what are your most common causes of death? also post remedies for other players' causes so that we might improve our game.

for me(in no particular order):
1. early game, cant get rid of cursed weapon
2. ACW without frost bolt
3. blup's mom
4. paralyse(ghul, floating eye)
5. mixed tension rooms
6. nasty shit in dwarven halls
7. early game, orc/goblin/kobold chieftain
8. 100-point criticals(elementals/steel golems)
9. early game, undead wilderness encounter in swamps on way to CoC
10. teleportitis + no teleport control(i just quit for this one)

i find it weird that ive never died to gorgons before.

I find that I get surrounded in the small cave a lot. That's just me being dumb - a lot.

I used to get hosed by giant slugs when searching for Keethrax annoyingly often, until I decided to try killing them with missiles while maneuvering to stay out of the straight-line compass points that the slug can spit acid at during its move. Allowing spellcasting to select targets like missile attacks would make these things a lot nastier.

16. Going to places/getting into situations you are not completely ready for yet.

23. Power failiure.

33. foolishness of mine:). GoG removal while carrying tons of gold, mana orb overusage, etc. (these are methods my characters use to commit suicide after xlevel 30).
34. holding a single numpad key for too long (too many combat turns, that is). an ugly variant of #26. character usually die this way by xlevel 20.
35. holeinthewall - agressive assassins+trying to avoid agressive beggars=too much for a level 1 lamer unable to hold his sword properly. this is quite common for challenging race/class combos.

36. Reading too much. This includes some spoily forums :) and books of Wish, Create Item, Death ray, Earthquake etc. by non-spellcaser classes. Dying occurs due to fireball/HP drain.
37. Drinking from puddles, thus turning into a goat :)- refference to Ukrainian folk tale. In reality death occurs due to water snakes.
38. Trying to invent new recipes - RNG doesn't like creative alchemists.
39. Dipping wrong item (which cannot be polymorphed due to danger level) into wrong potion (raw chaos) - KABOOM! -

But hey! We've fallen into listing almost all causes of death, not just the most common ones.

For early game, I find that my most common cause of death is
40. Pit vipers (kills off most of my new chars that never live up)
41. Gnolls (for some reason - they don't seem as hard as they are)
42. Blink dogs. Summoning, + align drop makes me lose prayability.

Mid game
2. AKW

Late game
43. ElDeR ChAoS gOd.

"But hey! We've fallen into listing almost all causes of death, not just the most common ones. "
i guess it'd become boring if everyone listed only the same stadndard ways of death. the posts above seem to make an interesting list together, so i insist - keep the topic alive, but also strain your memory and try to bring something new in!;d a tiny bonus:

43. random wilderness encounters near terinyo [hill orcs are the most abominable], when i have not even reached level 2.

My chars mostly die due to boredom or carelessness. In mid-game the water dragon (the bigger one, that is ;) has killed a lot of my chars. Including my promising hurthling mindcrafter a few days ago :(.

Also, 44) special insta-kill attacks like gorgons and death-ray casting monsters kill some chars, but that's mostly because of carelessness..
The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt.

i chicken out halfway 75% of the time in the small cave when i get like level 3 to avoid death.

keethrax can be taken out after training to level 11-12 in ID cause he's pretty annoying to deal with sometimes.

13. in the ID, go up and down staircase to keep finding new rooms. scum these rooms for rations.

20. potions of healing cure sickness IIRC. and they're pretty common even low level (:

27. casters can bolt him out easy, melee characters dont need to take him for exp, theres ID (:

35. level at ID first (:

43. the orcs(forest + hill) are a good way to get guaranteed crude spears slightly later though, coward run around pick up thrown spears run.

47. The sickness "last blast" (you may not have seen this because it doesn't always happen IIRC)
48. Trying to tame greater claw bugs with a level 1 bard
49. Entering the bugvillage underground level and getting instakilled
50. Dark elven priests! :@!
51. Giant slugs acid attack. Extremely annoying
52. Deity annoyed -> inventory cursed -> quit game

50) is especially dangerous when you have killed lots of spiders earlier so you get lots of highly experienced tarantulas:-( Those can kill lvl50 chars! Serious.

55) Three words - RNG. The most common cause of death of all PC. Other is indifferent :)
Seriously, taking into account all what is written here, PC has a great chance to die every turn of game. The most common causes of death written in GuideBook IMHO is enough.

You step upon a loose stone.

You notice a clicking sound.

*KABOOM*.

you are suddenly engulfed in a huge explosion.

The cave tiger grunts one last time before it is consumed by roaring flame.

*Moaning Patheticly, it falls to the ground. Suddenly the cats spirit rises from its body and then dissapears.*

Regarding vortices & low level PCs, always keep a scroll of darkness handy (unless you can already cast the spell, of course). I have *never* heard of a vortex exploding in the dark. Saves your skin every time.
