I have a promising (7LB, decent weapon, not dead) Dwarf Paladin, who has just been asked to slay a chaos eye. Any suggestions, preferably without delving too deep if possible...

Any help appreciated...

Try on that level above Darkforge or the cavernous levels above the TotHK.

Or if you find a normal eye, make a corruption trap (or find one), make it walk over it repeatedly, and voila - chaos eye.

I'd say about 4 or 5 off the top of my hat. At least that's when I start to see them.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

White baby dragon: 10
black: 11
red: 12
blue: 11
karmic: 18

Not sure about these, since I feel I've seen them earlier on.

And all of them frequent the guess what... Dwarven Halls... Non-karmic ones are nice walking treasure hoards for strong fighters. It's the karmics I hate. Unless I'm an archer or have slaying ammo of course.

Now I wonder why I typed that, since no-one cares...

I've just been given the exact same quest.
Arrived at dwarf town, though should I sell stuff or talk to the dwarf.
Thought its the same chance of getting a bad quest either way, so got the quest first.
Thats life.

I did some testing whether character level had anything to say for quest given. I believe it turned out to be as random as one could want.

I had one char Exp and Eq up nicely, and another getting just beelining to the halls avoiding getting exp and eq (took a few tries, that did). Both saved immediately before getting first quest, then I would reload and get quest quite a few times each. No noticable difference, and the naked-1st level char did get some of the real "bad" ones.

Interesting results, I would have expected exp.
level to have an affect. Maybe that is just me
seeing patterns where none exist though.

I know that the exp. level of the PC does have
an affect on what types of monsters that appear
in the dungeons, and especially wilderness
encounters. An exp. level 50 PC can run in to
some pretty nasty monsters, even on D:1.

I wonder what exp. level was your experienced
PC at, of particular interest, was he above
exp. level 15. Also, what were the respective
lucky/fate smiles intrinsics. Was the
experienced PC wearing the Ankh?

Posted by me nov. 2006:

"About thundrarr's quest, I did a little testing at one time about quest 1.

It [once] seemed to me that if a character went straight to get quest, and did not have high level or much equipment, then his quest would be an easy, common monster. And high-levelled, equipped characters would get Shambling mounds, Hydras and such.

Testing, however, showed that assigned kill was totally random."

Doesn't say anything about luck/fate, but my naked char certainly didn't have this, but the experienced might have. Should be easy to make a highlevel eq-ed char without lucky/fate, but I would be very surprised if that had an effect

On the subject of the monsters that appear getting harder, is this due to experience of the character, or the time elapsed in the game.
IMO its down to the characters experience, but I've never tested it. The only time I've come across Ogre armies is when I was quite happy to wade into them with a lvl 45 DE Wizard, and not even bother casting spells.

Wilderness encounters depend on PCs level. It's not elapsed gametime. I can't find the pointer to a site with level needed for the different encounters, but I just tested a level 1 char with 180 days elapsed - just the normal, starting encounters.

Agreed. The elapsed game time/turns also
seem to me, to have no effect on the
danger levels of the monsters encountered,
in the dungeons or wilderness.

The things I know for sure that have an
affect are the exp. level of the PC, and
the cursed/doomed status of the PC. The
things I think have an affect are the
lucky/fate smiles status, the moon cycle
status and birthday status.

I don't think the quest monster is
completely random though. I have recieved
about a zillion first quests from Thrundaar,
and the worst monster that I've ever gotten
was a troll berserker. I have never gotten
something like a greater moloch, or emperor
lich or any thing along those lines. I think
there must be a cap of some sort, on the
danger level of the assigned monster.

It always seemed to me that since the cursed/
doomed status and the exp. level of the PC
does increase the danger levels, of the
monsters randomly encountered (in dungeons
and wilderness), that it would also influence
the danger level of the assigned quest monster.
I have never tested that though, since being
cursed or doomed at that stage in the game
is pretty rare.

heres a link to a wilderness encounters list, but beware some of them are wrong. http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/~eva/adom/wilderness.html For example, it says you need to be lvl 15 to find a lone red dragon in the mountains. Wrong. I've found them at lvl 15.

