WeLcOmE tO tHe third Molachian ADOM contest.
- the nightmare before christmas.

-Intro-
All was quiet in the village of Terinyo. The villagers had lived through a harsh fall, and a harsher still winter. The men of the village were walking around, trying to avoid the gaze of their elder, as if expecting him to send them upon a quest to certain death. Creatures of chaos, goblins, orcs and kobolds had begun to raid the village itself, and not just the outlying farms.

The powerful wizard Khelavaster who had pledged to look into and stop the chaotic forces had been away for a full year. And the proud, strong village carpenter who had left a month ago to challenge the nearest goblin warlord had still not returned. The Sheriff and the Druid of the village were strong in their own way, but each had other worries to deal with before seeking out the source of the invading monsters. Crime abounded the surrounding countryside, and there were mad animals, driven by some unnatural force, feeding on the villagers livestock.

As the holiday season grew near, there were many in the village who feared they would not live to see another spring.

But when the need is greatest, help is nearest. Somewhere, there are people who will rise to the challenge. People with power and the will to use it. People who we call heroes. People who will stop at nothing to save the day.

Sadly, it turns out that all such people are busy elsewhere, and we are stuck with Santas little helper to make all things right. Or wrong...

-the Contest-
The Challenge is as follows: All participants will play a male or female Gnome Merchant.

The character will be generated on christmas eve, 24th of december. (Participants can do it +/- a few days and set the computer clock accordingly if computer access is hard on the day. Do not start playing before 24th though)

This is a honorable challenge. You get one try. Take whichever birthsign you get, take the stats, take the starting items. And if you die, well note your score and submit your history of your deeds.

The goal is to score as high as possible, with some adjustments to reward more challenging play:

* Crowned champions of Chaos score higher than Balance/Order when winning.
* Dying ON the Chaos plane scores higher than regular victory.
* Ultimate victory score higher still, in this order: Chaos > Balance > Order.
* Regular Chaos God will score highest of all, on the condition that it gets submitted to the HOF.

Restoring dead charcters via save-scumming is not allowed. Otherwise backups in
case of computer failure are okay.

Challenge will end january 24th. Ish.

P.S the real objective is of course to have fun. And survive the first 4 encounters...

He lives! Starting talens: Alert, Hardy, Tough skin, Long stride. Havent moved yet. Got potions of cure poison for short-term survival. And potion of dex and str.

Nearly died to pit vipers, but managed to save carpenter. Got built up nicely with STR and eq, but then decided to do an ultra. Which meant I had to descend UD. Which meant I had to pass through SMC. I tried, but found only blanket, no stairs. And then a wererat boxed me in to death.

Got Jharod and puppy quest, generated SMC, tried visiting black market but changed my mind once an outlaw and outlaw leader started chasing me.

Went to ID to gain some levels, got rabid dog as my first kill and scummed ID:1 till level 8. Had some close calls (avoiding *anything* remotely dangerous. Off the top of my head, that means a ghul, two fire beetles, two wild cats (though i killed one by accident afterwards), and some of those different colored 'g's (goblin chieftains and stuff). Closest two calls were against a gelatinous cube that I could barely outrun to throw coins at it, and a large spider that poisoned me and stuck me between itself and a rat (potion of invisibility + cure poison got me out of that one). Got a nice orcish spear and a reasonable shield.

Having two potions of invisibility in my backpack really is a comfort :)

Update: decided to to village dungeon to get healing soon, but the way was barred by water, so I went to the puppy cave and got killed on the first level by a kobold chieftain (it started berserking. Throwing a potion of blindness didnt stop him from killing me).

This character was actually quite fun to play. I guess if I play as carefully as I did this one with my other non-melee characters, I could get really far :P

Character:This guy got wand as birthsign (eh, ok) and scrolls. Went to SMC to generate guys, then went to ID. Leveled up there, then did VD. Got a scare with a tension room of gargoyles, had to pray twice. Found altar. Then went to ID to train some more and get a scroll of Magic Mapping for SMC. Found some pit vipers... got poisoned... died. 8377 points and level 10. Ick.

History so far: Gambling at Santas Casino, waiting for the moment where he can obey his lord and master (the anti-clause, a.k.a Andor 'Claws' Drakon) and bring doom upon the world.

Current location: Standing in terinyo talking to the sheriff.

started with 5 talents, Alert, healthy, longstride, quick and very quick.
Low str 9, learning 17, mana 22, all other stats around 12-15.

