Rather annoying. I used backupped svg. file to resurrect TherapyII. Quitted the game one turn before leaving D. Chain after closing the gate. 53255 turns, 5127724 points, 27 days, 23 hours 25 minutes, exp. lvl 43...

If I just would have had bit more luck on the first try. Its depends on so little.

It's nice no know that this char had what it takes but savescumming just ain't so glamorous.

Yeap, maybe next time...

Sandemar: You did a great job with that barbarian.
I am thinking that an orc barbarian would have a
much more difficult time, than a gray elven wizard.
You would have to beat the whole game without the
healing skill. YIKES!

Having no real source of on demand teleportation
would certainly be rough. Even if you save Khelly,
and get the spellbook, you still couldn't use it
because your PC can't learn it. Obtaining the book
and not getting use out of it would drive me nuts.
I won't even mention the life span. UGH!

I wonder why you didn't spend more time harvesting
herbs. I consider herb picking to be one of the
most efficient uses of turns in the game. Maybe THE
most efficient, with the exception of the casino
of coarse.

I was browsing through your flg, and noticed that
you had a number of items in your inventory, that
could have really helped you.

blessed wand of fireballs (10 charges) [3s]
uncursed wand of fire (2 charges) [4s]
uncursed potion of invisibility [4s]
blessed scroll of protection [2s]

I know you were waiting to bless these,
before using them.

I sometimes wonder how many of my own PC's would
live, if only I would remember to use the items
that I already have!


I noticed in your flg, that the Air orb was never
generated, so I take it you never killed Yulgash.
(Actually I thought the chaos orbs were generated
upon entering the orb's level, not upon killing the
boss, so I learned something!) Personally, I don't
consider the air temple to be a place to shy away
from. I think you would have breezed through it.
The extra exp. points may have helped you get some
levels up. In my experience, that helps a lot, to
avoid age attacks.

Gut:Amazing luck like finding a ring shop with ring of regeneration very early helps the healing problem. And a few spenseweeds and orc's natural healing before that.

I hoped for teleportation from wands of wonder but no luck. But with something like P:10(10) bookcasting would have drained a lot of hitpoints and be too costworthy anyways.

There's been much conversation of extensive herb farming being a scummy tactic. I just picked up all herbs in vision at once. Having herbalism helped to get quite a lot herbs anyway.

I tried to avoid all boring and normally as scummy regarded tactics such as gremling bomb and dragon gold. This is how the challenge stayed exciting and interesting the whole time.

Ghost's come trough walls and I had to take a cirkle when trying to find the stairway so they quickly surrounded me. Normal ghosts might have fallen from one zap from the wand of fireballs but ghost lords would have taken at least two and my defences weren't so good even when 'coward'. I weighted my options. Decided to move one pace more but I shouldn't have :)

That !invis could have given me some more time but I think I was too obsessed with that ring of mine on that moment.

And yes, I was really hoping for altar to get some holy water. That's why I passed the air temple. I hoped for altar and greater vault containing something else than undead.

Pretty much I was hoping for luck that I had on my retry with the resurrected char. The level after air temple had an altar and the third one had greater vault full of giant-likes. Gained some exp. levels some artifacts and usefull stuff from there, after that air temple really was a breeze and earth elementals fell from two swings of Vanquisher. Lesser vault on D:47 with fire dragons gave a WoWi with 4 charges. Wished for amulets of death ray resistance, wands of teleportation, potions of booze...and everything went just as planned, no stupid fuss with more stupid ghosts...

Ghosts/lords/kings see in darkness,
not invisible :)

To my knowledge, the only undead that
see invisible are lichs, skeletal
kings, and Griff. At least that's
all I can think of off the top of
my head.

Bah. My Druid named Lithium is mightily stuck. Guess I'll have to let Khelly die. But how do I get rid of Thrundarr without causing a huge mess?

Running around with my latest dwarven wizard. Found an altar on D:8, and decided to sacrifice to gain atleast one crowning gift.

Silfir, iirc Thrundarr can eventually be teleported away from the lever, but it might take pretty many tries.

