I've never really carefully played a character that was companion reliant.

But now my lv20 human merchant read off a scroll of familiar summoning on DH:2 for fun, and a greater earth elemental appears.

Its a fairly ideal companion due to its regeneration and relatively high PV. The fact that its extremely powerful is supposed to be a boon, i think, but what makes me nervous is that the amount that it hits for is more HP than i have.

Just a few questions:

1) If i leave it somewhere and come back for it, will it ever turn hostile because i'm not with it?

2) If it steps on a trap i didnt create, will it turn hostile?

3) Actually, aside from me blasting it with a wand or something, what can i do that WOULD turn it hostile?

Just concerned that it'll turn on me without warning, and its fully capable of killing me in one strike.

2. I dont think so. But if you will step on a trap - it will. Also, using wand of destruction on D50 levers will make companion hostile, if he's nearby.

I read sofm on D50 and also got gr.earth elem.
I used him to clean the level completely, no monster was a match to him, and he got a level every 2-3 kills...like, wow...i wonder if i took him to a dragon caves...

Also if you leave his LOS he will probably turn hostile

1. Oh, i forgot, that also happened to me a couple of times, but i dont remember much, maybe it was earlier versions ? In 1.1.1 i left a dark orc in Terinyo in the beginning and got him on my way back after winning. He was waiting patiently for 140 days or so. :)

"Also if you leave his LOS he will probably turn hostile"

That works for tame monsters, not companions, i think.

That could even be a strategy: bring a couple of SoFS:s to D:50 and let them work their magic...

So far you have only killed one wild cat.

The best place is D:50, for obvious reason.

I tried a couple on ChAoS pLaNe, got one balor (good enough) and two masses of primal chaos (not very good). Didn't help much against Andor due to being para'd all teh time thuogh.

I got a Chaos Hydra when I used SoFS in the Dwarven Halls...

I raised it in the living forest

But when I used Stethoscope on it it was 37 LV and Lots and lots of damage.

Good place to Train a pet which is good already is the living forest.

Also had once a Lich king... was quite boring...

He summoned creatures to aid hima and me and on the end I couldnīt move anywhere cause I was lawful...

The Big room also was under my control, now new monsters spawned there because of the monsters summoned by the lich king.

Had a quickling king once, that was good because he could keep up with my very speedy monk

far ago, i've made some extensive testing (100 or 200 trials, i think) in the DH, with a scummed char (reloaded the same save a lot of times, used a blessed sofs). don't remember the exact results, but DH seem pretty good for familiar summoning - you get a GEE in about 50% cases or so (or maybe even more=). other creats that come to mind include master liches, chaos jellies and other elementals (not necessarily greater). in general, if you use two sofs, you have an almost-guarantee elemental companion, and a very high chance of recieving at least one GEE, which is a nice toy by the xlevel you probably have (~15).
