oh....boy, it'll take me forever to learn the use of every command......and I've been playin for a year now too.....

well, made new gnomish mindcrafter, found a adamantanium scimitar in Puppy Cave, after healing, very nice, and bought large shield, first time I ever used haggling.

Mindcrafters practically rape everything that's not undead or chaos, provided you have enough power points that is. Though fort the first time ever I accidentally used mindcraft on an undead: I thought that the damage that the manual stated was minor, but no, I accidentally attempted to use mind blast on a wight, and I lost 31 out of my 62 HP...and a mimic was right near me to boot.Luckily teleportitis from a pixie corpse kicked in:D

Before that though, I spent 3 days trapped in the ant level, had to tame several, music skill is useful bugs and stupid animals. I think that if I am able to get sword of nonnak, this char will kick some serious butt.

Made it to CoC, just did Pyramid, going to try for at least one precrowning, then going to try graveyard. for the first time ever, I didn't clear the pyramid top level completely, way too hard for mindcrafter when I only have 200 PP and I have to deal with 2 steel golems, animated armor, and the undead mummies, among a mimic hivemind....no thanks, I'll pass. I was trapped in a corner after getting Rehetep to critically injured, and was trapped in a corner and started to read a book of heal, so I luckily teleported(note that my teleportitis did not kick in when I needed:D)and killed the bastard, and left...very close situation. I just wish I had more PP, but less range, because my mind blast goes beyond my vision, and I accidentally contacted a revenant...ouch

well charged wand of teleport could be handy too. iirc, mindcrafters come with teleport control and there is one guaranteed.

Oh yeah, trollish wiz died because of my utter stupidity. I got a pet with a familiar summoning scroll - a Titan. I thought that he could prove useful in temples. I trained him to extremely experienced- he hit 1-5 times per round and had critted 450 at max per hit.

So there I was, at earth temple, the mobs around me. Started Ice Balling them. Titan was in the range of Wi32 Iceball, I saw it, I knew he would get angry if I hit him and still, like my hands were possessed by some Adom poltergeist(the one that causes all stupid deaths) I just kept Ice Balling. Titan got hit and became "slightly hostile"(Havent gotten that kind of description of a mob before. happened because I had healed Titan previously a lot so he had become very fond of me). He was slightly hostile so I went into his melee range with healing him in my mind(tried to get him back to neutral), didnt have time to heal him. in one round he killed me.

Reason why not to make long-term companions with non-bards, otherwise having a writing set and a SoFS is your best friend.

Even bards will suffer if they nuke their pet extremely experienced killer bug pet, wont they?

Tough luck.

I have a winner going now. Never won with a priest before, but this one is pretty easy. Human Priest, about to enter earth temple. Game turned from "mabye" to "oh yes" when I found a wand of wishing with 4 charges in bug temple (as I was leaving, muahaha). I even needed to save the K., so good job there. Also serpent bite for precrown was nice. Along with wyrmlance. And I found executer somewhere. Crowning gift was crap, of course. I ate a lot of bugs, so now I have 9 willpower. But thats not so bad, I have no ball spells either (hmm, mabye time to wish for some...?)

I still lug around 6 potions of gain attr., because I wanted to raise my WI up before quaffing them. And I still have 4 wishes, but gonna use one for acid ball books. And mabye strength of atlas as well, running somewhat low on them. Anyone know if I HAVE to wish for "rain of sorrow" books, or will acid ball work too?

Well, arcane spells cost 2x as much for clericals, and clericals cost 3x as much for arcanes, so I'd play it safe, and wish for rain of sorrow.

Currently have an extremely lucky drakish healer, 2 white pools in Puppy Cave, just got a wish from 2nd , 7LBs, I prefer to not let corruptions even happen. Going to risk char by emptying both pools, want an Rings of Invis for Vault, or daggers of death. Which is better, daggers of death, or phase daggers?

Bigger damage dice are more useful in the early game, penetration is more useful in the late. That's my opinion anyway.

