I became a fallen champion the other day.

Excellent character, Dwarven Barbarian. Got crowned with Fire Immunity and the mighty morning star "Grod". Had some luck smithing, eternium shield and Big Punch for dangerous stuff, 70 DV and 27 PV on normal tactics, all stats in the mid 20s. Had great luck, found 4 PoGA, 7 league boots, girdle of carrying, bows and crossbows of accuracy, slaying ammo, 2 rings of Djinni Summoning (wished for AoLS and "Find Weakness" skill). Had speed to 120 also.

I figured I'd find a ring of ice, so I tried using the Ancient Scythe method. 5 tries and no luck, had a nice explosion that gave me 4 corruptions and had to use 3 blessed SoCRs to clear them (mana battery and poison hands and bulging cranium, blah!). Blessed potions of exchange, no luck. Ok, time for some grave-robbing!

Bad idea. I noticed my alignment dropping from N= to n- and then NC. I stuck on my blessed amulet of balance, figuring that would take care of it. WRONG! A few more graves, and I was CN, and I heard the booming voice. "How dare you change alignments after I crown you champion?!?" Blasted with a bolt of true matter, didn't hurt too bad, spectres were summoned, few dozen, started thrasing them, lost 2 strength from taking hits.

I'm still blessed, and still have fire immunity and Grod.

So, what are the problems with becoming a fallen champion? Can I get back in the good graces of my god so I can pray for help, and get post-crowing gifts? If not, could I get those benefits if I increase my piety with another god?

I'm guessing it means, no more praying for help and no postcrowning possibilities.

I lost a promising char last week the same way... you can get back in good graces with your god (or any other), but you won't be able to get crowned. I'm pretty sure post-crowning is out of the question, too.

I'm guessing post-crowning would still be possible - if not with that god then maybe at a different alignment. You're not likely to get the chance for that though, considering the number of artifacts generated so far. The only other implications are that Khelly won't give you the trident in exchange for the crumpled scroll, and you can't pass through the gate even with the full trinity.

Better a normal ending than no ending at all...

Yeah. Being a fallen champion isn't a bad thing at all really, since most endings are normal anyway.

I thought post-crowning gifts were not dependent on number of artifacts generated, simply higher and higher amounts of piety needed for each subsequent post-crowning...?

I though it was PRE-crowning gifts that were dependent on # of artifacts generated already. Oh well, guess I'll find out soon.

Re: robbing graves with amulet of balance. AFAIK amulet of balance only reduces the impact of lawful/chaotic acts affecting ones alignment and the effect is not too big. IMO you should have worn a blessed amulet of order (received as a reward for killing the outlaw leader for the Terinyo sheriff) and waited a while for alignment to rise a bit. That's what I tend to do when robbing graves.

Nightmare: Post-crowning has the same restrictions as precrowning (check the guidebook if you don't believe me). Otherwise we'd all spend ages getting huge numbers of artifacts after crowning with casino gold.

I was wearing a blessed amulet of order, and it made me lose piety with my god. I went from very close to ground rumbling and unconcerned when I sacced later.

The reason those spectres beat me up so good I found out, is because falling from champion status gives you the Cursed/Doomed intrinistics. I had no idea. So THAT is why it's so bad, you lose all your piety and have to build it back up with another deity just to get those 2 nasty intrinistics off.

Or you could munch on a blessed karmic being corpse, but those are hard to come by.
