I've been playing a gnomish elementalist (atm something like clvl 30, mostly thanks to the ring of elemental mastery I found so I could spend some quality time in ToEF killing fire creatures and obtaining levels and equipment (level 30 frost bolt REALLY works wonders against those fire creatures). Now I got to the casino level and very conveniently there was a coaligned altar AND a large giant vault on previous level (got Ironfist and Long Sting there). The problem is I thought of trying to win loadsa money from the slot machines and trying to get postcrowned (never been post or precrowned ever, offering the giants only took me to very close) but if I do that the big casino guard will block the downstairs. There was not a single wand of teleportation in gift shop and not spellbook of tele either and I have not found a single one either (at least I haven't got one ATM). Should I try going back out and go get the one guaranteed in dusty dungeon (gonna take a lot of time). I haven't got any scrolls of chaos resistance or potions of cure corruption and have no teleport control (29 blink dogs killed and not a SINGLE corpse, duh !) so I can't even get the ones from dwarven mystic. Or should I wait for the shop to restock and hope getting one then. Or should I just go on.[br]Oh, and how about weapon choice, lately I've been dual-wielding maces of destruction (found two with pretty nice bonuses). Should I go on like that (got two-weapon combat and tactics from Bart and got Backstabbing and find weakness from SoEducations pretty early) or wield staff of wanderer (crowning gift) or Long Sting ?

is Long Sting a one-handed?

You should use the shortcut to Dark Forge (unless you've killed loads of eternal guardians :), then get the wand. What alignment is your char?

Long sting is two-handed (Glaive).

Eternal guardian was passed with the ring (getting the ring was piece of cake). I'm not too sure about darkforge, don't have much lightning-spells (only some elementalist-standard lightning balls) and IIRC not much else works on those steel golems. Though maybe I could get some lightning wands, gotta check.

Char is neutral (as just about all my chars).

The problem being in this situation that you can't get to the shortcut without teleporting the big casino guard away. Some ideas of moving him are.

Any form of teleportation scroll/wand/book.

Spend all your money in the casino. (this doesn't always work)

Order a companion to attack, then when (s)he does exchange places with him, moving the casino guard. I just tested this with a quickling queen companion in g16p2, the big guard is the only one that becomes hostile and that's towards your pet.

Staff of the wanderer gives immunity to shock - brilliant if your just about to do the blue dragon caves. And if ur trained in staves they get nice DV bonuses that would make up for lack of a shield. [+6 +2] and +6 toughness is nice too.
Long sting has a lovely paralyzation resistance but is pretty crappy everywhere else.

So, in my opinion i'd keep wielding what you've got, but if you goto the blue dragon caves take wanderer, and always carry long sting around with you. There might be a dorn beast or a mimic hivemind around the next corner. (or even a ghul)

As for shock immunity, I don't need the staff for that, I got shock immunity as crowning gift. The companion trick could work, IIRC I have couple of scrolls of familiar summoning. Hmmm... Ghuls... Don't remember ever losing a high-level character to them, only some low-level ones. As for mimics, I found a mimic tension room in the CoC graveyard level. Easily blasted most of them with frost/fire bolt, then the remaining master mimic paralysed me. Luckily it was badly injured and panicked away so I survived that.

Aaargh ! Shouldn't have mentioned never having lost a high level char to one... Having just lost one human elementalist to a REALLY stupid mistake (dipping potions to the ancient scythe and other items to the !oRC. Dipped one item - BOOM ! Game over) I started a new one. Got real lucky, found a ring shop in PC:3 and potion shop and scroll shop in UD. SMC was a lot of trouble (clvl ~14) but I made it. Pyramid was a breeze as was dwarven graveyard. But no ring of ice or a fireproof blanket. Tried several times restocking the ring shop - loads of ring but NO ring of ice. Oh well, try CoC then. In DH:2 I walked towards a innocent-looking item on floor... I guess everyone can guess what happened then...

Thing about mimics - having blesssed seven-league boots and speed about 130 gives you an opportunity to discover disguised mimics before
they shed their camouflage. Stand next to suspected item and "l"ook at it. If the weight is shown, then it isn't a mimic. Otherwise, you may backstab him, cast Slow, or go some steps back and kill him with spells or ranged weapons.

The SMC is that cave slightly north-west of the town, you know the one where it's not a good idea to hang out too long...

You tell me that... Recently I had a human elementalist. Had done PC and found three fountains there. Fountain scumming netted me teleport control and teleportitis but (apparently) no curse/doom (nice). And best of all - a wish. I used it on rings of ice (for ToEF, one can usually find pretty nice stuff there if one can just avoid losing stuff to heat). Then went to SMC and tried to find downstairs...

Now, everyone can guess what happened... Define irony...