Molach, check the two kind of scrolls you have most of, they are likely to be scrolls of uncursing and identify, not guaranteed, but usually those scrolls are most common.

Quest finished, though, but dead (nothing lithium-related, ancient red dragon in the arena)

Wand of teleportation isn't that easy to come by when you can't get it in the assassin dungeon.

Doesn't matter anyway. Let a writhing mass of primal chaos waste him. Har har har.

Currently annoyed because my Druid is so weak. He's stuck at 11 Learning and gets ridiculous castings, and no book I read seems to help. Apparently, you need to gain a certain amount of castings before Learning is trained (My current gray elven priest, which I started to test my theory that priests are loads better than druids (they are), seemed to have no problem training his 20 Learning to 22, before the greater daemon drained it back down to 17). I better invest some cash in Garth's training.

I have two questions for you.

1. Why did you allow that druid to live?
To my eyes, any druid that starts out with
a learning score of 11 should be put to
immidiate death. I think my character
'Fluid' started with something like 22.

2. Why are you fighting the greater deamon.
If it is the dwarftown deamon we are talking
about, you should sac him.

1. Because I didn't feel like it? I don't like to scum for perfect stats. I like to think of myself as skilled enough not to need that.

2. It may be safer to sacrifice the daemon, but that doesn't mean I have to do it, does it? Yeah, in retrospect, I'd rather have kept the five points of Learning in exchange for that XP. But again - my character was powerful enough to defeat him in personal combat, so he did. Of course it was also a bit stupid of him. But that's what heroism is about :) (In honesty: I didn't think about that possibility. I've sacrificed him once in my lifetime, with my Druid, and only because I noticed I wouldn't stand a chance fighting him.)

About roll scumming:
Didn't mean to irritate, it's just that I thought you made
an unfair comparison.

That just seems a bit unfair to the druid class, it makes it
seem like they are dumb. Actually, Priests only get 1 point
higher learning than druids. If done the other way around,
with a priest having LE 11 and a druid having LE 22, (which
can certainly happen), the priest would look bad. Rolling
ANY spellcaster with LE 11, in my eyes, would be a great
hinderance to them.

Priests may be better, I don't play them anymore, so I don't
know, but a druid with LE 11 is not standard.

About the deamon:
I thought it made a more sound strategy (for a Lithium man
challenge), to sac the greater deamon, so I shared it. You
don't have to sac him, I just thought you might not have
considered it.

Oh, I see how that could've been misunderstood. 11 Learning is, if you believe the guidebook, what you would actually expect from a dark elven druid on average. But since the numbers there seem to add up to something which is almost always lower than the actual stats, I'm guessing the life story of the character make for overall better stats, so 11 is probably below average. Yet I'd like to point out that I won with a dwarven druid who had 9 Learning at the beginning of the game. It isn't such a great hindrance if you can fight reasonably in melee, like dwarves of all classes that are not primary *arcane* spellcasters usually can.

Priests are better for reasons other than Learning of course. The difference in Learning between the two classes is slight, if it is even there.

I was comparing my two current characters here, the Lithium Druid and my priest. I was comparing how well they did individually. I didn't mean to infer from THAT that Druids are worse then priests. Druids are worse than priests mainly because their class powers suck donkey.

I got it into my head (don't ask me how!)
that your PC was a GRAY elf, not a dark
elf. Yes LE 11 would be a perfecly normal
starting stat for a dark elf. Dark elves
have MANY other things going for them,
to make that LE stat no hinderance.

A GRAY elf, with LE 11 would be sub par.
That's what I was meaning. The way that I
do it is like this, I say that I won't take
a gray elf druid with a LE stat of less
than 17. The reason I do this, is because
I play gray elves for no other reason than
their LE stat.

Gray elf druids start out with a base of 14,
the 'learned' talent at start up makes 15,
and an appropriate birth month (or random
attribute modification) does the rest.

I don't roll scum for (anything like) perfect
stats. I certainly wouldn't actually answer
'attribute questions' regardless of the gain.
In my experienc, it just takes about 2-4 tries
to get 17 or above, and sometimes you get
really lucky.