You can't have both "acid ball" and "rain of sorrow" in one spell list, and the books aren't independent of eachother. "Rain of sorrow" is simply how acid ball appears on clerical characters. The spellbooks can probably be wished for by either name. Also, arcane spells don't cost more for clericals, or vice versa. It just takes more castings of the spell to raise the effectivity level.

Remember those dwarven merchants I mentioned? Well, here's a flg and what I wrote for it:

Back when Adom was a brand new experience for me, before I ever read the
guidebook or made it to the caves of chaos alive, I played dwarven merchants.
I appreciated appraising and detect item status, as then I didn't have to run
out to Barnabus' shop every time I found an interesting new weapon. Of course,
I didn't know that altars and priests can discover an items b/u/c status much
more easily. So, a parade of dwarven merchants wandered into the village
dungeon and the puppy cave (I didn't even know that the druid gave a quest)
to their deaths, and they were all in vain.

Now that I have some experience under my belt, and the ability to use slightly
more difficult characters, I've made this character as a tribute to the dwarves
who bravely sacrified themselves to me, and as a homage to my days of Adom
innocence. Now, I never keep track of everything that happens in game during
the playthrough, so I don't have this character's life compiled in story
format. I'll make sure to tell all the interesting parts somewhere in this
file.

Also, I haven't done the research on this, but this might be the first
character to kill Andor with a thrown coin.

Name: Tubirt Race: male Dwarf Class: Merchant
Eye color: brown Hair color: brown Complexion: brown
Height: 3'9" Weight: 158 pounds Scars: 3
Age: 60 (young)
-I never got aged a single year. Which is a shame, really. Grown-up
brings a stat boost, doesn't it?

Star sign: Unicorn Birthday: 3/Unicorn (day 93 of the year)
-My birthday elapsed during this game, and I happened to run into
a pool at the same time. I got death ray resistance from it, not
bad at all. Yet, I don't think anything ever shot a death ray at me.

YOUR HISTORY:
Your parents are travelling adventurers. They are doing moderately
well but are talented enough to survive.
As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents
seemed to have run out of luck. Their wealth was ever-declining and times
were very hard.
In your youth you worked a lot to become rich and famous later.
Consequently you rarely had enough time to play with other kids of your
age.
As a young adult you left your home because of trouble with your
parents. They opposed your plans for the future without understanding your
wishes. Thus you decided to live on your own. You wandered through the
country for many years, growing older and wiser and learning many things.
You decided to become a Merchant. During your apprenticeship you
specialized on magical potions.

His further life:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

After slaying Andor Drakon and dispersing his malevolent energies the
pillars of Order appear before you. All the forces of Order seem to be
united behind them. You are lifted to the status of an Avatar of Order and
the tales of your deeds are spread all over Ancardia.

Your deeds are recounted at camp fires and interpreted by philosophers and
priests alike. The common man looks up to you and you slowly start to be
revered as a minor power of Order. After a few millennia have passed you are
raised to the position of a demi-god to guard and protect Ancardia from the
forces of Chaos and Balance forever.

Under your guidance Ancardia becomes an orderly and organized world without
striking changes. Peaceful order (and boredom?) spreads and the world enters
an era of peace and tranquility never again leaving it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
His achievements during his adventures:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tubirt, the dwarven merchant, transformed into an avatar of Order.
He scored 11450541 points and advanced to level 50.
He survived for 0 years, 78 days, 20 hours, 57 minutes and 32 seconds
(143074 turns).
Tubirt visited 151 places.
His strength score was modified by +12 during his career.
His learning score was modified by +23 during his career.
His willpower score was modified by +22 during his career.
His dexterity score was modified by +28 during his career.
His toughness score was modified by +20 during his career.
His charisma score was modified by +13 during his career.
His appearance score was modified by +21 during his career.
His mana score was modified by +18 during his career.
His perception score was modified by +15 during his career.
He was the champion of the arena.
He was a member of the thieves guild.
He made a little water dragon very happy.
He killed the emperor of the ancient minotaur race.
-After I found two dead ends on level 6, all my scrolls of magic
mapping were used up. I considered just leaving the emperor on his
throne, since I don't have any practical reasons to kill him anyways.
I decided to finish him off afterall when I got my hands on some
crystals of knowledge.