First goal is to level up in the pcaves and the id, its a long hard road to be an evil munchkin, but Mr Bo Jangles has the evil inner drive to succeed.





Mr Bo Jangles

First kill = beggar, a hint of the evil inside of him. Went straight to smc, found the stairs but not the blankey, so went back to *holeinthewall* and sold items, finding nothing interesting he went over to the Vd, where he found an altar which he'd come back to later. After saving yriggs (didnt want stat drain from alternative healing quest) Mr Bo Jangles Identified all of his belongings and found bracers of toughness and a Hand Axe of Mayhem, switching from his trusty +3, 1d6+2 shortsword, Mr Bo Jangles was now even more formidable in melee, rarely having to fall back on his collection of wands.
After learning the ways of the thieves, Mr Bo Jangles travelled deep (relatively) into the Pcaves - where he found on lvl full of herbs, as
well as a spellshop> which had some gooduns, summon, heal, atlas and such like. Used the herbs to good effect - sickness +morgia + marelon.
The lower level was full of gnolls and hyenas, but the Mayhem handaxe took good care of them.
Mr Bo Jangles is currently lvl 13, and is letting the ants dig the 2nd lvl away before running around pivking up jewels and gems before trying
for a precrown. Current hp 106, pp 52. str16 (started on 9) le17, wi16, dx17, to18, ch10, ap12, mana22, pe14.
Just checked items, not many good gems, but did find an AMULET OF LIFESAVING!!!! YEAH!
After much sacrificing (to the god of Balance, ha the fool knows nothing of what i plot...) Bo Jangles was precrowned with the Hammerhead Pickaxe. pretty cool.

After travelling through the Ud (nothing interesting, not even an exciting lvl, Bo Jangles arrived at the Hmvillage, again, not very interesting. stopping off at the barbarians glade, Bo Jangles once again went through his herb routine, then headed into the Pyramid (lvl15), the top lvl was full of tougher monsters than expected, so used darkness and killed of minions, the fire bolted Rhetep to teeny fragments. also found a cloak of invisibility in loot.

Heading quickly down to Dwarftown, Mr Bo Jangles found two exciting vaults, 73 cooked lizards, 3 lvls with herbs. The conversation with Thundar went like so:

Bo Jangle: Yo, i heard theres a portal down there...
Thundarr: Aye, but its closed to save foolish adventurers like yourself.
BJ: Oh. hmm, could i perhaps prove myself somehow worthy to your starnge dwarven ways?
T: Aye, a vile necromancer has defiled the dwarven graveyard. so stab him for me.
BJ: just once?
T: Nay, till hes dead.
BJ: ok agreed, now do you have any other unrelated quests?
T: aye, I want you to kill a Necromancer to prove your valor.
BJ: Oh sweet jebus, where will i find one of those?
T: I dunno, but youd better get searching.

After killing a random necromancer, somewhere in the CoChaos, Bo Jangles went back to thundar.

BJ: Yo, i killed this necro.
T: sweet, ill tell what all your stuff is.
BJ: Yay seven leauge boots!, im off to kill that other necromancer.
T: Aye! prove you Valour!
BJ: No, i just proved my valor, now im proving my worthyness
T: I thought youd proved your worthyness, but had yet to prove your valour?
BJ: No, no, I have yet to prove my worthyness by killing the Vile Necromancer, i just proved my *valour* by killing a normal non-vile necromancer a few dungeons away, although i suppose all Necros are Vile due to the work that they do, SO i guess you could say that ive proved my valour by killing a vile necromancer, but still have yet to prove my
*worthyness* by killing a specific Vile necromancer.
T: Argh my brain!
BJ: Any other quests?
T: *mimblewimble* cross the ani-forest and tell me whats on the other side.
BJ: *walking off* dude must be short on quests...

wow. never had a mercant make it past lvl 7, way to go Mr Bo Jangles.

Went to Terinyo, got quests, bought food
First kill: Bandit in Llawenilothel
Found a leather armor in SmC, tried it on to see if it was better than mine--Cursed , of sloth!
Went up and down in the ID, hoping for scroll of uncursing.
Very close call with a dwarf. Tried to confuse him with Ventriloquism, used 1 prayer, finally got away because Coward + Low HP made me fast.
The exact same thing happened with a fire beetle, but this time I wasn't so lucky--even on Coward with 1 HP left, the thing still caught me.

Went to Terinyo and decide to help a little girl find her puppy for christmas. Went to the small cave and found in the first room a milkty pool.

'Should I drink from it? He thought.

