EDIT: Lithium man: The simplest metal. This challenge game is about finishing the game without visiting any unnessesary dungeons. You will go to the CoC and ToF in this game.

I decided to start this new thread instead of corrupting the "handy tips" thread, after the subject of lithium man came up.

What are good candidates for that challenge?
I see some things about it:
No ID scumming for books and no library visit.
(weaker for casters? wizards/mabye? But less items for other classes too)
No herbalism/healing unless you start with it.
(candle can fix healing. Herbalism might be good to have but not vital)
No detect traps unless you start with it.
(I'm really thinking dwarf here. But survivable without I should imagine)
No pickpocket.
(I'll live without I think)
Have to handle the dwarftown portal lever yourself
(Hm.)
No Ring of the High kings.
(Can be handled)
No loot from darkforge.
(annoying)

Further down the line, I suppose corruption might be a problem. No corpses to turn in for PoCC, No HMV scroll, No library scrolls, No bugville. If unable to save Khelly you should really hope for some from the dwarven mystic.

I'll give this some testing. I will first attempt to merely complete the game by just visiting those locations, that should be hard enough for me.

I'll try a dwarven something. Wizard or mabye Priest. Please note down any progress you may have had or information you have learned trying this.

I did look up the google group, and found this:
"hmm .. here's a few tips, based on my experience of one lithium man
winner;

* Save Khelavaster or get a *spellbook, NOT A WAND* of teleportation to
get rid of Thrundarr to open the portal.
* Do the Water temple before the ToEF.

And, of course, having offensive magic from all the elements helps a lot -
which is why I played an elementalist and was *very* happy to get a wish
to waste on spellbooks of acid ball..

.. anyway, controlled teleportation at will, and *getting a means of death
ray resistance* are vital for a lithium man, as you can't get the usual
love-child artifacts (AMW, ankh, elemental gaunts, RotHK, etc etc) and are
generally weaker than usual characters. But, good luck for your char!

It might be handy to post what the actual Lithium Man challenge is. I don't totally get it.

Lithium Man = win while visiting only CoC and ToEF.

My opinion - use the classes with good built-in powers to handle everything. Mindcrafters, necromancers and weaponsmiths seem particularly well-suited for this. On the racial side, dwarves and drakelings look good, while elves and trolls seem particularly (spelling?) hard.

Regarding the lithium man challenge. I never actually
tried for it, but I remember doing it once by accident.
It was (long ago!) in ADOM 1.0.0. I used a grey elven
wizard, got lucky and found a book shop on one of the
levels before dwarftown. This broke the game for sure,
but I didn't care. I just wanted to beat the game in
the fewest amount of game-turns possible. At the time,
I didn't even know this was a challenge game. I just
thought, at the end of the game, that it was really
unique. That's why that game kinda stuck in my mind.

I fully intended to skip all other places in the game,
not for challenge reasons, just for game-turn reasons,
but planned to do the pyramid for the AMW + Ankh. Well,
I missed the pyramid because my exp. level turned 17.
So I just zipped through the game, only visiting the
ToEF. I forget what situation caused me to miss the
pyramid, but I suspect something like getting bogged
down with a breeder.

Spelling of "particularly" seems alright to me, zv.

Back on topic, I've not been playing much ADOM recently, but I might try the Lithium Man challenge today with a druid, seeing as I'm currently writing a guide for druids.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Tried with a few wizards.
One found a pool on D:1 (shock resist, teleport control) but later died to poison.
A few others died miserably too, didn't get to build up PV to survive much. Got tired of them weaklings.
Got a good one running now. He already had a hairy moment - he had to run from an infestation of red worms. Closed himself into a rather small room. Luckily he started with 2 bolt-spell books and found another of lightning bolt. And luckily there was a nice 2*2 bush pattern in the room with him (morgia + moss). And luckily he had bought some cooked lizards. But I still thought I was dead, as I saw no way to clear the worms quickly enough (there was a rather big room filled with them just out the next corridor)

The fiery worms destroyed every piece of equipment I had, and my problem was that I ran out of PP before I could clear them out of the first, long, bending corridor to the next door. But after getting some levels, and building up willpower and toughness and dex from the herbs, and even mana from casting spells so much I was finally able to clear them with bouncing lightning bolts. Whew. So now I've got some time invested in him he might work out.