He defeated the arch enemy of a mighty karmic wyrm.
He adhered to the principles of the Cat Lord and thus rose to great fame.
He saved Khelavaster from certain death.
-Luckily, I randomly found an AoLS somewhere. It was "electrum amulet"
unidentified; usually those aren't worth picking up.

-I also generated the cute dog alive, so that I could use that lawful
boost to help me get to L+ after Gaab'baay's quests, but when I went
back to save the dog at level 18, he attacked an injured cat I was
trying to humanely dispose of. That's fine, my amulet of order had
me at L+ by level 20, and into every Adom game some rain must fall.

He ended his adventuring life in the palace of Andor Drakon.
9470 monsters perished under his attacks.
The following 37 artifacts were generated during his adventure:
the si
the dwarven rune axe "Rolf's Companion"
-I generated this just to feed it to the ratling. I always get more
SoCR than I need from other sources anyway.

the scythe of corruption "Moon Sickle"
-Ratling fodder.

the ring of the master cat
the golden gladius "Death's Sting"
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Water
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Air
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Fire
the Chaos Orb of Elemental Earth
the rune-covered long sword "Trusted One"
-Crowning gift, unused.

the lead-filled mace "Big Punch"
-Ratling fodder.

the rune-covered trident
the sword of Nonnak
the elemental gauntlets
the ring of the High Kings
the phial of Caladriel
-Ratling fodder.

the crown of science
the ancient mummy wrapping
the ankh
the hammer of the gods
-Uselessness. I thought shining silver bracers might make
an appearance, but I wasn't that lucky.

the Crown of Chaos
the black torc
-Ratling fodder.

the Medal of Chaos
the rune-covered club "Skullcrusher"
-Dropped in blue dragon caves.

the Chaos Orb of Elemental Mana
the black rune-covered dagger "Needle"
the rune-covered sling "Whirlwind"
-Precrowning. I thought it might make a decent ratling snack,
but decided to keep it around for firey situations.

the fine leather armor "Nature's Companion"
-Found in the casino. I used it after level 50, when the speed
bonus would no longer have a negative effect on xp.

the jet-black battle axe "Executor"
-Found in the casino. Even though I knew I wouldn't use it, I
bought it. I like rescuing all artifacts I come across.

the robes of resistance
-Found in darkforge, used until level 50.
the staff of the archmagi
-I never found this one. Then again, I don't pick up every
40 stone quarterstaff I come across. I wouldn't use it anyway.

the sapphire amulet "Preserver"
-I was very, very lucky to find this in a lesser vault in the
unremarkable dungeon. It sure beats my precrown.

the shining long spear "Soaker"
-Stolen from a gremlin! Too bad it's awful. Ratling fodder.

the Trident of the Red Rooster
-I gave some guy a crumpled up paper for this. Man did he get
ripped! Anyways, I wish you could get it soon enough in the game
to really enjoy it. I got to clear the mana temple and D:50 with it,
but that just isn't enough.

the weird tome
-I took a new approach to the library this time, which I thought
of on the spot. Here's my ingenious strategy: waste 2000 turns,
and then clear out the monsters. There's no monster generation
in the library while everyone is still standing on their books,
so the librarian is guaranteed to stay safe. I've lost him in
unpleasant ways before, so this just seemed like a better idea.

the rune-covered halberd "Wyrmlance"
-Dang! I never found this, and definitely would have used it
for two lesser vaults of "very experienced" ancient red dragons.
Chances are it was only generated late, when I stopped picking up
50 stone halberds. Speaking of vaults, this is my second game in a
row with zero greater vaults. I'm not bitter.

the axe of the minotaur emperor
-Some time I really should play a barbarian that uses this
exclusively. It would break my spear addiction.

He possessed the following intrinsics:
He was fire resistant.
He was poison resistant.
He was acid resistant.
He was lucky.
Fate smiled upon him (enhanced through an item).
He was doomed (gained through items).
He was cursed (gained through items).
He was petrification resistant (gained through items).
-Both the medal and crown of chaos give this intrinsic,
apparently. How redundant.

