I contracted Teleportitis from a pool before entering the ToEF. I had needed Fire resistance. I got it, but at the price of my char's life. I had a ring of TC handy and except for places I couldn't take it -- The ToEF (levels 1-3) being the only place that also allows teleportation. Later, after retrieving the Air orb I went to get some XP from the fire temple since my character wasn't too confident he could take the Earth temple without extra tedium. After running out of healing options, my char decided to leave. Alas, the teleportitis kicked in every time my char got within reach of the exit on ToEF:1. A fire giant eventually got me after 12 times of getting within 15 steps of the exit.

Dang, that's brutal.

Advice is less helpful after the fact, but I still want to offer some. I recommend just entering the ToEF even without intrinsic fire resistance. Drakes are common enough in there that you'll get the intrinsic quickly if you don't have it already.

I had been scumming for corpses for some time before I resorted to pools. The seccond time I entered I was wearing a ring of Ice (to hold some stomafillia and spensweed) + a ring of fire resistance. I should've brought one of my two rings of TC in as well because I would've teleported out of there in the 72 turns I had left to live if I didn't have that last source of fire resistance but oh well.

I usually get fire resistance even before poison resistance, fire beetles and lizards are very common.

...but in my experience, spiders always give poison resistance, but I've eaten both lizards and fire bugs without getting the fire resistance. (Verified through insight/revelation)

But still, those are the easy ones.
Oh yeah, acid is very easy too, due to a certain guaranteed ant hive.

I think fire beetles are something like 10% chance of fire resistance. Fire lizards are around 60%. Drakes and dragons are 100%.

Also, in some rare cases, you can eat a spider corpse without getting resistance. That may be because of eating cursed corpses, or maybe just a random chance. This is a very annoying circumstance, because not only do you not get poison resistance, but you have to wait a long time for the poison effects from the corpse to finish.

Ha, eating gorgons still definitely isn't a practical strategy. But I'll keep that in mind.

Okay, I guess I had fire corpses reversed. Which message means you got resistance from a fire lizard? "You suddenly shiver..."? I think I remember getting that message, but very rarely.