Need to work on a precrown, need to smith, need other herbs...hm. Wonder how hard this can be. Wizards are usually so easy for me I hardly play them anymore.

I must say that some things like herbs and smithing are somewhat against the grain of the challenge - the idea being to complete the game in as little time as possible. Of course, they're not restricted, and they do help.

Of special consideration is that after bypassing the Eternal Guardian you're best never resurfacing again, so be ready for a full plunge to the finish. Many things are best left to the side so that you don't get too corrupted, and if there's a faster way of doing something then do it. For a greater vault you may want to just teleport in to get the artifacts then teleport out. Levels can be hard to gain, making gnomes fairly effective. Elementalists are handy since they don't need weapons and equipment so much, though they'll run into trouble with karmic dragons.

Silfir: That's funny, because I presently
have about 25K written on a druid's guide.
I'm sending what I have to you, do with it
as you see fit.

Darren: Herbs are against the spirit of the
challenge? Yikes! Herbs don't really take
that many turns, to harvest. If you apply
the herbalism skill, it really speeds things
up a lot. You can still do the challenge in
under 40000 turns, using herbs. I wonder what
is the average number of turns, for a completed
lithium man game.

Actually, good point, herbs can be harvested fairly quickly and then simply applied throughout the game. I'm thinking too much of my extended scumming sessions with sickness, time spent pacifying big room, whilst also gathering stomafilia for a precrown, etc.

Looking at some flgs on RGRA they actually take their time about it - 100k in one instance, and the fastest I can see is 56k. The actual game time is less though - 31 days in one instance.

First time I'll do it, any way I can. And that will probably include a precrown, mabye two. Regular crowning too, one should probably hope to find fire immunity artifact or crowning - I usually wear ring of the HK and elemental gauntlets in the ToEF (D-oh) as they provide fire resist and cannot be destroyed.

And elemental gauntlets will keep rings safe, but. Hm. What gauntlets to use? I suppose they will all burn. Mabye "scum" for metal ones to chain-use. (scum as in picking up all the useless ones from ratling nasties)

Or go without rings. Ring of Ice is mithril, I believe, so that should be okay.

Still I guess a wizards could to the ToEF naked, if need be.

Just thought up a new challenge. Character cannot wear or wield anything. Ever.

Streaker man or naked man or something. Or if one must stick to metal-theme: Copper (tone) man.

Not a good challenge to use an archer, I should think.

That challenged was already completed. I distinctly remember reading about it, because tactics used were amusing. Like taking a few corruptions from the first found trap to get some PV.

Anyway, I'm trying to do a Lithium Dwarf too. Mindcrafters failed miserably (didn't ever manage to reach CoC, even with Long Stride and Candle :|), so I turned to Weaponsmiths. They are a bit challenged without Healing, Herbalism and when not born under Candle, but I hope that once I secure a forge and a pick axe I'll tank one up and never worry again. Though beating ToEF will be... interesting.

Dark elven druid still alive and kicking. Miraculously survived being ganged up on by a wolf AND a spider factory. I'm now in Dwarftown, angry because I have to kill a crystal statue after taking years to kill two of them before.

@ gut: The parts you wrote are looking great. Are you sure you don't want to write the rest yourself? I'm not that far (Only got up to hurthling in the race evaluation), so I could always switch to another class to write about :) (My policy of only writing about classes I've won with allows for some other choices...)

Also, if you ask me, druids should be called PRIMARY spellcasters, not semi-spellcasters. They're simply the primary spellcasting class that sucks the most at spellcasting early on.

I also am jumping on the lithium man bandwagon.
I've got a grey elven wizard up to the point
where he's about to do the ToEF. Game-turns
stand at 24000. I think I'm on track to do
it in under 40000, but we'll have to see how
the tower goes.