He was able to control teleportation.
-I was able to dispose of several blink dogs without losing
my crowning.

He was stun resistant (gained through an item).
He was resistant to death rays (enhanced through items).
-See that? Enhanced, not gained. I'm awesome.

He was shock resistant.
He was able to see invisible things (gained through items).
He was immune to shock attacks.
He was immune to fire attacks (gained through items).
He was immune to acidic attacks (gained through an item).
He was immune to ice attacks (gained through an item).
He was able to breathe water (gained through items).
He was able to resist confusion attacks (gained through an item).
He had the following talents: Affinity with Polemarms, Alert, Basher,
-Polemarms? Like schoolmarms? I didn't edit that, people. That's
how the flg spells it. Of course, Adom still has the best proofreading
in any freeware game, ever. Which just makes this stand out so much
more.

Careful, Defensive Fighter, Hardy, Immune to Pain, Iron Skin, Long Stride,
Mighty Strike, Miser, Mithril Skin, Powerful Strike, Quick, Sixth Sense,
Steel Skin, Tough Skin, Treasure Hunter.
He had a final speed score of 402 (final base speed: 138).
He was a messiah of Morodwyn.
He asked for 3 divine interventions.
-I prefer only praying for crownings/precrownings, but I knew that
a merchant would need some rescuing in the early game.

He was a holy champion of Order.

The following monsters were vanquished:
-It says up above that merely 9470 monsters were vanquished, and that
includes over 3000 scummed gremlins. That means I killed less than
6500 monsters in actual fights - I don't think I've ever been that
efficient. Challenge game idea: Win the game with minimum kills and
no companions. Anyways, *mostly snipped*

34 animated trees
-I initially got past the animated forest by mining my way around it,
but that still forces you to fight the trees that spawn in your shortcut.

16 annihilators
-One of these managed to get his fingers on my equipment once;
fortunately, he wasted his opportunity on my ammo.

1 banshee
-I got her to dispose of one of the two doppleganger kings that
appeared in this game. I was very proud of my creative use of the
environment.

4 blink dogs
-Don't tell my god. He'll get mad.

58 chaos warriors
-I found a room full of these in the rift. So much eternium!

38 chaos wizards
-I mowed these down with humanoid slaying ammo from afar. I don't
like dealing with extremely experienced chaos servants.

1 child
-First kill. Not a very lawful thing to do, I know. But hey, you
don't see me wearing a platinum girdle, do you? That's right.

1 doppleganger king
-Had to kill him in darkness. Nothing else seemed to work.

1 dwarven artificer
-Well I needed an anvil, and certainly didn't want to kill Glod.
I actually forced Glod into the ogre cave, where he still fixes
your gear but doesn't charge to use his forge. It's win/win.

2 ElDeR cHaOs GoDs
-No, not really.

5 greater molochs
-Mmm... experience...

20 harpies
-A harpy sacrificed one of my earlier attempted merchants
to her dark gods. Revenge was satisfying.

10 invisible stalkers
-I didn't actually use my RotMC until level 50, so most of these
were killed by accident.

1 multi-headed chaos dragon
-Scariest fight of the game, because I had to keep reusing the same
few dragon slaying quarrels, and because of a few dangerous missteps.

1 quickling bard
-Burning hands is so effective here that it's almost ironic.

1 ratling trader
-He refused to give me store credit.

155 zombies
-Random monster quest. Once in a long while, the RNG actually gives
me a good one.

Dunno, but I LOVE smithing. I've wished for the mining skill before if I don't get Hammerhead, so I can just kill glod.

The earliest I go on mining/smithing sprees is around level 20, latest 40, since corruption starts to make me eager to get done.

Besides, scrolls of protection/defense and magical writing sets aren't as common as gold.

Even with classes that don't start with mining or smithing, I find it to be worth buying smithing from Glod and building up a big pile of pickaxes for Glod to fix repeatedly. Smithing is easily trained by making ingots, because even if you "fail to extract metal from the ore" you still have the ore. Is that a bug or a feature? Either way, I exploit it. When you get smithing to 90+, you can easily make items that are far better than any you'll find naturally generated.

