Wow, it's been a while...

Started a DE Barbarian this week, and he's been very very lucky. I even thought he started out pretty good with St23, Dx20, To20. Stated by going down the UD, always wishing for that E2HS in SC, but as always, it's only the wizards who find those..

But, luck was with this guy after all. First I found herbs, which is always good. Then made every gnoll in a gnoll vault throw their axe at me, which turned out to be a pretty good idea... Battle axe of devastation (+0, 5d6+8) =) UD:7 had a neutral altar, got precrowned with Wyrmlance using stomafillia. Also found lots of good shields, large, medium and tower crystal shields, in that order. Very nice.

After the UD got healing, bought detect traps, fetched puppy corpse, killed crime lord. Tried for another precrowning now but couldn't get it, maybe an artifact was generated cursed somewhere and I didn't try it on? Got crowned neutral instead with Skullcrusher and fire immunity.

Now I'm in Dwarftown, and Waldenbrook was kind enough to sell me another good weapon, an admantium scimitar of penetration! So now here's my question: What to do with all these weapons of mine? Here's my list:

-battle axe of devastation
-Skullcrusher
-adman. scimitar of penetration
-wyrmlance

Which one should I use? The one-handed weapons I would use with the crystal tower shield [+13, +7]. I could also swap wyrmlance situationally with a one-handed orcish spear of mayhem 3d8+8 (from scumming scorchers in an orc vault...), so I could specialize in polearms. I've got axes at lvl 8, clubs at 6, swords at 4, polearms 1.

Also, Thrundarr told me to slay a shadow lord for literacy. Grr, first time this char got even a bit unlucky. What would be the best place to look for one? Should I hang about in the big room? Go to the Tomb of the High Kings maybe with it's cavernous levels?

EDIT: Did the pyramid and found a sword of sharpness. Um, yeah.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Skullcrusher has humanoid slaying, which gives it the biggest punch of the four. The sword of sharpness fits well with the adamantium scimitar of penetration since you can specialize in swords only then. I'd still use Skullcrusher: Smash the Master Summoner, exterminate the Chaos Archmage... And the adamantium scimitar of penetration will work wonders against the Ancient Stone Beast.

If you are a true spear/shield-believer (like many out there seem to be), you'll of course use that orcish spear of mayhem with your shield; but as a barbarian, raw damage output is your foremost concern.

I'd advise against using Wyrmlance in any case, EXCEPT maybe against the Ancient Chaos Wyrm. But seeing you've only got level 1 in Polearms, you'd have to train heavily...
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

First off, congrats on a very lucky character, I envy you. I have never started a dark elf who had more than 18 Str & To initially. And that shield, do you realize how lucky a find that is? +7 PV on it? Geez, 3 or 4 is normal! Going around on very aggressive will train that thing up soooo fast!

The problem with some of your weapons (spear, SoS and axe), is that they are vulnerable to destruction, from slime corrosion, acid traps/vortices/breath, flame, and crushing (stone block trap or falling door, rift even). I would hate for you to train them up to mastery just to have them ruined, then it could very well have all been for nothing.

I would train up the swords for the times you run into something with a very high PV and can't make a dent in them. I'd also train with Skullcrusher the most, there are lots of humanoids and it can't be destroyed unlike your other weapons, so it's something you can depend on.

If you need an extremely high DV (say if you wanted to scum the outside of the bug temple and get all the dex and speed, or for vs corrupting hit creatures), you could do the spear and shield, but I wouldn't go for that until you find a good backup spear or two.

What you didn't list, and I'd highly recommend, is getting a longbow and heavy crossbow of accuracy and training those up to about level 9 or so, in order to deliver slaying ammo into things you wouldn't want to tangle with face to face.

TotHKs is a good place to look for shadow lords, they are also found below Dwarftown in the CoC. That is a rare monster to have to find, like getting Green Blob, Shambling Mound, Gray Slayer, Ogre Magi.

Thanks for all the quick answers, it's good to see that this board is still active :)

I've raised swords and clubs both to 8 now, I did the pyramid, griff quest and emptied darkforge without any problems. I think I'll go to the TotHK's cavernous levels trying to find a shadow lord and raise my missile skills as well, I have 5 in bows but I've also got a heavy crossbow of accuracy which could become useful with some training.

I've been playing adom on and off for about 5 years about. I think this is the best start I've ever had, I'll try to make sure I don't mess up and will try my best to make this my first victory =)

EDIT: Okay, so I found a shadow lord. Looked up it's danger level, 13, and looked for it in the NDC above DF, danger level 18. After gaining literacy and reading a blessed ?oI, discovered among all my stuff: 5 PoGA and an AoLS! Now I have to work really hard not to screw up. I just can't stop playing, it's so fun, I can't wait to discover how I get killed with this guy :D

I can only imagine what you'll get next, with the luck you've been having.

