So the guidebook recomends 4x4 patterns right? I was messing around with herb combos and i found a very nice extension of the 4x4 pattern. It looks like this.
""..
""..
....
..""
..""
And when it is time for all of the herbs in the squares to blossom, which they will, you end up with this
""..
""..
."".
..""
..""
You can do this with many squares theoretically, but if you dont pick the new ones that sprout it will ruin your garden, and they dont always wait for you to pick em. Anyone got any better strategys that they use?

I generally just do 4x4 squares; monsters will generally distract me sooner or later, anyway, so I would rather just wait for the herb bushes to re-flower before I pick.

In other news, I generally over-use the word "generally".

You should get a version of Life to experiment with. You can easely help bushes to grow by picking the right places.

I think the point is to have stable patterns that not only stay stable, but regrow bushes. I'm not sure if there are very many besides the 2x2 one that actually do this, though.

this pattern:
.".
"."
.".

shall provide 1 herb bush to be picked clean each season. If you have it run 2 seasons, then you have to picks 5 of the bushes (or risk an explosion)

still, i prefer the 4x4 pattern. it's much more tame ^^

the tags to use are [pre][/pre] with capital letters
which sets the font to a predetermined font, like this:

4x4 patterns? So, you mean...

[pre]
""""
""""
""""
""""
[/pre]

?

Or are you talking about 2x2 patterns?

[pre]
""

I am confused.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Yes the 2x2 pattern is what you want in the end, but patterns that help you create many 2x2 patterns are what we. or at least i am after. I just discovered a very useful pattern for this purpose.
"""
"."
.."

what i like about this pattern is that it spreads rapidly and chaotically, so that you are less likely to get f'd up by very fast generations (2 at once is not that uncommon). It also can last a long time, not that that is a necessity, but it does prevent fast generations from ruining your pattern, and can result in many 2x2 patterns if done right. Without alot of wait.

A common

pattern that is made into

is another cheap way to get herbs.