Even with all this preparation, though, I never mine out more than one level, and I'll probably just do one smithing session, mostly involving iron items: gauntlets of strength, bracers/crown of regeneration (I never found a crown of regen in this game). I might then also beef up a mithril girdle and a dragon scale mail to use up higher ingots.

Killing Glod isn't necessary. It's VERY easy to dispose of him humanely, if you have SLB's anyway. I've never tried without them. Anyways, keep walking around him and pushing him towards his door by changing places with him. When he's in his doorway, teleport to the other side of him and push him out of his shop. Or maybe you can just teleport him to begin with; I only thought of that possibility now. When he's out, lead him to any stairs and he'll follow you.

I don't think I've ever written a scroll. I've never needed to (and I like keeping my mana points).

As for Silfer's precrowning comment, I find that a single precrown really isn't hard to get. (The second one can be a huge drag.) A good precrown will help you in the early game when you get it, and a great precrown will help you for the entire game.

Yeah, a single precrown is EXTREMELY easy at level 8, especially if you find a lawful or chaotic altar in a good spot, like a hallway in a lawful's case.

I did a test the other week, and it was this:

Save, pray for precrown, then quit reload, and see what artifacts are generated, the results that I remembered were this:

Very Common:Bracers of War, Preserver, Serpent's Bite, and Scorched Spear, ring of immunity.

Common: Thunderstroke, Far Slayer, Staff of the Archmagi, Executor, Purifier.

Not Common: Ironfist, Hammerhead.

Rare:Sun's Messenger, Robes of Resistance, Crown of Leadership.

Of course this was from memory/some stuff written down, but overall, this may say some things:

If artifacts are generated upon game generation(which they are), then this means that all of the artifacts that I never got after over a hundred precrowns were going to be generated for that char, or that it is impossible to get some very powerful artifacts for precrowns, like Vanquisher for example.

I may do this test again, and actually make percentages and statistics, but my results should give a good idea of precrowns, I think.

Has anyone gotten any other artifacts for precrowns/postcrowns? Maybe you can get the other artifacts that I wasn't able to get for precrown for postcrownings....

I have gotten long sting too. And I've mabye gotten, but definately seen getting black tome described.

"Smithing is easily trained by making ingots, because even if you "fail to extract metal from the ore" you still have the ore. Is that a bug or a feature? "

This is a feature. I've once or twice, with very low skill and cursed ore, managed to get a message like "You fail to extract the ore, in addition you destroy the piece of iron ore".

This would fit with how it is in RL. If you TRY to get the Cu out of CuO, if you manage it, well then you get the Cu metal. If you fail, what else but CuO would you have? So you could try again. I'm not sure just why you need a hammer and an anvil to get the iron out of ore, though. I would do it with a furnace and some simple chemicals...
But I suppose mithril and adamantium and eternium are pretty dissimilar to earthly metals.

ANYWAY

Just closed gate with my priest winner. He is clearing up some things (gonna get the Trident of the Red Cock before I leave). So hes on his way to ID:87. And he just entered into BEST GREATER VAULT EVER contest.

Background:
The character had executor, serpents bite, wyrmlance and rune-covered trident and artifact crossbow (as in, needed no weapons when vault was found)
The character had a ring of weakness
The character had food preservation of 100.

Okay, and now guess what kind of vault and what was found inside:
Greater GIANT vault (gave me +35 str)
Artifacts: PRESERVER + BRACERS OF WAR! (+long sting, just in case I wanted a bug slayer...)

Any way to make it better?

It was all the way down on D:47, so I really got exactly what I needed at the time.

Thanks Soirana,I forgot about Black Tome and Long Sting to put down. both are fairly common.

I guess Sun's Messenger should be put in Uber-rare, I only got it once according to what I wrote.

Maybe it was a bug that I got it...

Protector and Whirlwind are common precrowns for me.

Molach: that is a very awesome greater vault. Not getting any greater vaults in a playthrough really annoys me, and I haven't gotten any in my last two games. Oh well. Also, long sting isn't a bug slayer, bugbiter is the only one.

