I restarted this thread - because people didn't notice the question.

I thought (+1, +1) was the maximum for (Hit, Damage)

NOT [PV, DV] - I know how high that can go.

Then I found eternium cap (+3, +3) [+0, +4]

+3 to hit / +3 to damage

(How can a hat help you hit an enemy? It's a hat! I'm not getting THAT close that I can smack the -foo- with it - I'm using two-handed weapons.)

What is the maximum (to hit, to damage)for armor?

(+4, +4)?
(+5, +5)?
(+20, +20)?

Limited only by luck of the drop?

Luck, I imagine, though it would be nice if scrolls of increase melee damage/accuracy worked on armor.

Yeah, it's a shame that those stats can't be improved through smithing or scrolls. By the way, that's (melee hit, missile hit).

+3 for each sounds right for the maximum normal variation. I'm not sure if -3 is also possible, but I know that negative numbers are possible to some degree.

I'm fairly sure that the hit modifiers of certain other items are fixed, but I'm not positive. I can't remember ever seeing gauntlets of peace that weren't (-15, -15), or archery gloves that weren't (+0, +4), etc.

I re-read the manual and it doesn't mention it - that I noticed.

Or, if you find a helmet that's (+1, +1), try pressing Shift-w and Shift-m. Put the helmet on, press those again, and you'll notice the difference.

honestly i've heard (9,9) being theoretical max. don't know reasons so it might be wrong.

imho, it depends on item. i glimpsed at results of guys wishing for tones of robes none was better then (1,1). well again not knowing char level and dungeon danger level i wouldn't say it is top value for robes.