This Lithium thing is pretty tough... I had a barbarian get to dwarf town only to receive a Trollish Beserker as my first quest... Not being able to ID stuff without trying it first is a pain when you have so little stuff to begin with... I think the barb died to a chaos night below dwarf town....

Then I had a good looking gnomish wizard who also couldn't id stuff, due to the 3 rivers above dwarf town in the CoC... 3 rivers. All my scrolls were drowned, all my weapons and metal amour was rusty, but there was no where else to go... Kinda frustrating. Damn gnomes can't even swim... Think a spider factory got him in the big room...

Am trying gnomish mindcrafters now - managed to get one across the wilderness, but died due to the CoC split vault turning out to be mixed...

I had a nice dark elven ranger for a while too, but he had really sad toughness, and at full health and PC level 9, died an instant death to a stone block trap.

ADOM eh? Tsk.

I'm trying another one, and he looks like he turned out well. Started a random race/class just for fun. Trollish farmer :).

Highlights:

  • Dwarven smith killed by greater demon. Leaves behind anvil and eternium warhammer....eternium warhammer of penetration. Needless to say, switched to club/maces after that.
  • Read my SoFS on DH:2, got a greater earth elemental. Named him fluffy and let him kill dwarftown, including elder. (Come to think of it, I never got his reward. Don't need it, though)
  • Had done some digging for gems and ore. Pickaxe lost to trap. After clearing graveyard I finally find another one ... and find out it is the artifact pickaxe. Just random drop by random mob. Good stuff.


Lowlights:

  • Got crowned with lightning immunity (okay, but would rather have fire) and crappy Artifact sling.


About to tackle fire temple now, which I think will make or break the character. Only one fireproof blanket, might get ugly. Will melee the wyrm, use water orb for healing. Hope my penetrating weapon will finish him quickly.

What about tomb of the high kings? And if you cant get the ring how you are supposed to deal with the eternal guardian? Kill it? Is it part of the challenge or what?

Update to my last post (and answer to question above):
DIED to eternal guardian. I had gotten the stiff muscles corruption and could not get past him. I tried hitting and then running past to the stairs, but his clone always spawned before I could reach them. I had no teleporting (only random). I tried to have a pet attack, but they died before I could order them to escape. I did manage to kill 6 guardians, getting many levels, but there was no getting past. Finally died to a bunch of criticals.

Question: How did I kill 6 guardians in melee? Also I always had TWO of them chasing me at the same time.

Alarm trap on the level. One would walk on it, and they would fight each other with great effort. The victor was then (somewhat) easier to finish off

I sometimes like to kill the EG, for the exp. points,
but I never try it with a class that has the faster
movement class powers. Likewise, if I'm wearing 7lb's,
I take them off. They screw with the energy/speed
movement system, and just get me killed. With a PC
that has slightly better than average speed (and no
'stiff muscles' corruption), killing him is quite
safe.

Just close and lock the door, then attack the EG
while standing to his left (because he likes to be on
the right). Once he is next to you, standing in the
9 direction, just repeatedly press the 7 and 3 keys.
He will follow you as you move in the 7 and 3
directions, never hitting you, and losing in the
energy/speed game all the while. Soon, you will
move, and he will not. Just count the number of
moves it takes to 'wear him out'.

Press the 5 key, so that he comes to stand next to
you again. Again move in the 7 and 3 directions as
you count to yourself, and when you get to the
right number, whack him (poisoning your weapon
first, is a HUGE advantage).

Don't rely on your original movement count though,
because hitting takes less energy than moving,
thus ruining the pattern. So after hitting, you
have to count the movements again, to see how
many movements are needed, for another safe hit.
If you are careful, and memorize the patterns
well, you can kill many incarnations safely.

It is important to note, that every EG generated,
will have different patterns, and eventually you
will not be able to outrun them. Also, if your
speed status changes in the middle of the fight,
for satiation reasons, it will mess with the
pattern.


About the alarm trap, I never thought of that,
but it sounds really useful. I wonder if the
guardian that was killed by the other, counts
on the 'incarnation counter'. If so, then if
you killed six, it wasn't the seventh guardian
that killed you, but the fourteenth! YIKES!
