Finally beat this game for the first time(non save-scum)!!!
Basldkasndon L39 Hurthling Monk

Here’s my story:

Chapter 1 - The potion of cure poison

This character from the beginning was looking like it was going to have the lifespan of a mosquito. I couldn't have been more then level 5 at this time. Just had a tough battle which brought me down to about 13 hps. Hit a viper pit, got hit, poisoned with no resistance 6 hp remaining. Threw some water at my monitor, but, the vipers were still alive. Now if there is one I've learned, it is to pause at these moments, go to the bathroom and think about it for a bit. So I look at my inventory, turns out I had a potion of cure poison! I Identified one at the shop in Lawnilothehl and must of picked one up at some dungeon level. I drank it, got cured, went to coward for the coward/speed bonus and fled easily. I’ve honestly never used a potion of cure poison until this time and it saved my life.

Chapter 2 - The healing potion

After discovering an altar and a herb patch with stommas I desperately wanted to get herbalism to get started on pre-crownings (I got two). I was level 7 at the time descended to VD7 and found a bunch of cats. I decided to start some cat and mouse tactics to tame the cats. I found a wererat on VD6 which gave me a bunch of rat corpses. I used them to tame one cat, went back to the wererat for a second round… unfortunately I got sick at this time. Still no herbalism, with no prayers left my options were limited. Again, looked at my inventory, two sandy potions. I thought to myself, “What the heck? Might as well drink one.” Turns out it was a potion of healing, the first one must have been cursed as I was still sick. I drank the second one and my sickness was cured. Kethrax was defeated shortly after.

Chapter 3 – The Short Bow
(This is the time where you scroll down and look at the short-bow I was using for most of the game)
I went to the puppy cave, and was encountered by a monstrous foe. Yes, you guessed it a florescent green kobold. It was a long fought battle but, eventually the kobold fell at the wrath of my recently discovered (+1, 0) Hand Axe. Looking through the loot, I was amazed at what I found, an artifact short bow “Two-Hit” (+2, 0). I equipped it and lucky for me it was uncursed as well!!! I later found a short bow with +1 damage and was tempted to replace it but, my bond with Two-Hit was everlasting and remained equipped for most of the game.
Nerf Two-Hit.

Chapter 4 - The wand of wishing

I picked up a wand of wishing sometime before the Pyramid. I’m convinced I got it after running back through the Dwarven Halls during Thrundarr’s second quest.

Once this wand was Identified, I paused in shock for 20 seconds then started to scream uncontrollably. I have never seen a wand of wishing before and this one had four charges!!!

I used my wishes on:
- Amulet of Life Saving
- rings of weakness
- fletchery
- fletchery sets

Chapter 7 - Vaarn (chapters 5-6 were pretty boring so I'll ommit them)

I was nervous approaching Vaarn as my two hurthling brothers recently got their A$$ handed to them by Vaarn (two 30+ Bards)
This time I was much better prepared with enhanced Death Resistance, Confusion Resistance, amulet of light, humanoid slaying ammo and acid attacks.

The battle started in his office, I exchanged acid bolts for his icy bolts. This battle wasn’t going anywhere fast so I lured him towards the < in case I needed to flee. I equipped some humanoid slaying ammo in “Two-hit” and started to fire away rapidly. Varn fell after 11 shots. I was pumped!!! Could have been even longer if I only had a +1 short bow.
Nerf “Two-hit”!!!

Chapter 8 – The end

I was really nervous going forward but, but excited as well. I’ve never been this far as I don’t save-scum. D48 was a joke, D49 got Purifier. D50, I used a monster creation, door creation strategy and teleported away for victory. I left the chain with my head held high with a long awaited ADOM victory!!!!

Potions of healing cure sickness? That's news to me. I guess I don't have to bother with curaria mancox anymore.

The first one didn't although I didn't have them ID'd at the time. Given they weren't stacked it could of been a series of combinations(cursed/uncursed/blessed). Either way it saved my butt!

An uncursed potion of healing has about a 1 in 4 chance of healing sickness I think, whereas blessed is guarunteed. Always remember your potions of healing when sick - they can be a lifesaver.

Why do I only see four wishes there? Didn't you have a wand of wishing with four charges?

You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.

Congrats! Though, I believe the wish for fletchery and sets was useless. Plus, monks do loads of damage without weapons, seems like you played him as a fighter. Nice. Also, why didn't you level up more? There should have been more places to visit, and some are very fun.

To answer your questions:
I got pre-crowned with Executor (or whatever it is) at level 9. At that time I basically killed 99% of the monsters to date with thrown rocks. I was having troubles keeping un-burdended with my halfling strength for melee combat so I equipped my pre-crowning gift and basically steam-rolled everything up until about lvl 16.

I really didn't focus on one skill for the entire game. He was really a jack-of-all trades character. Found a book shop so I used spells quite a bit too as well. Bows were more towards the end of the game to train up to kill Vaarn.

The main reason why I didn't level up more is because I didn't have too. I always dived right after ToEF and died where my character died. Gradually I got futhur and futhur until I eventually beat everyone :)

Yes, Fletchery and Fletchery sets were a waste. I really had no idea what to wish for. I had 18 humanoid slaying atm, and always had lots of problems with Vaarn so I focused on some way of killing Vaarn thus a means of training bows. (that was my thought process). In hindsight, they probably could of been better spent.

Wow. Congrats.
At the moment, to me, the idea that someone could actually complete this game seems.. preposterous. Ridiculous. I've never got far past rescuing the carpenter. 90% of my deaths are due to trapped doors, how do you deal with them if you don't have disarm trap skill?

1. If you are hurt, don,t kick it up just yet. Wait till you have enough HPs to survive.

2. Try not to stand directly in front of it when you kick, if possible

3. Try to find another way first

4. Dig around it

5. Unlock the door with a key

6. Use a spell

7. GET the disarm trap skill

8. Use something real heavy to bash the door in from a dirstance.

1-3 are always worth trying. Especially nr. 1.
4-8 are more long-term goals, as you need stuff for it.

Hendar23, are you aware trapped doors can be identified most of the time?

Door trap spoiler, dont read unless...

Spoiler

Trying to open a locked door there will be a message like "The door wont budge." If the door is trapped it says "The door wont budge at all". Occasionaly a door explodes/crashes/whatever with the first touch, but most of the time you'll get the warning.

One of my best characters was a hurthling archer. She got the rune covered sling Whirlwind and tore it up. Level 25, just cleared the ToEF, had +130 bonus to hit, I got overconfident. Figured I'd try my luck against the giant water dragon. I figured wrong, and died in one round after my rock missed. Ah, Samantha, ye will be missed.

Congrats on your victory to the OP
