There are many ways.

The blessed Scroll oF FS is the most straightfoward, of course.

Bards start out with a companion varying by race.

Farmers start out with a big dog.

Characters with the Music skill can tame animals, based on their skill. This is the specialty of Bards, but other PCs may obtain the music skill as well.

Figurines of wondrous power, if blessed and used, will generate a tame companion corresponding to the figure it represents.

Hawkslayer from HMV will become your companion if you know the password, Iceberg.

You can buy a flesh golem companion from the Mad Doctor in HMV.

The cute dog, if found alive, will be your companion on PC:6

Necromancers can use their abilities to generate slaves from corpses.

Beggars can be tamed with gold and/or food.

Cats can be tamed by throwing fish meat at them.
Dogs can be tamed by throwing bones.

(not too sure if they become your companions, but at least non-hostile)

Cats (wild cats and cave lions, not tigers), become your companions when fed rat corpses and fresh/raw meat.
Dogs like meat too, not only bones. This includes blink dogs.

An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

Has anyone ever wished for a figurine of Andor Drakon?

Try figurine of "ElDeR cHaOs GoD" instead.

More ways (the last?) to get companions:

Elementalists can summon an elemental pet after level 40.
Beastfighters can summon 2d2 cave bears after level 25.
Druids can summon 1d3 major animals after level 25.

IIRC you can't wish for specific figurines, just for "figurines of wonderous power", but an "ElDeR cHaOs GoD figirune" has been cheated in once. I'm sure a post about it is somewhere on this forum.

Is a djinni actually a nice pet?

Not that theres any possbility it would be more useful than a wish of course (unless its *enourmously* powerful.. but i doubt that) but just curious if they're even mildly useful to summon with the ring.

Not really. They aren't as good as Greater Earth elementals or Ancient Karmic Dragons, both of which I've gotten with a Scroll of FS when on DH:2. If you have some good healing you can get one (they don't regen) but otherwise a Greater Earth Elemental is way better, and of course, scrolls of FS are more easily obtainable than RoDS.

Mine just cleared D50 for me with no healing...I just had to watch his back>:)

I always get nervous around powerful companions. I always play solo if possible. Bad run ins in the past have made me extremely paranoid about pets..

Just one remark for you, ppl, companions are not the same thing as tame animals. You cannot make a companion with music. Companions are with you for life, as far as i know, tamed animals will shrug off your leash, eventually.

Speaking of GEE - not that good, one reason - wall burrowing. You set him nice in a tight hallway, and he just wanders off if you wont tell him to attack in time. Balors are even worse...
