Well, I died, but you might still find this interesting.

My Adom play has fallen into certain ruts. Successful and enjoyable ruts, yes,
but ruts all the same. Every character I play primarily uses melee, polearms
and shields specifically. I train bows and crossbows up to level 7 or 8, and
try to acquire magic abilities for utility spells - mainly teleport. Offensive
magic really never makes up a significant part of my play, aside from the bug
temple when I decide to clear it, and *maybe* in the mana temple and D:50. So,
I started to consider using more magic in my games. But, how could I enforce
this change, and avoid my old ruts? By playing a true-berserking wizard!

True-berserking essentially means leaving your tactics on berserk for the
entire game, and also staying half-naked. Specifically, you can only wear
amulets, weapons, shields, rings, bracers, missile weapons/ammo and tools.
If you equip any additional items you lose the true-berserking bonus of
roughly 10 to-hit and damage. Every time you walk into an npc you get the
message "You lust for blood!" and you attack it, including non-hostile npcs in
towns; naturally, you have to be extremely careful where you step. You get an
additional 2 hit and damage for fighting without a shield, but I decided to
retain some sanity and use shields to my heart's content. Also, you can keep
all the properties of true-berserking while wearing body armor "of rage", so I
was madly hunting for this suffix. This created interesting situations later
on in the game: If I found "clothes [40s]" lying on top of "worn boots [30s]",
I would pick up the clothes and identify them while leaving the boots on the
ground. No boots are allowed!

I decided to play orcish wizards because of their find weakness and mining
skills and their hardier constitution. Mining is an advantage because I still
planned to smith a good shield and a set of bracers when I had the chance -
every possible point of DV and PV could save my life. After sending roughly
twenty of these hapless characters to their very, very premature deaths, I had
learned enough to actually keep one of these characters in one piece. Of course,
all my learning still couldn't save me from random wilderness encounters;
if you can't evade barbarians when your DV/PV is 3/0, you're dead and
there's nothing you can do about it. These early characters were subject to
the indisputable discretion of the RNG.

Finally, a wizard actually survived. This one was born in Candle; I didn't
scum for Candle, but I should have - healing is paramount. I took the druid
and puppy quests, and successfully retrieved the waterproof blanket. You may
think that's a foolish thing to do with this character, but I usually true-
berserk in that cave anyway so this is no new challenge. I made my way to the
thief town, sold items, got trained in pickpocketing, and then did something I
never do: trained in the ID. To get my requisite pickpockets I was forced to
take some damage from every monster, but fortunately I healed quickly. I was
lucky enough to find an amulet of protection +4 (which got damaged to +3, I
didn't know that was possible) and a ring of protection +3 (which was soon
melted), and I got some basic knowledge in common spells. I also started
collecting small shields, as the only way to get shield marks while on berserk
tactics is by throwing the shields as missiles! I did a lot of that to get
as much DV as possible. When I was done in there I cleared the druid dungeon,
puppy cave and UD. I forced myself to empty each dungeon in one trip, as
I knew I would have no spare game time (because I couldn't use SLB's). I was
still mainly using melee, as a true berserking wizard can dispatch any early
monster - even Keethrax - if he has a little bit of armor. Luckily I had
already found a blink dog corpse in the SMC and had the teleport spell, so
I always had an escape plan. When I reached the HMV I quickly zapped a wand
of monster detection, and fortunately there was no stone giant lord. That
would have been next to impossible to destroy in my state.

I talked to the old barbarian, and made my way through the CoC. The average
monster I found was still very weak, so my lack of armor was easily countered
by my powerful attack and fast healing. However, a couple other difficulties
arose. One reason I usually stray away from heavy magic use is that a bolt
fired down a hallway could easily hit a cat out of your LOS. Even on this
character I was still very careful to avoid killing felines; usually I took
the simple choice of teleporting them away. However, I have a bad habit of
walking through doors too quickly after opening them... and a cat happened to
be behind door number one. I had been counting on the RotMC to help me get
through this challenge, and I was also concerned about how I could possibly
kill the cat lord on this character. I decided to cross that bridge when I
came to it.

