Im having trouble in greater fire vault. My gnomish thief xp lvl 35 with NICE equipment is doing fine with any monsters but i want to protect the loot that the monsters are dropping and collect some of it. Does anyone have any strategies for getting less fire resistant dropped items. e.g. potions etc.

Theres goodies to be had and my gnome wants it!

Thanks in advance!

Simple: Don't let them breath fire on the loot. Fight them over corners, so they'll shoot fire only on you.

An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

Stuff on the floor will still ignite over time, however. There're lots of others scumming time, just get the orb and get outta there.

You could try magic missiling them from around corner if the layout of the vault enables it and you have a high-level MM. A high level magic missile is effective versus just about anything and doesn't destroy stuff.

Death Ray is every hero's best friend when clearing vaults.

Seeing that you're a thief (and thus probably won't have this spell), I'd go for the "attack around corner" strategy mentioned earlier.
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.

Earthquake is only worthwhile to pass rivers and generate rocks for hurthling chucking

pass rivers?

i'm sure 1.1+ has rivers going all the way across the diggable rock. i seem to recall this through experience.

if that leaves just generating rocks(which can be collected in guaranteed ant level from PC), then earthquake needs to be improved.

Earthquake generates non-water squares. Probably the rocks falling into the river.

Frost Bolt does indeed destroy items--potions, books, and scrolls are vulnerable; other things are usually fine.