'Of course I will!' the first sip tasted wierd but unpreturbed he continued feeling more different after every sip.

From Pool: Gained corruption, death ray resist, fire resist, Sleep resist, shock resist (I think)

Since he was in room with no disernable doors, he drank poitions to pass the time.

Finally he found the door but was hit by an explosion when it was opened and lost his hat.

Wandered around and opened a door. Jasper was met by a gang of howling orcs. Quickly he clubbed the first orc he saw (First Kill: Orc)

Jasper then ran away as the large orcs chased him. Had to pray for healing but now that's reached it's limits have reached level 3.

New Talent:Hardy

Jasper gripped his club tightly as the angry Orcs surrounded him. He wouldn't go down without a fight uttering a warcry he leap and was still smashing skulls when an large orc finally stabbed him through the chest.

And thus Jasper the gnome died with the blood of his enemies mingling with his own.

(Awww! I died!)

okay.. My char get killed by the dwarven priest in the dwarftown. I didnt succesfully mispatch him and he got me down. damn he was tough. It was a surprise that when you convert the altar with the priest next to you he turns against you :/ Well, learning all the time :). i got even one surge of power, black tome blahblahblah. it has to be the suckiest artifact of all the time.

Character story:
Quite a good start: PoEX. The first alchemy recipe was booze, not good yet. (Though it's easy to make: Water+demon daisy) His +0, +4 Leather Armor, and +0, +3 Leather Cap, and later a +0, +3 metal girdle, plus Tough and Iron Skin allowed him to survive blows from stronger monsters as well. The Village Dungeon was nothing difficult for him, as he did not even flinch from Yrrigs' blows as he lured the carpenter to Jharod. No altar yet. The next step was the CoC. Bought cooked lizards, alright. Gained a few pieces of gold in the Arena, but I ain't taking risks yet. Next level! A trap room took out his Gnomish Boots. Nothing good. He couldn't find the stairs... a wild cat and a yellow ooze ambushed him in a corridor. He tried to whack the ooze, but it just regenerated. Christmas luck my arse! So he whacked the ecat, and fled. He lured the ooze in the trap room's acid trap and it took the monster out. But, in his infinite wisdom, earlier Acheron ate a blessed stomafillia. Now he couldn't eat an alraunia antidote because of it! Nor pepper petals to heal! The PoEx was good only for one round, and the poison was very severe. He tried to use some spenseweeds. And what was his christmas luck? Earlier in the dark, he used a CURSED GODDAMN TORCH! He couldn't use the spenseweed! He perished fighting a hell hound. It was promising though. I'm planning to off-challenge continue him from a backup. This is my challenge status though.
The rest of the things:
Talents: Treasure Hunter+prereqs, Hardy, Tough and Iron skin.
Final stats: St 12, Le 11, Wi 13, Dx 15, To 18, Ch 14, Ap 11, Ma 17, Pe 5

Jimmy McJim, born under the star sign of the Falcon. Random attributes, and with 4 talents to start with. Chose Alert, Miser and Treasure Hunter, before settling on Long Stride as my fourth. His specialisation is in wands (WOOHOO!), and he entered the Draklor Chain with 2 wands of fire, a wand of paralyzation, a wand of light and a wand of door creation. Starting stats were ok. Str:12 Le:15 Wi:13 Dx:14 To:12 Ch:12 Ap:10 Ma:16 :Pe15. Got a crap sword to start with, but these things happen.

Got the three quests in Terinyo (Dog, Sheriff and healer). Neglected to even go in the SMC. I ain’t falling for that trick. Went off to the ID to level up a few times. First kill was an orc, so that was pretty easy for courage later, although I doubt I’d get that far. Killed some random monsters, found a wand of digging, and then got to level 4 without much going on. Decided to go and find Kranach and kick his ass.

Found Kranach easily enough, got turned into a mobile pincushion, but still managed to survive. Lined up all the raiders and went medieval on their behinds with my wands of fire. Wiped them all out, got a bow and a load of arrows, advanced to level 6, took very quick as my talent, and went to collect my reward.

3000 gold richer, I went straight to the hole in the wall, and looked around the shop. Had to use my wands of fire to get past some muggers and an outlaw that beat me up. Shop was very poor, bar a mithril broadsword which I purchased.