Silfir: It doesn't matter to me, it's whatever
you prefer. I started it a few weeks before
the hollidays and lost interest. If I was to
finish it, it would probably be a while.

Lithium man challenge.
Only two places may be visited: The Caverns of Chaos and the Tower of
Eternal Flames. The game must be completed in the fewest number of
turns possible.

This game had no scumming of any kind. No gremlin exploiting, no piety
abuse, no stat scumming by means of starvation or sickness, no casino
gold or dragon gold doubling, nothing.

Additional restrictions were: No praying, no saving, and had to close
the gate in under 40000 moves, else suicide.

Went straight to the CoC. Read my spellbooks (lightning and frost bolt).
Got lucky time and again. Early tension rooms provided me many spellbooks
and an amulet of life-saving for Khelevaster. I actually spent more time
in the big room, gathering herbs than I needed to, but I was getting many
books in there too, so I stayed. The water orb was easy this time... I
had a miserable time last time! The ToEF was easy because I had the frost
bolt spell trained well, and I had the ice ball spell. I only had two
rings of fire resistance though, so had to constantly heal myself with
the cure light wounds spell.

I got crowned neutral, once back in dwarftown. I had spent pretty much all
my gold on piety, throughout the entire game, and never swithched allignment.
I was rewarded with fire imunity and the Robes of Resistance. I kinda wish
I had done that BEFORE the tower! After passing the EG, I stole what I
wanted from the casino (Bracers of War, potions and some other stuff). This
got me cursed, and I kept the cursing for the remainder of the game, because
I never found an alter. I'm sure there was one, I just never found it. On
D:35 I think, I found a threat room of greater molochs. I led them up the
stairs and killed them, one by one, with a combination of lightning bolt
and demon slaying ammo. I went from exp. level 20's to 30's. As a result,
the rest of the game was easier than normal.

I found a shop on D:47, it sold me the most unique item that I believe I
have ever seen in a shop. An emperor lich figurine of wonderous power! I
didn't use it though, I stuck it in my missile slot at the end of the game
as a trophy! D:49 artifact was Executor, that plus acid ball made D:50
very easy. I shut the gate, teleported myself back to dwarftown, removed
my intrinsic cursing, and left the chain. I forgot to rename my PC along
the way, he finished with the name "Dfgd". I renamed him in the .flg. I wonder if that would
cause him to show up in the HoF as a bugged
score?

gut: regarding the cursing from shoplifting: AFAIK cursing and dooming can be removed using scrolls of luck, at least ISTR that. It could be that it requires blessed scrolls but I have a fairly strong memory image of managing to remove at least cursing that way.

Very nice! Surprised to see a victory on here so quickly, and quite a good one too. 35k turns is extremely impressive. Interesting to see what effect it has on your score - you got more than double the regular amount.

Certainly very few artifacts generated, though less is obviously possible. Absolute minimum I guess would be 7 - the orbs, the si and moon sickle. Chances of never generating any others are extremely slim though.

The Real J:
Your definitely right about scrolls of luck.
Uncursed, they will take your luck up by one
notch. Like from 'doomed' to 'cursed', or from
'lucky' to 'lucky and fate smiles'. Blessed
ones will take you up two notches.

I would have liked to have one, but I didn't.
In limited turns games, you will have few
such luxuries. Many of the nice items you
see in the inventory, are a result of D:50.
The only way I could have gotten a Scroll
of luck, was to wish for it. I thought
about that seriously, but kept telling
myself, I would probably find an alter on
the next level if I did.

Darren:
The guide book has some things about the
final score, the last line it has says:

MAX(0, moves - 50000) * 100

I'm not sure exactly what that means, but
if you win in under 50000 moves, it does
inflater your score a lot.

If that actually is the formula, you should get more score the more moves you make...

MIN(0, Moves-50k)* (-100) should inflate your score...

You cleared 2 elemental temples post-EG without finding an altar? Bad luck indeed :)

Taking my time with mine. Not really turn-wise though. Think I'll not pacify big room, but harvest herbs while fighting stuff for the drops. Two birds with one stone. The first Orc scorcher he found threw a orcish spear of mayhem. Good thing it didn't hit me

I think the prefixes are only applied *after* the items are dropped. Battle axes of penetration won't penetrate until picked up and such.

