Back when I was first playing ADOM, before I
got spoiled, I found that noticing the prices
that shopkeepers offered for items, would
give me hints as to what they were worth.

Like if an item was cursed, or just realy bad,
you usualy get a bad price (not always though).
If on the other hand, Waldenbrook made an offer
of say, a few 1000 gp's for a pair of 'worn
boots', that was an indication that some testing
should be done. In fact I still do this for ID
purposes if I don't find some SoI quickly.

I had some old save files (ADOM 1.0.0), of a few
dark elven fighters with some artifacts, so I
loaded them up, and recorded the prices I got for
them at the black market. I post this mainly for
fun , on some items I couldn't agree more, but on
some I just say "Huh!"

Notice emerald dagger 4265 gp! Huh!
Whirlwind gets almost as much!

Thunderstroke is a bit high though :)

I gained new appreciation for Hammerhead,
it rivals mighty Executor.

Emerald dagger is indeed surprisingly low, as is the ankh. And RotMC the same price as RoI? Really now... Staff of the Archmagi on the other hand is rated overly high (same as Vanquisher? pfft...), as is Soaker (which most prefer to name Sucker).

You say this list is compiled with different characters? Though you've kept their race the same their charismas will be different, and more importantly the race of the shopkeeper can make prices vary wildly (guidebook has the exact comparisons).

Yeah, I knew about the charisma and
race effect, so I used the Ancient
Mummy Wrapping as a reference point.
The price of the AMW varied by only
a few hundred for all characters.
I know it's not exact, and I suspect
that prices probably changed a bit
for ADOM 1.1.1.
I should also point out that I wasn't
a member or head of the thives guild,
for any of the PC's, so prices would
surely be much higher at another shop.

The low price for the ankh isn't that surprising - it doesn't do a lot, if you think about it.

And Ring of the Master Cat compared to Ring of Immunity... Their benefits are entirely different from each other, so it's hard to compare.

The Ankh does do a lot. Luck is indispensable (though lesser vaults are nice via javelin of doom since you can get rid of that easily), and two PV AND two DV is worth an amulet of defense/protection as well. The Ankh may not be the only amulet you would wear, but that is because there is some situations where failure to wear a certain kind of amulet could result in death.

RotMC is soooooo much better than the RotMC. Elemental immunity only means a lot in the ToEF. Other immunites can often be attained if they are needed by swapping in the right equipment (like ring of elemental mastery or blue dragon scale mail). Whereas the RotMC grants fate smiles, speed, critical hits to your weaponry becomes more likely, and something else that I'm missing (Dx increase?).

Infinite digging is a good thing. But damage and slaying powers should count for a bit more, lol

Immunities are pretty much unnecessary anyway, considering every character usually has natural resistance plus at least elemental gauntlets...

The ankh's [+2, +2] is fairly pathetic, but it gives a lot of luck. Still, the main reason people like it is because it's far better than most amulets. However, if I get Preserver in a game then I will wear it without a moment's thought - the ankh in no way compares to it.

RoI is probably rated highly because 4 immunities is a lot more than most artifacts give, and the [+5, +5] is nice. But the giant Dex bonus and other useful statuses from the kitty ring are usually much more preferable, and most players really do rip their hair out trying to get this marvellous thing. If I get RoI from a precrowning I'll usually think meh - there's a lot nicer things you can get.

In my current game, I avoided killing all cats until just before the ToEF...And then I walked around in the dark.