The other difficulty was precrowning. Before dwarftown I had only generated
one altar, neutral, on level 2 of a dungeon near Terinyo, so I killed some
time with an amulet of order so I could generate a lawful altar. I found a
whip, which helped - my herb training hadn't kicked in yet, so I could still
lower my PV to 0. However, despite my best efforts, I couldn't reach extremely
close with this new lawful diety. I had only generated two artifacts (that I
knew of) and was level 16, but all the money I could scrape together
(including the money from the arena's first 19 fights) and all the stomafillia
I could harvest wasn't enough for a precrowning. I was getting dangerously
close to level 17, so I gave up the chance of a precrown and cleared the
pyramid. I already had the black torc in my backpack, but I thought the Ankh
might still be useful.

I finished the dwarf's quests, explored the CoC down to Khelevastar, went to
the gremlin cave and grabbed a fluff ball and the phial as quickly as possible.
I travelled east, and decided to clear the assassin's lair for the heck of it.
It's a good thing I did, because I was extraordinarily lucky and found Preserver!
I cleared the dwarven graveyard, and proceeded with gremlin scumming there.
I hope you don't begrudge my scumming; it's necessary on a risky character
like this. I couldn't last as long as I usually do against the increasingly-
strong gremlins, but I still got a RoDS, an AoLS, and a ring of weakness. I
spent the wish on food preservation, which could be very useful when combined
with the ring. I now had spare carrot juice, so I raised my perception
significantly with *three* carrot juice rooms I had found in the first
dungeons. I saved Khelevastar, and dove down to the wall of fire.

It started to get harder here, but still nothing was insurmountable. I took
a lot of damage and more corruption than usual in the water temple, but fire
bolt defeated most of the watery denizens, and slow monster was effective on
the snake. I deposited the snake's carcass in Waldenbrook's shop, and went
exploring. Darkforge was very easy to clear with lightning ball, and I killed
Kherab for his anvil. The TotHK was routine. While I was in that area, at
roughly level 23, I already had trained up to 100 climbing and stealth, so I
felt ready to tackle the rift. The library is where I really started to use
magic; many ancient dragons fell to my magic missiles. It was nice to fill in
all the gaps in my spell list, but reading took up a lot more precious game
time. The bottom of the rift actually had a second surge of power (the first
being Preserver) but it turned out to be the black tome. I like building a
treasure trove of artifacts, but Alsophocus' writing doesn't get good critical
reviews. I left it on the ground where I found it.

I also tackled the minotaur maze, since I was in the area. However, I'm pretty
sure I saw every - single - level - before I found the correct path to level 7.
Due to my stubbornness, I used all my scrolls of magic mapping, all my writing
sets to make more scrolls of magic mapping, all my scrolls of power to fuel
the magic mapping spell... yes, stupid choices, I know, but I usually never
use writing sets or scrolls of power anyway, and I didn't need to write more
SoCR. Finally, I was rewarded with my potion of strength and two PoCC. My
potion of youth recipe required strength, and I had some early aging to remove.

I moved on to the ToEF, and found that my sparse set of armor was nearly all
fireproof already; not being allowed to wear those pesky SLB's and cloaks
of protection really helps. Ice bolt took care of fire giant kings, and
ice ball made very short work of the top level. I sold the wyrm's carcass to
Waldenbrook again. I decided to tackle the last source of guaranteed SoCR:
the bug temple! Yes, that's risky with no DV, but magic missile and acid ball
were successful in keeping the bugs at a fair distance. There was one turn
where I thought I had done myself in for good, but fortunately acid ball only
took one turn to kill three killer bugs. My willpower was 48 already at this
point, with preserver and the water orb.

With all that completed, I did some smelting in the hopes of training smithing
to 100 at some point, and continued the dive down the CoC. The Casino didn't
have any exciting new artifacts for me. The bunny master was quickly dispatched.
One of the first major annoyances was a *large* threaten room full of black
unicorns. I couldn't handle being surrounded by more than two of these, so
acid ball made very slow progress. It took a long time, and both of my new
scrolls of power, but I managed to kill the lot of them. I got three of their
corpses and cooked them, as I'm pretty sure they can be traded for PoCC.
Finally, I knew what I was coming up against... the cat lord.

When I got his characteristic level message, I magic-mapped the level, and
zapped monster detection, so I found that he was on the other end of a long
hallway - exactly what I was hoping for! My 12 winged quarrels of slaying were
blessed and loaded, and I let hell loose down the long passage... only three
hit. That failing, with the cat lord moderately injured, I attempted some
magic missiles, which were unerringly shrugged off. With the cat in immediate
proximity, I attempted slow monster, which was ignored entirely. I braced
myself... and received surprisingly little damage! It looked like I'd be able
to actually succeed in this fight, by casting acid ball repeatedly and
drinking a Potion of Extra Healing every 2-3 turns.

