Hey I need some advice. Currently playing a High Elven wizard, and I'm having some reaally tough time with the late game.

Tl;Dr much? Go see the bottom for the shorter version!

Right now I am nearing the end game parts, and have beaten all of the temples besides the mana temple.

ToEF: No problem at all my Karmic Dragon took care of most of the elemental monsters, and left the Wrym to me which made for easy pickings. Though I did loose the Dragon when it turned on me in the Animated forest.

Water Temple: So mentioned earlier I had no dragon by this point. I had to drop most of my items because elfs or wizards are not trained to swim ( 4000+ stone burden if I remember correctly). I already had tower eternium sheild by this point, and elfs usually have amazing dexterity later in the game so absolutly no trouble at all! I pretty much used fireball for this whole temple.

Air Temple: For this bit I had to use some Pious Points, though not to brag, (but by now my PC is at level thirty one with three hundred, and three HP, not sure if thats so common ;-) right at that point though I had two hundred, and fifty seven hp). The only trouble here was having useful item burn up or be destroyed, so yes I left them behind, and sacraficed 200000 gold pieces before I took on this temple. So a bit toubelsome when monsters delt criticles.

Earth Temple: I will admit, no problem at all! By this point I had learned acid ball, ice ball, and fire ball which were all trained to extremely dangerous levels. Not a big deal, I also converted the alter to L, took 150000 gold to do so, and I also made a huge mistake while I was doing so, sacraficed all my 3000000+ gold actcidently. So I have a really huge problem right now, damn extended commands.

So now here I am. At the mana temple, and although I have a good amount of HP, and 129 DV when set to coward, 56PV if anyone cares, oh yeah PP at 356. My huge problem now, is that I have a 198 Knowledge value for acid ball no books, one fireball book left, 256KV for fireball, and by now I had forgotten Iceball, and have no books for it left.

As you can see it is impossible for me to defeat this temple, and the game! Without any good magic since I do not have any powerful melee attacks, and I had already used all of SoCR, (argh have to admit I had no knowdedge of knowing how to use these, and wasted ten in my adventures, before realizing how to use them, I have one left). So it is day 87, and I don't want my character to become a writhring mass of chaos, and I am sick of seeing my characters die, seventy something characters in the High scores.

So I need advice on these things.

-A quick way to get ball spell books.
-A strategy to avoid heavy corruptions.
-Some way to earn gold for my god, (I have seen gems work)
-And all somehow to be done before the nintey day limit. On day 86 I have 7LB, blessed.

Don't worry about the 90 day limit, it's not that bad. There is a good solution to several of your problems: The Library. You can get there through the Rift, and it will contain one of every spellbook in the game for a wizard. There'll be a lot of powerful monsters there, but you should be able to handle it. If you have stealth of 100 and spend over 2000 turns in the library without 'C'hatting (easily done whilst killing the monsters and reading hte spellbooks) then the librarian there will give you a weird tome, which you can take to the mad minstrel in exchange for several SoCRs.

Relying on spells for the Mana Temple has its own problems though. Hopefully you have plenty of scrolls and crystals of power? And death ray resistance? There is an alternative - if you wear only fireproof items and have fire immunity and use some offensive alchemy (apply alchemy on any two herbs) then you can make free fireballs that will wipe out everyone but the Archmage in the temple (which you can then finish off with acid ball or humanoid slaying ammo).

Have you done the unicorn quest?
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

Christdammit, ninja'd! Oh well, still gonna post this as I wrote it...

Let me think...

One thing's for sure, any way to get ball spell books is highly likely to get you over the 90 day limit. Don't worry, that mark doesn't hit as hard as you think at first. I'll talk about corruptions later.

The quickest way to get ball spell books, by far, is wishing for them! The next best thing is probably a visit to the Library, but seeing your scroll of chaos resistance count you've probably been there already. Apart from these two things... Spellbook shop restock? Casino restock? Killing monsters in the ID? Personally, I don't even think you need those books to defeat the Mana Temple. It's not impossible.

You're a wizard. 198 points of knowledge in Acid Ball isn't much, but should be enough to cast maybe 50 of 'em. More than enough to defeat Nuurag-Vaarn. Against the other monsters in there, I believe normal bolt spells will be enough. The magebane eyes are gonna squeeze you dry, though. You can also use Magic Missile for a lot of things (including and not restricted to killing archmages and balors), as there are no monsters resistant to it. It needs about 20 effectivity to be remotely reliable against the most powerful monsters, but Magic Missile will kill everything... eventually. The Mana temple is always a messy affair, and it's designed to be an exceptional challenge for spellcasting types.

How well do you fare in melee? What weapon do you use? If it's polearms (with your high DV, I'm inclined to believe you are well skilled at fighting with them - is it an eternium spear, perchance?), it might be a very good idea to obtain the rune-covered trident - it will help a lot against the balors on D:50. Bashing the Chaos creatures in D:50 doesn't require a uberpowerful weapon for a level 33 wizard usually, and the rune-covered trident is certainly up to the task. The only thing you may have to do before you get it after telling Blup about his mother (who you hopefully haven't killed) is level up to 36. That shouldn't be too hard, just hang about a bit and slay some evildoers.

(Before you send Blup to his mummy, have you fed him with some carrot juice already? Try it! If I've read the description of your Water Temple adventures correctly, you should be surprised!)

How trained are you in bows and crossbows? Do you have humanoid slaying ammo? If you don't want or can't use Acid Balls to eliminate Nuurag-Vaarn, humanoid slaying ammo is the next best way. It might be wise to train your weapon skill a bit against easy opponents if it's still at 3 or lower.