There are 3 elemental temples, after passing
the EG. I usually don't clear them.

I could have converted the elemental alters, and
used them, but I have been sacced before, and it
is not pleasant. If there is a way to have %100
protection from being sacced, I simply don't know
it. As far as the other levels, I didn't spend
time searching them. I meant that I just didn't
see one on the way. I can't remember any other
games where I didn't get one on the way.

Some of the temples are safe to convert when invisible, as long as you get rid of any chaos warriors. You could also make a wall of doors so they can't see you.

F50: You're quite right about that, making the guidebook unusually wrong. A simplification of the formula would be MAX(0, 50k - no turns)*100.

There is no way I would chance converting the
earth alter, those monsters can move through
doors and walls, plus see invisible and in
the dark. Clearing the earth or mana temples
completely just takes too much time.

The only temple that would have been realistic
(to me)to convert, would have been the air temple.
Converting it, in the darkness, while invisible
should have been %100 safe. At that early in
the game though, I just didn't think about the
possibility of not finding another alter.

For the air temple it would have been easy to just put a door in the entrance to the central chamber and lock it. Earth temple I'm surprised you didn't clear actually - I normally rely on it to get to L50. I suppose you must've already had fun with your moloch friends by then...

Y'know, I don't think I've ever actually converted a temple altar - generally considered it a bit too risky to bother with (and never had the need to). I once tried saccing a guardian and was told by the god to go sac myself instead... Probably a good thing considering it wouldn't have dropped the orb if sacced. Must try one game to convert all alters found - some ultra ultra lawful game or something, where I get the platinum girdle too.

Regarding the earth temple, I was completely out
of PP's at the time. I REALLY didn't want to drag
a dozen more earth elementals (and grues) up the
stairs to melee them. In limited turns games,
PP's are surely at a premium in the late game.
Recharging 100's of PP's takes 100's of turns.

Normally this isn't a big problem. I will just
teleport myself to the surface by way of the DF
shortcut, to recharge my PP's in the wilderness.
In this game however, that wasn't an option.

I did have the acid ball spell, but figured it
would be too corrupting, to regenerate PP's
that deep in the CoC.

To be honest, I didn't even notice the cursing.
It is very different than dooming. I would
actually consider it more accurate to call it
bad luck, than cursing. In fact I think a
greater identify of the 'Executor' artifact
says that it causes 'bad luck', when it really
shows up as 'cursing' in your intrinsics. Had I
been doomed, I certainly would have taken any
measure to remove it.

I gave this challenge a go with a nonspellcaster (orc barb to be more precise). Result was surprisingly good due some unbelieveable luck in the early game.

First I found RoDS on D:12 and saved Khelly. Then on level after the sage I find a ring shop with a ring of elemntal mastery, a ring of regeneration and a ring of ice. That gave me easy time in the tower. But never before had I killed the ACW with wand of magic missiles, my only offensive wand :P
I had used some 35k turns when in tower. Not having a way to teleport was turn consuming. Had no luck with wands of wonder either.

After the tower I started the dive to lower levels of CoC. Orcish spear of devastation (+1, 5d8+10) and a medium chrystal shield [+11,+4] were good combination. Everything fell fairly easy though mimics and Dorn Beasts gave some extra worry because I hadn't got any paralysis resistance. I had also Vanquisher as a crowning gift but it was almost useless because too low DV.

After the "flaming" stairs RNG must have decided that I had had too much luck already or was it only my low experience of the true nature of the lithium man. Three tension rooms to casino and one lesser vault, three rooms full of ghosts and one undead vault. EG stopped my descend for a while because I had no means of precise teleportation, only a helm of teleportation. Luckily enough ghul on the eternal guardians level dropped a writing set. I managed to create a scroll of teleportation and got past the EG.

