Ok, I've been playing this guy for a while now, since just after my win. He's a Dwarven fighter, but he's advancing very slowly. I'm level 20, and I've done everything I can get to at this point. I don't have enough deaths to get into the bug temple, the minotaurs won't let me in, I'm nowhere near being able to do the rift, and the fire temple is my big problem now. I've done the water temple just recently, and even got the potion from the snake's corpse (used all my precious holy water and two scrolls of uncursing once that was gone). But the big thing is I was just walking through the "big room" (which I pacified for the first time ever; but just because too much high-level shit was getting generated, too many cats and breeders too) when I saw a message I've never seen before: "Happy Birthday!" does this mean this guy has been going for a year of gametime? Either way, is he worth carrying on? I've got SOME scrolls of chaos resistance and two of the potions, but nothing else really. I've got no great weapons (I'm using Rolf's Companion, I've got a few GOOD weapons, though, a sword of sharpness, a +7 mace of destruction (no holy water to bless it yet though -like I said I'm out), no good armour at all (using a black dragon scale, something like (-1, -2) [-3, +11]) and a few other neat thins (elemental gauntlets, some misc. stuff. Can't seem to get crowned even though I've sacrificed probably 75,000 in gold... Should I keep going with this dude? Or should I start again?

Keep going.
Happy birthday just means that your characters birthday rolled around, not that you have been playing for a years worth.
On your birthday your extra lucky.

Black dragon scale is not that bad even though acid immunity isn't the most useful one. It has good PV, not too shabby DV and is relatively light. Water is relatively common so it shouldn't be too hard getting some HW. Just get some water (any buc-state will do) and drop it on a coaligned altar while piety level is at least "very pleased".

As for your problem of getting crowned: what alignment is your char ? Remember that getting crowned is not just a question of saccing enough but also being of extreme alignment (C-, N= or L+). If your char is not neutral you can't get to extreme alignment just by saccing, you'll need to do some chaotic/lawful acts as well. Also, 75000 gold may not be enough if you've been saccing gold over time some at a time since piety decreases over time. My way of getting crowned is collecting a heap of stomafillia (some 100+ blessed ones will do) and sac the lot at once. If big room has permanent stomafillia spots (I prefer 2x2 squares) you should be able to gather enough (herbalism is a BIG help there)

"and drop it on a coaligned altar while at least very close."

I think that you don't need to be even near very close to get holy water, very pleased should be enough.

Keep going you. Never give up.
Things to do:
Get some pickaxes, and find ore. Smith up some decent armor (get higher metal if you can, to use in the tower of fire). By armor I mean metal cap, boots, and girdle. I often make one of each type of metal, i.e. mithril cap, adamantium girdle and eternium boots, so I can use all types of ore.

Iron ore is not useful for fire tower, but should be for all other places. You can smith bracers of speed to become nice, crossbows along with the armor parts.

Dragon scale is adamantium, elven chain mail is mithril.

If you don't get crowned after 75k gold it is most likely that you need to become L+ first. At your level a blessed amulet of order would work well enough, wear it while you smith.

Do not suicide your character. If you get bored with life, go to DH:1 or 2 and start walking around there. Kill monsters. If you survive you gain exp and items. If not, well its better than quitting.

Your next goal could be either rift or fire temple. Somewhat dependant on items you got. Fire temple of course gives you access to the mighty casino...

Next time you kill a temple guardian, get the corpse cooked.
Your first will obviously be the Fire temple Wyrm. After you kill it, stand over its corpse and press "5" or "s". Or read a ratling note or whatever. Pick it up when you get the "Ancient Chaos Wyrm corpse is cooked by the heat". Do not wait longer, it could burn away. It should hold a lot better now. Other corpses can be cooked by fire. I often use fire or fireball wands for this - I got enough wands anyway...

To kill the wyrm you need dragon slaying or a better weapon. Crowning gift could be this weapon. Or minotaur axe if you advance to high enough level to do it. But Rolf's is not what you want to poke in the Wyrm's face

You do not want to do Minotaur Maze as a melee person. Heck, even being a caster is hard. You need a bunch of scrolls of magic mapping (8+) or the spell. Even with that, one of my characters got lost in the middle and couldn't find the way to go up. Killing the Wyrm shouldn't be hard, just whack it hard after softening it up. By no means quit. Picking axe is a good idea, or go and go into ID, or gremlin scum.

I was only going to do the maze for the experience and possibly the weapon. I haven't found any really killer weapons so I'm holding off on melee talents until I do, so now I'm picking carrying capacity talents. But I still need more. I'm almost always walking around at "Strained" and sometimes "Strained!" at this point...
I can cast some magic but my PP regen is shit, and with about 33 PP it's only for emergencies (teleport away from bad shit, fire-bolt down big trouble). I just hope this guy doesn't meet any high-level liches. Master Liches are no big problem but a King or Emporor would destroy him as they drain stats.

Minotaur maze really isn't worth it. You get stat-drained, equipment loss from traps, and what for? Hours of frustration, little xp, a very poor weapon (it's too heavy to use normally and doesn't let you wear a shield) and 1 PoCC. Totally not worth it. If you're after xp then go for the Rift (assuming you have the requisite skill levels).

As for high level liches, blessed arrows of undead slaying are your friend. Magic is kinda hopeless for your character, but missiles are easily trained and very effective.
