Ive been playing adom for bloody ages, but have never seriously tried one of these characters, much prefering combat types like assassins and barbarians, so the problem is these pansys die very quickly :p
I know merchants get some sweet items, and can throw coins, and farmers have archery (but dont start with any missiles) So some good advice would be handy please.

Farmer can go doing (same as fighter) anything anyway. Merchants stick to ID.

I've tried the "Farmer Maggot" challenge a while ago (start a hurthling farmer and win), and the result was over 100 deaths for a win. Of course, I played that winner farmer very conservatively at the beginning, building gear and supplies, and then found kickass items (bracers of war, eternium spear of devastation, protector, nature companion, preserver...). So you'll need a lot of luck and patience...
The Great Wyrm of Order breathes light (more) - wow, you feel very smart!

Merchant:
Their coins are one of the best ranged weapon at early levels, primarily because it has the possiblity of hitting anything, and you shall never run out of ammo (well, almost) By the time I have the gears and HP to take on anything decent, most likely that my melee and ranged weapon skill lvl are 1.

Farmers:
Has been long since I played one but IIRC:
1. They have a companion to begin with, as good as half of an AoLS in early days.
2. They start with a scythe, which is both a spear and a herb collector.
3. They have fletchery set to begin with. Once you got a hatchet (or just kick doors), voila...
There might be more, but I guess that's enough to play out the beginning ^^.

Edit: added the fletchery set to farmer's goodies.

How does a scythe work as a herb collector (in the game)?

IIRC, collecting herbs with scythe in your tool slot help improving herb's quality...or is it?

A scythe in the tool slot? May I ask HOW can you do such a thing?

Just sticked it in, and confirmed negative. So then what was that - scythe or sickle - or then are there any benefit at all? Lol, from when did I have this piese of falsehood in my head?

Scythes and Sickles can be given to farmers (the npc, brown f farmers). THey give large rations in return... which is useless, since a large ration costs less then the said weapons.

Farmers are quite good. One of the months gives 20% less marks needed for polearms. Now, this means that if you manage to find something good early on (I found the Scorched Spear last time I tried, lucky me), then you can quickly reach GM (relatively) and just whack monsters up.
Also, I found Thunderstroke in a gr8er vault. Meh... I used bows last time I checked

I had a farmer winner a while back- see the Hof character "Heavy plow". He didn't do it the easy way- never found SLB, had 20 years of aging as a human, and on the cat lord level, the Cat lord was generated right next to him, almost killed him but he had time to climb up and telelport.
What I did to survive was use missles a lot, take the candle birth sign, and get that toughness up to 26 as soon as possible with herbs, to name few things.