After I had cast two acid balls and drank one potion, the cat lord did over
400 damage in one turn.

So, what could I have done differently? I didn't want to speed myself up if
it could be avoided, as that would lower the experience I'd get for killing
the cat. However, slow monster would probably have had the same effect on xp,
so there's no reason I couldn't have drank my potions of boost speed, and
possibly have wished for speed with a second RoDS I found later on. I could
have used my scrolls of protection and defense on my current equipment instead
of waiting for a high smithing skill or body armor of rage. Maybe potions of
confusion and blindness would work on him, maybe wands of paralyzation, or
stun ray with high effectivity. I need to research these things. Will I try
this challenge again? Maybe, time will tell.

-I keep all the rings I find so that I can dip piles in potions of
exchange, but lately I haven't actually wanted to dip any. It's
ridiculous to let so much ride on the RNG; a game with 20 wishes
is hugely different than a game with 2. And if I can win the game
with 2 wishes, I shouldn't cheapen the win by trying to get 20.

For your aborted precrown, why didn't you sac the black torc?That could've gotten your piety higher, artifacts have good value,especially moonsickle.Also you have some boost potions, I find it good for situations like the cat lord to always be paranoid, if you're the slightest bit unsure. You have a wand of poison, would've helped, and the wands of paralyzation+webs would've helped a ton. Oh, and never underestimate ventriloquism,if a char has it, cats should never be killed, unless carelessness occurs, which happens to everyone.You could've used it on cat lord too.

Incredible char though, I personally don't like such restrictions unless it's a competition.

I was keeping the black torc for the 10 speed so I could travel and smith faster. I was also very afraid of sacrificing the torc and then still being only very close.

Webbing works too, eh? I generally assume webs and status-affecting stuff won't work, so I never try to use them when they really will help. That's the problem. Also, I've never used/trained ventriloquism. My skill advances are usually in short supply anyway. Ultimately, I should have been more paranoid like you said.

that would be extreme.
i'd say at least no offensive magic.
possibly no magic use on monsters.you would still have teleport and darkness. web is marginal, i could talk myself that they walking into some previously created webs is not my problem.

in general you can fight like teleporting archer. some temples still could be hard, especially earth.

i would also think high speed is essential.

I'd still give Some Guy some credit, seems like a hard challenge.Also, on precrowns, and crownings(my drakish healer had this happen) I've gotten all on only very close, which is strange. So if you spent as much time as you stated, you probably had enough piety.

I always use paralyzation on the cat lord as he is a pain to kill any other way.

Yeah, paralysation is pretty much necessary for cat lord. Also, rather importantly you had plenty of humanoid slaying ammo - these work very well on the cat lord.

Interesting challenge, and very very hard. Well done on getting so far, and hopefully on future attempts you can avoid killing kitties.

I've never fought the Cat Lord without humanoid slaying ammo. It's just near impossible to do any other way.

Spellcasters will have trouble doing that, but then spellcasters should be able to evade cats easily.

I just mele'd him after paralyzation. No slaying ammo, saved most of that for Varrn or whoever else I would've needed to kill with it. With my gnomish elementalist I will probably scorch him to death with my high-effectivity burning hands spell).

So humanoid slaying ammo does work on him? Weird, I thought he was a big cat, more or less. Maybe I misunderstood his description. I'll remember to use that and wands of paralyzation in the future. (Though I'd prefer to never even kill another cat.)

Speaking of slaying ammo, does all slaying ammo do more damage when blessed, or does that only apply to demons and undead? (Since blessed weapons damage them more anyway.)

I'm not up to trying this yet, but a true berserking challenge without offensive magic is certainly possible, even with a wizard. I would try that challenge with an archer, as I think they'd stand the best chance out of everybody.

Well, I watched this demo once, and it showed an archer going against the emperor moloch, once it showed the archer going against the EM with blessed demon slaying ammo, the other time with uncursed. It took like 3x as much uncursed to kill the EM,compared to the blessed, so I'd be safe with blessed, and i poison my ammo too.

EM is daemon so blessed should work on him better.
poisoning slaying ammo gives extra problems with them falling into couple of heaps. imho, no bonus is not that important.

I think that if you dip ammo into potions of confusion, they should confuse, and with potions of blindness too.

Blessed ammo only does extra damage against undead and demons. However I often bless them anyway because it makes the ammo less likely to break, so you can recover them after.