Gut: Yes there is a cap. I wasn't being clear. There is a danger level cap. I meant "random" as the monster list a naked level 1 char would see after being assigned 1st quest 50 times is the same as an stacked level 20 pc. I wrote down 50 results or so, and found very similar lists. Slightly "worse" monster for the 1st level char, actually. But well within statistical expectations for random distribution.

I can't find the lists, must be on my old, dead computer. So I can't tell what the danger level cap is. Real problem is, of course, rarity.

i heard it is dependent on deepest DL your saw. monster is somewhat spawn according to max seen DL+x.

the thing is given DL of dwarftown this ends around 15. But probably robing darkforge is not very vise in case of you randomness.

It makes sense, that the danger level of the
assigned quest monster, would be influenced
by the maximum danger level the PC has seen.
If that is true it would explain a lot.

My higher exp. level PC's, that recieve a rare
or difficult quest monster, would have probably
visited the BUGWIL first thing. That helps my
magic users get a faster start, but the BUGWIL
would naturally have a VERY high danger level.

I don't think that recieving a more difficult
quest monster, would prevent me from visiting
the BUGWIL though. I would still think the
benefits are good enough to justify it. I
usually find my quest monster in the big room
of the CoC. I wonder if the 'maximum danger level
seen' has any bearing on what types of monsters
are generated in the dungeon levels?

Ran a test:
Trollish Beastfighter clones:
Lowquest: Went straight to dwarftown, which was generated at level D:9.

Highquest: Went directly down to DH:2 (danger level 45), then back up. No items picked up, but sadly "had to" become level 4 due to blocking monsters.

Then I found out that chars have to be level 6 to receive the quest, and levelled both up to that level. Neither character picked up anything except food eaten from the floor.

Both characters then got the 1st quest 20 times, I've written out name and level of each monster below.

Highquest:
Goblin Rockthrower - 1
Goblin Berserker - 4
Giant Rat - 1
Gelatinous Cube - 3
Clay Golem - 9
Floating Eye - 2
Caveman - 6
Owlbear - 5
Huge Bat - 3
Hill Orc Sergeant - 7
Raider - 3
Kobold Chieftain - 3
Berserker Lord - 10
Cave Lion - 4
Gargoyle - 6
Orc - 1
Goblin Chieftain - 3
Ratling Archer - 2
Dark Elven Priestess - 9
Black Hurthling - 2

Highest monster level: 10
Avg. monster level: 4,2

Lowquest
Goblin Rockthrower - 1
Mummy - 10
Lightening Lizard - 12
Hell Hound - 6
Barbarian - 4
Gnoll - 2
Claw Bug - 2
Doppleganger - 4
Zombie - 2
Black Hurthling - 2
Clay Golem - 9
Ghost - 7
Lizard man - 2
Shadow Lord - 13
Orc - 1
Goblin Rockthrower - 1
Ratling Thief - 2
Shadow - 5
Jackalwere - 4
Large Jackal - 4

Highest monster level: 13
Avg. monster level: 4,65

which sadly doesn't prove a thing. Highquest might have simply not have generated his high end luck...

anyway as i said expected value is around DL15 even for dwarftown alone. DL15 is a bunch of nasty stuff already.

Perhaps it doesn't prove anything. But it
certainly makes me feel a lot better
about clearing the BUGWIL before getting
my quest monster.

I'm now just wondering if there is
*anything* that could be done to sway
Thrundaar's choice of quest monster.
Gender, piety, Ankh, a higher Mana stat
(the manual indicates Mana is luck).
ANYTHING?!

As i remember my previous black statements on luck... you need Mana at 40 to get any feel of extra luck.

As i've heard you can control RNG by manipulating machine's time. Someone somewhere claimed to have program allowing to get wishes every time you drink from pool.
Personally i prefer reroll character.