Casino shop had Ironfist but otherwise very lame loot. I noticed that a gambling session took only one turn so I gambled in three long sessions to get the required 633k for Ironfist and some extra for slaying ammo, water, booze, unknown potions, and scrolls of identify and uncursing (because I had found only few from the dungeons).

I lured cat lord to one level higher used scroll of teleportation to get away, waited that he started attacking me in the new place and teleported back to the down staircase. After cat lord level there was cavernous level, yet again divided by water. Ancient black dragon dissolved my helm of teleportation, my spear of devastation and piles of other stuff and in blind rage I vanquished it. Next level was the air temple and it had the first altar after water temple. I had found no random altars at all!

I decided to descend in hopes of giant greater vault etc. Instead on D:40 I found room full of master liches. Vanquished a couple but found myself soon surrounded by ghosts and ghost lords. I was alreydy middle aged and decided to flee and change my ring of invis on. My iron gauntlets wont come off, that damn annis hag on that cavernous level. Check inventory, no scrolls of uncursing no holy water. I change Vanquisher to eternium spear and shield start to look for stairs, master lich summons some help! ghost lord punches trough your armour and crically hits you...I check background Age: 71, dead, 55 years of unnatural aging added in *damn*. I check inventory once more in hopes of any saving potions, nope as far as I know, move once more and the grim reaper appears in front of me and claims my life...

Now afterwards praying for divine help for getting the gauntlets off jumps to my mind but no cry over spilled potion of milk, or something...

All in all this was a very nice experience. Normally I have cleared VD/DD, PC and UD and maybe pyramid before arriving to CoC.Pickpocket every monster along the way so that my backpack is after that so full of stuff that I would have over ten different ways to kill for instance ACW but I always buff my char up to ridiculous stats and spend few exp. levels in the big room or in the TotHK to get even more stuff.
New things (for me) that I discovered while playing this challenge:
-New message: "The audience boos and throws vegetables." -Appeared when arena monster walked into a randomly created teleportation trap...
-You dont need to own a scroll that you are about to create with magical writing set, its enough if you have once identified one (for some reason I have always thought that you need a model peace)
-Orcs really and I mean really should avoid ghosts like plague :)
-Keys and fireproof blanket got the appreciation what they deserve when a door trap destroyed two of my blessed scrolls of chaos resistance
-Amulets of death ray resistance and free action are really like lottery wins without pick pockets -skill and with limited gameturns

The whole idea for this char was to be therapy for me: no more endless pondering of different options but just mindless bashing. Thats the story behind the char's name. Also he was second try 'Therapy', the human barbarian died on the way to CoC. The game happened to be everything else than mindless bashing or therapy so think I'll try soon again but this time wont have such a rush to lower levels. Instead stay in the big room for a while having fun wiht Vanquisher or some other crowning gift :D

Once you've trained up the two-handed weapon skill to an excellent level, the damage of Vanquisher is so enormous you practically don't need DV at all...

I trained two-handed weapons to lvl 8 or 9 on lower levels of CoC. It vanquished easily all minor monster but monsters with high DV/PV got me down to few hitpoints in few rounds due my low DV/PV and low stats (for example fire elementals, fire giant kings, berserker emperors, etc,).

Spear+ shield worked much better. It was too risky with Vanquisher even with coward tactics+ mighty or tremendous blows, if I missed my opponent, it had 2 or 3 rounds to hit me with multiple attacks and I had no means to heal quickly nor flee with teleportation. Regeneration took too long. No healing potions after I used all PoUH in the tower and just few spenseweeds because I didn't use time to farm herbs, just picked all bushes untill they disappeared.

Wow, very nice run for your second attempt. Certainly had some luck with your items - got quite unlucky in the way you died though.

Rather annoying. I used backupped svg. file to resurrect TherapyII. Quitted the game one turn before leaving D. Chain after closing the gate. 53255 turns, 5127724 points, 27 days, 23 hours 25 minutes, exp. lvl 43...

If I just would have had bit more luck on the first try. Its depends on so little.

It's nice no know that this char had what it takes but savescumming just ain't so glamorous.

Yeap, maybe next time...
