Is it recommended for illiterate PCs to go to the CoC ASAP to get the potion?

Most illiterate PCs aren't that dependant on scrolls (or books) anyway, so don't rush it. Don't risk your life trying to get the potion too early.

Most items important for fighting type characters (most illiterates are fighters) can be identified by their weight alone, so the need for SoIs is not that urgent.

Don't forget that dark sage corpses can make you literate as well... This has worked out for my drakish beastfighter :)

Nah, just do what you would normally do. You will get there eventually; and when you do, you usually have lots and lots of scrolls to try out. ^^

I can see that most illiterate PCs usually rely on fighting but there are times where you sometimes need that skill, though I'm not sure if they can read spellbooks though after getting literacy.

Sure they can. Just not that successfully.

I agree that there are times where you need to read a scroll, but that doesn't justify getting killed while going into the CoC unprepared.

As far as the game is concerned, nothing justifies getting yourself killed... unless...

>.<

Nevermind.
Molach: "I like to have 200+ hp and over 5 good healin potions when I do [the fire] temple. AND some way of killing the Wyrm"

Morio: "Some way of killing the worm is recommended, yes :D"

With a melee character I can get through the CoC to dwarftown fairly easily. Literacy can also be acquired from scrolls/potions of education, but all 3 items are rare and the Potion of Literacy can only be acquired by the first dwarven quest (not sure if you can get it by post/pre crowning)

I wonder.. Finishing the game without reading any scrolls at all - is that possible?

I can't think of any necessary part of the game where you need to read scrolls. Scrolls are there to help your character improve or survive, but they are not necessary. It will be difficult though, since scrolls especially scrolls of chaos resistance can really save your PC's life.
