I just ran into a room full of a ton of vampires which have drained all my stats. How to I get them back? Do I just wait?

Your stats won't regenerate or anything. You must retrain them using other methods. (Strength: walk around while Strained or Strained! Toughness and willpower: morgia roots, dexterity: moss patches of mareilon, mana: spellcasting etc.)

Sorry, you're fucked. That'll teach you a lesson about DV being more important then PV.
Or something.

We all faced our first mass stat draining. And the second. And third...
This is ADOM; either be a masochist or don't play it ;)

Yeah, part of becoming an ADOM veteran is remembering which monsters drain stats and adjusting your tactics. Some, light Wights and Shadows, need to get right next to you and land a hit to drain your stats so avoiding melee range or having good defense is a good idea. Others, like Minotaur Mages and Lich Kings/Emperor Liches and Greater Demons, can cast a spell that decreases your stats, so avoiding them altogether or killing them ASAP is advisable.

Losing a few points of stat is not the end of the world, with time and resources and technique, you can increase them to their former values and beyond. It can be VERY demoralizing though.

A horrible stat draining experience of mine: I had a Dwarven Barbarian go from neutral to chaotic digging up graves, this caused him to become doomed, cursed, fallen champion. As if that weren't bad enough, a HORDE of specters got summoned all around me. I didn't know at the time I was doomed or cursed, and my excellent DV/PV was bypassed by the specters due to that, multiple hits causing my strength to decrease from the mid twenties into the teens. Distraught, I quit the character. Lesson Learned.

The "nice" thing about draining is that when you're killed by a draining attack, you're listed not as "killed by x", but as "turned into x".

Vampire or Wraith is cool, but one of my chars got "turned into a Quasit". It's also possible to become a Living Wall or a Wall Beast. :D

I just went from Str 32 to 20, and about the same in toughness. I would have run away earlier, but I though it was a temporary effect.

that's not too bad, since you can scum the str with starvation "training" and toughness does not really matter after mid game.

20 is high enough for most purposes. Even a primary melee fighting class will do good with that.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Herbs will get your toughness back to 30, the strength loss sucks, though. Just hang on till you get to the casino and you can train your strength with, say, 100 million gold. That ought to get it up again to something decent :)
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

This has broken my will to play ADOM. I have no doubt I'll come crawling back soon though. ADOM is like an abusive relationship you keep going back to.

/sigh