Went to the ID to get some training in bows. Had a very close call. A lizard walked towards me and stood on a fireball trap. Too me down to 5 HP, so I had to make a run for it. Regained to HP, got to level 7, beefed up my pick pocket skill and also my first aid. Ran out of food so went to restock. Then shuffled off to the village dungeon to find the carpenter

Managed to get to Jharod easily enough, the best thing I had pickpocketed up till then was a hat. Awesome. Got a couple more wands, and carried on going down to find the wacko. Had a scare when a blink dog appeared, but I managed to kill it in 2 shots which was nice. Can’t deal with a load of them right now. Got down to Lv 7. Found Yriggs, but also found a necromancer which summoned stuff like crazy and an ogre in the same room. Wasn’t happy. Killed some skeletons, Yriggs came to the front, and I ran like hell to Jharod. Cured him, got healing, and I went back down to kick some undead ass. Killed a load of em, had to pray though when a ghul decided to paralyze me. Ran away at level 9. Got back to Terinyo. Told Rynt the good news, went to the outlaw motel and became a member of the thieves guild.

I didn’t feel up to the puppy dog just yet. Bows were at level 5, thought I might need a load more arrows, and some more sword skills. Thought level 11 or so might be ok. Went back to the ID to lark around. I really wanted some potions of booze and some arrows.

Got bored and went to get the dead dog. Found an undead vault at the bottom and cleaned it out. Close call in the caverns above with a hill orc chieftan and a flesh golem. Trapped in a corridor, I was getting killed rather fast. Remembered wand of digging and used it. Ran to the stairs and got the hell out of their. Also had another close shave in the vault when I put on a girdle of carrying, and it turned out to be cursed. Had to drop pretty much everything. But on the plus side, found an altar down there. Woop. Achieved level 12. Gave the corpse to the tiny girl. Completed the first 3 quests.

Needed a scroll of identify to look at my stuff, and also wanted to bless my scroll of magic mapping (from outlaw shop), so it would make the downstairs route a lot easier. Went into the SMC after blessing the scroll and read it. Then an orc attacked me. Then I died. I was not amused. After dying I found a blessed potion of gain attributes, a short bow of accuracy, potion of mana and some good swords in my inventory. The stairs in the SMC were miles away anyway, so it would have been very hard to get there.

Damn it.

Gnettle, my unicorn born, wand specialist got the blanket from the small cave, skipped the Kranach quest (because I forgot I was a wand specialist), pre-crowned with the hammer of the gods (which I'm using as a missile), learned healing, and is now up to level 11. Started with long stride, healthy and hardy. Got the quests from Terinyo, trained in the ID until level 4, finding an okay long sword and a leather armor with 5 PV. Hunted down Kranach and got my reward. Headed to the Puppy Cave and on level 3, just like Silfir above me, I was surrounded and eventually killed by blink dogs. Gah!

Oh well. Didn't expect to get far.

History so far:
Just started, killed a bandit, checking out the stock in the Bandit town shop. About to check out the SMC. Already had to pray once after a cutpurse got some lucky hits in. Eep.

Went to SMC, got the blanket - luckily in the same room as the staircase. Decided to descend through the UD. Had a few hairy encounters on level 1 - a fire vortex got me down to 2 HP, then a ghost bat started chasing me. Went down a level, was trapped in a small room with a big mean ol' minotaur. Managed to kick open a random bit of wall to reveal a secret door, though, and escaped down to level 3. Where I found a green hag. Who killed me. Alas. Lesson of the day being, I won't play a character without the healing skill again :D

I rolled up a gnomish merchant and gave it whirl a couple of weeks ago when the contest was announced, to see what merchants were like, assuming I could still enter the entirely random character (my preferred contest idea) or random gnome contests, and he died from a mugger or something in Llawehtnieloh. As those other two ideas apparently aren't options (which is a shame), I decided to give it another go, knowing the full rules, and such. Probably didn't count, but what the hell, it's festive.
Knowledge is chimera, for beyond it ever lies other knowledge, and the incompleteness of what is known renders the knowing false.

Well, it went pretty much like I expected. Tried to go get healing first, and on VD:3 got hit by a pit viper. Tried to run to the healer, but it took me 2 prayers. So ok, I'm still alive and descent to VD:6. Still no shield or other stuff nowhere to be found. All I managed to find was a tension room full of large orcs. Again, I ran.
Went to ID in hopes of a decent shield, and whee. I found a blink dog from ID:1 (managed to escape) and another from ID:2 (that I had to kill). ID:3 had a tension room with random foos. Once again, I ran. And I ran into an owlbear that hit me once, hit me twice and I bled to death.

Christmas luck my arse. :)
