I have some totally unrelated questions:

1.What happens if you 'u'se the fire orb? The guidebook says what the others do but not this.

2. Are there any hard monsters that won't easily shrug off or resist petrification and death ray? These spells seem useless sometimes.

3. Kinda extreme: If I convert the dwarftown altar to chaotic and lure the priest to another level (w'out killing him), can I sacrifice dwarves without making them hostile?

1. In appendix L, the Guidebook states that 'u'sing the fire orb generates a fireball, probably like the Fireball spell, just more powerful due to the enormous corruption. Normal fireballs would by far not be powerful enough to make that corruption worthwhile...

2. The killer bugs and greater claw bugs in the Bug-Infested Temple don't. They never shrug off bolt spells of any kind, as far as I know. This is useful, since you don't want to be hit by them in any case, so use Death Ray if you don't want to take any risks.

3. If you really want to know that, you have to try for yourself. I don't think whether the priest is present or not makes any difference, though. The only way to successfully lure him out of the level is using ventriloquism, if I recall correctly.

2. I killed Ki-Rin with a death ray once. Took about 7 castings to wack him. Monsters without obvious death ray imunity (undead, unlife) don't have a 100% chance to shrug off Death Ray. Just keep casting. Especially if you're fighting *lots* of *tough* monsters in a tight corridor.
3. I suppose that sacrificing the first dwarf would be totally equal to killing one. Saced creatures do appear in the kill list.. So, I suppose, your firs sac would resolve your problem - they'll all run towards you, and you'll be able to sac 'em all.

3. If they do step on the altar, that is.

Death ray is one of the best spells in the game. Excellent for clearing greater vaults (no equipment destruction), or the blue dragon caves.

Does having a better spell effectiveness help in preventing "shrugging"?

Yes. it does. You will start noticing at 20+ (about 200 castings or 20000 PP)

Hmm.. Considering that Death Ray books are quite rare it would not be that easy to get spell effectiveness to 20+.
My DE wizard doesn't have much choice, though :)

Greater Titans are less vulnerable to Magic Missile than to Death Ray. At least after dozen of castings of Missile I've noticed some difference, while Death Ray had been repeatedly shrugged off.

I wouldn't know about that, every time I see a GT I praise whatever god I'm currently worshipping for having dodge and 7lb's and run.

Greater titans are pretty easy if you are playing an archer (lvl 40 or higher) since you can completely dodge the deadly eternium quarrels (a good way to get good missiles)

if you have a moloch armor greater titans are a useful source of St and To(?).

Hm. I think those are two separate thoughts - 1) if you have a moloch armor, it's good 2) greater titans are a useful source of St and To.

I just don'nt see the logical connection between the statements - if you think that killing GT while wearing moloch armor is easy, I must disappoint you - 15000 stones, -20 speed, -20 Dx, and -30 DV are together all too much.