Here's the full list of artifacts that can be received anywhere (vaults, stores, precrowning, surges of power, uselessness, and other random generation). This list is composed from my experience and other threads and manuals that I've read before:

Nature's Companion
Robes of Resistance
black tome of Alsophocus
bracers of war
Ironfist
crown of Leadership
Serpent's Bite
Wyrmlance
Scorched spear
Hammerhead
staff of the archmagi
Purifier
Soaker
Skullcrusher
Executor
hammer of the gods
Long Sting
Whirlwind
The Far Slayer
Thunderstroke
Preserver
Ring of Immunity
Protector

The following artifacts can only be received through crowning:

Shirt of the saints
Perion's mithril plate mail
boots of the divine messenger
cloak of Oman
Brannalbin's Cloak of Defense
gauntlets of eternal peace
Iron Crown of Havlor
ebony spear "Bugbiter"
mighty morning star "Grod"
Vanquisher
thin dagger "Cat's Claw"
black long sword "Kinslayer"
ancient claymore "Death's Blade"
rune covered long sword "Trusted One"
staff of the Wanderer
holy avenger "Justifier"
heavy cudgel "Black thumb"
Sun's Messenger
silvery arrow "True Aim"
Aylas Holy Scarf
intricate wooden shield "Nature's Friend"
silver key

Note that I've put Sun's Messenger in the second list, as the general consensus among Adomers has been that it's crowning-only. If you really can get it through a precrown, then it's extraordinarily rare.

It's very unlikely that you'll ever get to use most of the artifacts in the second list, because they have a very small niche of availability. For example: bugbiter (the game's only bug slayer) can only be given to rangers, and even rangers only have a 1 in 6 chance of getting it.

Sorry, I forgot about protector and whirlwind.

Though as I said before, maybe you can get some of the other artifacts only as 'post'crownings...but probably not.

I think that Thomas Biskup made it like this so that you wouldn't being able to scum precrowns, since in my opinion, the second list has a lot of very nice artifacts that I would be patient enough to go for 2 or 3 precrowns, if I knew I could get them.Vanquisher,Trusted One,both cloaks,Iron Crown, and Nature's Friend are very good artifacts.

Nature's friend is good? Are you kidding?

My monk winner was lucky enough to be crowned with the iron crown of Havlor, and my archer got boots of the divine messenger, but that's about it. I'd like the chance to use more of these.

There are some totally great artifacts in the first list as well. And a lot of crap in the other list. Vanquisher and Sun's messenger are the canditates for your hypothesis. And perhaps non-destructable cloaks. And mabye the iron crown, yes. All the rest is easily dispensed with, and I am pretty happy that many of them can NOT be generated naturally and therefore lower my chances for bracers of war/preserver or a humanoid slayer.

Trusted one is good? Are you kidding?

I've gotten it once, and it was like never used. I need weapon that deals damage, and this one just doesn't. No penetration, no slaying. It is good for early game, but I seldom have the luxury to get a crowning that early anyway, so two thumbs down for that. Resists? Bah. I can take care of that, gimme the power.

On your the bright side, I agree vanquisher is kinda good. Wish I'll see it sometime. That's gotta be the best weapon whatsoever. Even if it doesn't slay insects or plants or animals :). By the way, does it need to be a giant slayer? Since it is a humanoid slayer? Arent all giants also humanoids? Or do the slaying stack? Like double slaying = double slaying effect?

On your short list I would also add sun's messenger - that is very nice too. Undead slaying kinda situational.

And natures friend is not good because +6 DV means you only can get +18 DV with full shield skill. While my last game my char had a few +13DV shields, which gives me +35 DV (only have 11 shield skill, but I could get +39 DV with 13) This game is a lot more melee than elemental-damage focused to that DV difference is very significant.

Nature's Friend is king of crappiness. All I can say.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Even lust for glory (the +5, +5 shield that can't be generated in 1.1.1) is better than Nature's friend, because it has death ray, paralyzation and petrification resistence.
