Nope. Artifacts are indestructible. Fire, Acid or anything else from this world cannot harm them. Have no fear and proceed to cast your item damage spells. (Remember, however, that there are extremely valuable non-artifact items that CAN be destroyed this way.)

Well, they are not INdestructible, if you think about it... There are some exceptions.

The most common way to destroy an artifact is to sacrifice it on an altar. (Hmm... Come to think of it, we don't really know what the god needs all that junk we sacrifice to him all the time for. what use are 200 blessed stomafillia to a god? Or those 100 sis? We shall never know.)

Technically, feeding the demented ratling also counts as destroying an artifact, since it is not available anymore after being fed. (Killing the demented ratling doesn't let you get the artifacts back, or am I wrong?)

Also, if you drop an artifact other than a si in the ID and leave the correspondent level without picking it up before, that artifact is lost to you forever. (Yet, it is not destroyed - It is just lost.)
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Think of when you pray for food, or health. Think of any crowning gifts you have seen.

IIRC not only the Si returns to your backpack when you leave a level in the ID, atleast the scptre of chaos returns, and I think all other artifacts too. In previous versions it might have been possible to lose artifacts in the ID, but I don't think it's possible anymore.

I never dared to even try, so you are most probably right about that.

But you can lose them in the wilderness, right?

The artifact 'sulphuric potion' (granting literacy) is also destroyed when you drink it.

You can smith Artifacts into destruction. Simply selecting the artifact by itself to melt down doesnt work, you have to select it along with a pile of smeltable weapons/armor/ore.

You can kick the Phial and probably the Sulphuric potion and shatter them as well.
