Can anyone help me?

How do I get past rivers without all my equipment rusting and my scrolls being wrecked?

And I've been asked by the dwarf dude to kill a vapour rat. What the hell is that? Where can I find one? Should I hang out at the big cave level until one spawns?

Thanks

To swim without suffering equipment damage, you'll need a waterproof blanket. Since you don't have one, I recommend other ways of crossing rivers. You can teleport to the other side. You can freeze the water to create an ice bridge, but do not attempt to cross with more than 2000 stones of equipment. If you have the Bridge Building skill then you can build a real bridge, but I think this is more trouble than it's worth.

There's always a waterproof blanket in the small cave, but that might be too hard to get.

Vapor rat has a danger level of 11, so you need to look for one on D:11 or deeper. The levels above the high kings tomb generate monsters fast and would probably be you're best bet.

Also, dipping items into blessed potions of rust removal makes them rustproof, which is very useful for nice iron items like swords of sharpness and such.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

You can also try throwing items over the river :) As long as it isn't potions, it shouldn't break... And potions aren't affected by water.

Actually, I have a waterproof blanket! But how do I equip/use it?

Just leave it in your backpack and it should work if it's not cursed.

Well, unequip them. Of course, that's going to lead to a bit of trouble if monsters await you on the other shore...

Note for bridge building: While you shouldn't do it if you are unable to get one of these, Bridgebuilding might not be such trouble. Wearing a blessed girdle of carrying helps with carrying logs, and spellcasters without an ice spell can cast Strength of Atlas/Lordly Might (the two are the same, but priests get the latter name) and they will basically be able to carry enough logs to abridge the Wilderness River (you can't, by the way).
EDIT: Oh, and carrying logs can help train strength if you are encumbered enough and your strength is low enough.

Logs are better than ice, because log bridges can stand the weight of heavy characters, unlike ice bridges.

However after the midgame I expect to have 2-3 waterproof blankets at all times, I'll have swimming skill high enough, and all my equipment will be artifact, higher-metal or rustproofed (smithed-up rustproof bracers of resistance/regeneration, smithed-up gauntlets of strength)

^That also depends on your luck, for example the amount of holy water/oils of rust removal, and for some reason most of my characters only find the SMC blanket.

Doesn't the hooded cloak to a certain extent prevent equipped items from rusting?

Well D'OH, it's a hooded cloak, its speciality is that it is hooded and covers you from anything coming above, it can't help much in swimming >_<

As for the vapor rat, those are guaranteed to be generated in the air temple, if you don't find one before that.
