whats the best way to train up my bow skill? just shooting and killing alot of stuff? or are there other things to consider. i seem to remember something about your tactics setting effecting the training of weapon skills. also does trying to shoot creatures from further away do something? any pro archer advice would be much appreciated.

Just shoot everything :) More experienced monsters give you more marks of course. Shooting far makes no difference. But I think that one monster gives you infinitely bow marks, unlike melee marks, if you continue shooting it.

I've actually once got Grand mastery with bows, and it took a long time in BDC shooting some 200 blue dragons. I don't actually know why I did that. Lvl 10 is already very good, especially if you are lucky enough to get Sun's messenger from somewhere.
The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt.

Also, you probably will not gain any marks at all if you're on cowardly; I don't think there are any other differences between the tactics.

Cowardy tactic does not affect getting missile and shield marks, only melee. It is easy to check :)

The general rule is: fire at anything that moves. Eventually, Grand Mastery is your to boast with.

Or, shoot at Emperor Molochs. That works as well, maybe even better then just shooting at random.

I know that every time you hit a GM you get 8 marks, IIRC.
