Cast the spell on "5", the same way you zap your wands of digging or dig with a pickaxe.

P.S. I'm not sure if you can do that with the spell, if you cannot, then you are doomed to search for wands of digging (If I Recall Correctly, the ancient dwarf gives you one for completing the quest, so you can come back later to dig the sword up.)

I'm afriad you'll have to find a tool. The easiest way - lure monsters into dwarftown and make them fight the dwarves - they leave pickaxes.

P.S. The first thing that crossed my mind when reading your post - "Why doesn't he want to find the World of Darkness, and what's it have to do with the subject?!"

You can also wait on the stairs of dwarftown and spend time until a dwarf is adjacent to you, then go down the stairs and he will follow so you can kill him at your leisure. :D

Or go to lvl 4 of the tower of eternal flames with high piety then pray, hoping for a pickaxe.

have you finished the pyramid (there is that stash on the first level)? I find that if you hang around the ID Dwarves somewhat common...wait around and kill em'

Yes, but there are DEFINITELY dwarves in dwarftown. :P

I have used the method I described to completely clear dwarftown... except for Thurundarr, the Priest, and Glod.

It's the surest method of getting a pick when you need it, rather than hoping a dwarf or pick will appear somewhere else.

True, but if he has mystic shovel the whole argument is kind of moot :)

1. cast mystic shovel while standing on top of the grave, select "5" as the direction.
2. if you really want a pickaxe, do the bottom level of the pyramid, there is one hidden to the far east on a trap.
3. if you still really want a pickaxe, clear out dwarftown. Lure and then kill if you are chaotic, lure other monsters down there if you are not chaotic.
4. if you still really really really want a pickaxe go to the top of the ToEF with high piety and pray.

Well this getting pickaxe thing is interesting for others too...I'm still working on a certain troll mindcrafter (damn but they are hard to exp) and have decided to smith up a good load of eq for the ToEF. Got an eternium helm, adamantium boots, and mithril girdle to work on. I started mining out the ogre cave, about 3/4 done but keep running out of pickaxes. Mining skill helped a lot, I blessed all pickaxes, but still broke a lot of them.

Oh and gemology is nicer than I though...getting a lot of sellable gems, the semi-useful gems of power and health and Ive found 7 crystals of knowledge so far...not bad for a dumb troll.
(Yeah he's not dumb anymore)
(Tried to increase mana with a PoEx after scumming St to 57. Guess what...He is now a very charismatic troll. Mana is of course 8.)

Molach: you do know that Glod can fix the pick axes for you?

Glod is dead, baby.
Glod is dead.

He always gets himself killed by some horrible demon

I do it mostly for the anvil, they are rarer than forges. But if he can repair pickaxes I might take the anvil from Kherab instead.

Or he always gets himself killed by me, cuz I want to use the forge cost-free more than fix a pickaxe.

molach -> glod may fix anything broken/rusty, and this makes him useful. in my games, glod prefers to stay alive.
and about the wand of digging - there's no guaranteed one among old dwarf's rewards, a guarantee WoD is dropped by kelly instead (i may be wrong).
