how can you raise skill maximums?

I've been frustrated for a while by my Dodge skill staying with a
maximum of 51 and wanting to raise it above that; but on one level-up I
could only increase 3 skills before they were all at their maximums,
and this last level-up I didn't get to raise any skills!

It's rather irritating...

so, what can I do?

Um. Try dropping everything heavy you have in a safe place, probably your armor as well, and just running back and forth past weak monsters?

how would that help?

(I can see how that could help with dodge or if I had low block; but *all* of my skills are at their maximums, and although I don't care about some, I do want to finish raising climbing, dodge, tactics, and a few others. So, this character is currently unplayable until I figure this out...)

what level is your character?

if you want to raise the skills when you level up, you have to use them

The guidebook says you can only raise Dodge by dodging spells or missiles, not melee attacks. So I think going to the wilderness and waiting for barbarian encounters is the way to go.

As far as I know, you get skill increases (without gaining levels) even way past Level 50, so no worries there... You will always be able to raise skills.

The guidebook has a list of things you can do to train skills (Section 0.4). To raise Climbing, for instance, you should go mountaineering a bit. To raise Tactics, keep switching between different fighting tactics.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!
