Ha.
Quest for a paladin win continues...first guy was invincible! (Which means of course that the RNG read my thoughts and killed him scumming strength in the wilderness...stupid luggage)

New guy...screaming along. Gremlin scumming, level 21 drakish paladin ready for fire tower. Ready for this?

Gremlin scumming:
RoDS = 2.
Rings of Ice = 0.

Waterproof blankies = 8
Fireproof blankies = 0

Muahaha.
Before you ask, I didn't wish for either of these because I had to save Kelly and get some 7lb.

As well...I didn't know that writing sets took down your mana stat. How could I have not noticed that?

(paladin spellcaster with mana = 4 now >:)

*sigh*

hmmm it does regenerate i think... or at least its so low now it will probably grow a bit quicker since you prob have good mana potential, oh and maybe eat the Multi headed chaos wyrm? coruption but i think with that low of mana it will give you a fair bit

Or use a potion of exchange. Cursed would be best. Any stat can be trained with Garth except mana and appearance.

And 3 of the stats are very to get high anyway

Thanks Molach...never thought of that.
He died of course. Scumming the ID for my fireproof blanket petrified by a gorgon.

I thought I read in Andy Williams that the chance of petrification was drastically reduced with a high DV? This guy had DV 92, intrinsic lucky and fate smiles, blessed Ankh, and one breath attack killed him.

Finally managed to get a Ring of Ice (used PoEx and viola).

Final count from Gremlin scumming:
RoDs = 3
Rings of weakness = 2
Rings of Ice = 0

Plain blankets = 5
Waterproof Blankets = 14
Fireproof Blankets = 0

I should have known he would meet an ignoble death.

I will win with a Paladin Lord Fred...oh yes i will. :)

Excuse my ignorance, but how exactly do you scum gremlins? Just kill them in their cave?

DOnt remember anymore, but I think that you take a fluff ball to let's say D:9 and make a water trap. walk over it and you'll suddenly find yourslef surrounded but gremlins. I usually pickpocket, then kill them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't played ADOM for about 6 months. I'm off to play now. damn this game's got me hooked

Isn't it possible to dip waterproof blankets into a blessed potion of exchange and get (with a little luck) fireproof blankets?
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.

Then next stupid question - how would one get a fluff ball?
I remember finding them in loot, but mayhap there's a guaranteed one somewhere out there.

Probably the best place to find fluff balls is in the gremlin cave (big surprise), but I don't think there is a guaranteed one

I have two (somewhat noobish) questions:

1.) What does "RNG" stand for?

2.) In what way are fluff balls useful?

Thanks in advance. =)

ChampionEternal:

1. RNG = Short for Random Number Generator, also sometimes seen as Random Number God seeing as to how the RNG sometimes seems biased against the player, even down to sadistic levels.

2. Fluff balls create gremlins. Gremlins reproduce in water. Gremlins can be scummed for useful stuff and experience.

Knud: yes it is. Though they could also transform into plain blankets, keys, fletchery sets or other tools. In fact I have used b!oEx to transform surplus keys (this way one can get more than one blanket at once). Though it can lead to nasty surprises - imagine dipping 19 keys into a b!oEx and getting 19 fletchery sets...

Thanks!

I like random number god better. I remember an old game I used to play, Quick Magick... I swear, every single time I said my character was invincible, I would die within 5 minutes.

So, if I got rid of all the fluff balls in the gremlin cave, could I cut off the seemingly endless flow of gremlins?

The gremlins are automatically generated there. Thus techically you cant.

tongHoAnh: but if one disarms all water traps there that will greatly reduce the amount there.

Disarm the water traps. Cool, I'll remember that. =)

Referring back to the original post: How does one "scum for strength in the wilderness"?

Also, is there somewhere I could find answers to all my noobish questions regarding strange acronyms, ADOM jargon, and commonly used tactics for keeping ADOM characters alive?

One way ofscumming for strenght in the wilderness is to search for warbands of stone giants in the mountains, or by searching for ogre armies in the plains, hills or forest (once you reach lvl 28)

To further specify Morio's point (and to spoil you rotten :), the corpses of stone giants and ogres have a chance of increasing your strength, one that drastically decreases as your strength increases. In fact, it seems to pretty much stop around 25 strenght or so.

One way to get around that is to find a ring of weakness, which reduces your strenght to 2 or 3 when you wear it. So, with that in mind, you would clear one of those encounters, harvest all the corpses into one spot, drop ALL of your things next to that spot (so you aren't crushed when you put on the ring of weakness), put on the ring of weakness, and chow down. Then, when you take it off, your strength will have permanently increased by however many points it increased in your weakened state.

I can't remember off hand, but I think the ring auto-curses, as in curses when you put it on, so have some scrolls of uncursing handy if you plan to use it.

To a lesser extent, sickness and starvation can accomplish that same goal-- decreasing strength in order to assure strength increases, but these carry certain dangers. Sickness, while not really dangerous, is hard to self-induce without herbalism, and starvation may cause danger in that it is kind of hard to gauge when you will die from it while you are scumming, and you will have to re-induce it after every corpse. I seem to remember someone's rule of thumb was to not let your stats get below one half of their un-starved maximum, but still, be very careful.

I'd say it is better not to starve than to starve.

The mentioned chewing is easiest for Drakelings and PC's having appropriate corruption ("exhale sulfur"). This makes emptying stomach quite easy.
Who else would get rid of ~80 satiation points per round?

um. no one's mentioned the survival/stomafillia strength-scumming method?

store all items(except stomafillia if you're using that)
go to wilderness
equip ring of weakness
make sure you are strained!(with the !)
enter wilderness
'w5' until starving(STR goes up here)

eat stomafillia and repeat until STR: 99

OR

go back to wilderness
survival(in forest) until bloated
enter wilderness
'w5' until starving and repeat until STR: 99

sometimes it might be pretty hard for a melee character to whack up the stone golems or hill giants at STR:1 or 2 and its frustrating when they dont drop corpses(especially when the PC has no food preservation). so i usually do it this method.
