to dig to the levers before, and I've also been attacked by ghost lords entering the lever rooms through the walls. "A strange note as well; a little after I got level 50 but before I got to D:50, at about 16.5 mill exp, I got a skill advancement pop-up! I checked the message log and it didn't say anything about leveling up, or anything else strange... this happened to anyone else?" I've got a few of those after reaching level 50 (when killing the last few of the greater molochs you get from a wish for "emperor moloch"). It was some time ago, but I think they didn't follow the exponential experience requirements of the real level increases - they seemed to occur randomly. I'm not sure what causes the extra skill increases, but I've got them too. Often after getting a big whack of xp, but sometimes I'm doing nothing. It's possible that it happens whenever you have enough skills ready to be trained again. For instance, I once got cooking for a scroll of education, and some time after getting level 50, I picked up a cooking set, and instantly got put into the skill advancement menu. I've tried eating quickling corpses while casting slow monster on myself, and my speed didn't go past 80 or 85. So that's one thing you can't take advantage of in this game. The following is a real Adom message: The homunculus hits you. You suddenly fall asleep! Do you want to continue to read the spellbook of Calm Monster? [y/N] |

As mopgoblin said, they might be random... but it almost definately doesn't do something as intricate as 'when you pick up a cooking set'. Eh? I highly doubt Speed works differently that everything else and thus Slow Monster should work fine. I can test it if you really want to, but I'm pretty sure; you should be able to raise it to 120 with no difficulty whatsoever, and 140 pretty easily. |

What is this 'gremlin bomb' trick? The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt. |

Ash: It's really overpowered, so I don't suggest anyone use it... Simply bring a fluff ball into the water dragon's lair and activate it (weild it, dropping it won't work). Gremlins will explode out; pickpocket nonstop. They drown, so you never have to kill any of them and they never become more powerful, but you can keep picking good stuff from thier pockets (some quite nice indeed, as you can see from my game) with the only factor being hunger and possibly other sea creatures that wander up. |

And they'll probably also drop some nice things when dying, so if you're lazy and don't want to play with bots, just stand and wait ;). BTW: How much will my aligment drop when I'll steal from the hoard/attack the water dragon? I don't think it would make my L+ 50 lvl champion to become a fallen one, but it's always better to ask ;). |

Killing her will be the major impact, not so much taking stuff or just attacking her. Not sure of any specific numbers for this, so no idea how much it'd affect you... I don't think it''ll total the 5000 stones you'd need to drop to neutral, but I'm not certain. Also if you didn't know, high level has no effect on NEGATIVE alignment changes, only positive. |

Just today my char was drop from NL to C- with 10000 stones on black side after killing her. So he wears AoO again and now rises only to 9000 black stones. |

Guinea: If you kill her while L+, it drops to L or may even stay at L+. Arch-mage: I've noticed that too. But if you kill her while L, the change seems to be considerably smaller. Btw, converting is a lot faster if you keep sacrificing something like 1$ on a white or gray altar. The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt. |

I tried a gremiln bomb yesterday in the WDL. I'm used to doing it in the dwarven graveyard and after this experience I'll go back to it. In the graveyard items are generated via pick pocketing and drops. Gremlins don't drop anything in the WDL when they die = no eternium plate mails and halberds and other nice stuff. |

What I've done in two games now is pick up the thing in her hoard I want, teleport to stairs, and go up, and never bother killing her. Even after doing this, you can still get the Rune covered trident if you talk to Blup. Okay then Twinge, test slow monster for yourself. |

About alignment: Changes depend on what your current alignment is quite a bit; if you're at the eextremes they generally change much slower (L+ and N= anyway, not sure about C-). I really need to get around to finishing collecting and analyzing all the alignment calculations since this is such a common topic ;) "And they'll probably also drop some nice things when dying, so if you're lazy and don't want to play with bots, just stand and wait ;)." As the unnamed fellow said, they don't drop anything in the WDL. However, if you do it elsewhere (where they can and will drop stuff in addition to the pickpocket) you'll most likely have to kill them, which means you can only do, say, 2000 before it starts getting dangerous. in the WDL, you can go indefinately, and that's why it's overpowered. "Okay then Twinge, test slow monster for yourself." I will shortly and edit this piece out with my results; my computer is going fubar but I want to finish a few things before I reboot. |