So, did you get a ring of ice or item with fire immunity yet? That's usually the point things slow down for me. I hope you find some seven league boots too, discretion is the better part of valor I've heard ;)

With the PoGA, if I have some stats in the mid teens or lower(like willpower if I've been eating bugs) I'll try and train that up with herbs or Garth first, dump like 20 grand into training or more if I can. Then once the stats have gone up a bunch of times, Then I'll drink the PoGA, so I can get more out of them - since the PoGA work same at stat #1 as they would at stat #98, but herbs and training slow down majorly around the 20s.

I got Wi, To and Dx at around 25 or 26 before using the PoGA with herbs, I didn't care that much about the others, but I have them at around 20 now.

I tried to double my money once with a baby black dragon but instead of picking up my money he decided to melt away the 90000. *sigh*

I don't have a ring of ice, but I think I'll try doing the ToEF without it... I can't use slaying ammo, but I trained polearms to 11 (clubs and swords also) with gremlins so I'll try to melee the ACW with Wyrmslayer, I've got speed 123 with a ring of speed and fire immunity from crowning. With alertness and dodge I'll avoid the bolts and high Wi and ring of of mental stability keep me from getting confused.. I'll pretty much have to go berserk with the ACW, without a shield I can't get useful DV anyway.

7LB's would be nice, but aren't absolutely necessary because of the barbarian skill of movement costing 750. I'm nearing the 90 day limit though...

EDIT: ACW was a bit of a letdown, he managed to try to hit me once, missing 2 hits against DV 31 and failing to hurt a PV 34 with the third. He himself died in three hits. Should have known better and finished him in one tremendous blow instead >:)

think there might be a shadow lord in the graveyard?

anywa, i'd recommend getting more skills with skullcrusher.

I had a character run across a vault full of jellies. I had a stone axe with me, but no ranks in it.

I think the only thing that saved me there was invisibility.

as an artifact, you don't have to worry about corrosion from jellies

Congrats on getting the fire orb! What's next, down to Casino? Or scum around hoping for an AoLS or wish? Those SoCRs are mighty tempting... Also, did you visit the Dwarven Mystic yet?

The mystic gave me crap.. Some potions IIRC. Also accidentally killed my first cat at just a few levels before meeting the cat lord :( Got nature's companion and cloak of oman from the casino. Air temple was pretty doable, I was lightning immune from eating blessed lightning lizard corpses(and had the armor) and the summoner didn't give me any bad stuff.. I also did the minotaur maze, I had some scrolls of magic mapping and a couple of crystals of knowledge, also had managed to learn the spell at some point. I lost a couple of mana points to exhausting myself with the spell, also got drained 2 points of toughness, but the axe is my favorite weapon ever so it doesn't matter. :) Better than vanquisher with find weakness, if only I could've gotten the cat ring also..

Did the rift and library for some experience. Experience and also for the weird tome and more lovely SoCRs :) Random RoDS drop on some rift level. Wished for 7LBs.

Tried the bug place. The top level was quite easy, but downstairs there's just too many killer bugs to kill. I have to retreat after meleeing three or four, and in that time they've duplicated more of them.

After that I got killed. The earth temple did me in. I shouldn't have died there, but somehow got careless with my movement and let the elementals surround me in a corner, then the boss joined the slaughter and I got killed. Didn't even run out of healing potions but got a couple of critical hits on me on the same turn. Should've just went more carefully and always lured them out to the hallway I dug to get in there, so I could have retreated.

Sucks, this was one of my best chars yet. I've never won yet but this guy had all the tools for it, was just my own stupidity that the elementals and grues managed to surround me into that corner in the temple.

Then I also tried to roll a few bards with 7LB's from the start. One gnome had a few good skills like alertness and concentration. I always go for the first kill in lawinotheilwhatsitsface(beggar now for such a weak char) and got an AoLS on sale! Died about 20secs later that when learning pickpocketing, an outlaw leader found me inside the building and didn't manage to get by him even on coward settings..

Now I'm playing with a few more chars, a hurthling thief, a hurthling assassin(boomerang is fun) and a drakish wizard. Nothing exceptional, but I have found a weird amount of altars today. The thief found THREE in the druid dungeon and the wizard found two in the carpenter dungeon.

That blows. Singling them out, taking them downstairs and raping them with the adamantium scimitar of penetration would have worked. Oh well, they can't all be winners.