I think your HP count is a bit low. How high is your toughness? Can you still increase it with herbs? If not, maybe you should invest money in training with Garth. It doesn't sound too bad, though. My level 43 gray elven priest has currently 606 HP, but his Toughness is 36. If you got through melee in the Air Temple, you should be fine. DV and PV is excellent, at least in my eyes. I feel safe even with lower values.

Getting money is pretty easy if you use the casino for it! Just play at the 24 pieces slot machine, hold down the space bar or place a heavy object on it, watch some TV for a while and come back. If you run out of money, you've either started to play with very few (which might you leave with nothing if you lose the first couple of games) or you've run out of your initial money. No sweat, just pick up the money you've won and play with that. A blessed girdle of greed is a necessity, but having carried 3000000 gold pieces (how the fucking hell did you get this many without the casion?!) you probably know that already. Oh, and you can simply teleport away the bloke that blocks the stairs down. Use the money to train with Garth and/or obtain divine favour, if that really is your only means of effective Healing - all out of potions of extra and ultra healing, huh? It's a good idea in any case, as the gods can also replenish your power points - veeery useful in the Mana temple! Out of curiosity, do you have a ring of regeneration? Those rock!

Now, to the alleged corruption problem: How corrupted are you? If you've only got one scroll of chaos resistance left (I do hope it's blessed or you have holy water) you should save that one in case you get stuck with a horrible corruption, like stiffened muscles or somesuch. (Mana battery might actually be nice because it lowers spell cost and maybe even increases PP regeneration... but you should remove it if you have only one wand of destruction on you.) Apart from that, heavy corruption is mainly avoided by not hanging around doing nothing in corrupting regions needlessly (read spellbooks in the wilderness) and by not walking into hordes of monsters with corrupting attacks. Background corruption is still low for you, so no worries. Should still be easily doable if you're still uncorrupted or have maybe three or four. Remember, you can be corrupted 18 times. The 19th time will be your last.

Two very smart things to do to avoid needless corruption: Refrain from exploring the highly corrupting, but otherwise uninteresting levels (lower parts of U, D:45-47) more than is necessary. Yes, you might miss some items, but it's not worth traversing the entire level just to clear that one undiscovered spot. And second, if you travel through levels you've already explored, use the Teleport spell! You're bound to have found a spellbook or more of that, and you probably have more than enough castings to last you a lifetime of stair-hopping.

If you do already have corruption problems, like you already have more than ten corruptions or something, you should consider talking to Guth'Alak in Terinyo to get the quest with the unicorns. If you need Yrruir's reward to win, it can't be helped. You can spend the game after closing the gate looking for more scrolls to clear you completely of corruption. Since there is no background corruption anymore, it's only a matter of time. Use reward of the unicorn wisely - it should be either the last thing you do before leaving the Chain as a winner, or the last thing you do before diving down to meet your fate.

Okay, I think I've said all for the moment. It would be nice to hear some more about your situation, though, especially considering melee and missile weaponry and current corruption state.

EDIT: Funny how Darren and I gave the same advice on some topics :) Offensive alchemy is a very effective, if somewhat cheap method - I've never used it, so I didn't think of it at first.

Oh, and in the name of all that is holy, don't forget that death ray resistance. You can forget the confusion resistance (NOT RECOMMENDED, I did it once and succeeded anyway but it sucked hard to get your stats eaten away like pizza), you can forget the light source (NOT RECOMMENDED EITHER), but forgetting the death ray resistance is something you must not EVER do EVER.

Wizards are perfectly capable of beating the
game without ball spells. Magic missile for D:50.
As for the Archmage, use potions of blindness
and confusion to beat him. If you have acid balls,
that is great, if you don't, just inflict damage
with weapons and missiles. It may take a while,
but you should have many potions of blindness
(you even have a recipe for them). Cursed potions
of invisibility have the same effect.

You can also cast spells out of your HP. if the
magebane eyes are getting you down. If you lose
a Mana point, it won't be the end of the world.
May I recommend glancing through the wizard guide
thread on this forum :)

It is possible to kill the Archmage, without
having death ray resistance, it's just highly
dangerous. One wrong move and your toast.

Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

I'd suggest getting some extra levels, and getting your toughness higher with morgia and sickness. I have no idea how you've managed to get this far in the game with a wizard and yet have so little mana... Have you been writing scrolls of something? Some extra levels would be nice - have you cleared all the Earth temple? Have there been any greater vaults?

For the Archmage, well, you have one very good solution - arrows of slaying. I'd recommend blessing them. It only takes three hits to kill the archmage - the trouble is just getting a clear shot and getting them to hit. And make sure you wear that amulet of death ray resistance!

5 greater daemons


See those guys? Apparently they loooveed to drain mana stats, and I somehow keep lossing my mana when it goes over twenty-eight. It constantly fluctuates.

On the levels, I do think I have cleared out the temples of *most* monsters, fire temple my dragon was able to take out some rooms of bad guys, water no exp rich monsters left, air I left the grues to wander, and earth the earthen monsters just went through the walls which made things quick, no I don't think the ChAoS servents are worth taking out. I also went to through two greater vaults of black dragons hence the wryms.

Take out the grues on D48 - they can be worth some good xp. Otherwise you can try and make do as is, though it won't be optimal.

How about reading all those books? There's even Improved Fireball in there! Drink that potion of boost learning and read yourselves some books in a quiet wilderness square!

Wondering why you would choose a dagger of death over Rolf's Companion. Were you in the process of toughness training with morgia?

And generally, I think what you have there is more than enough to win the game, levels or not. You shouldn't waste too much time trying to get much higher. Just make sure you get the rune-covered trident at some point, maybe after slaying Nuurag-Vaarn. Considering you don't have any more scrolls of chaos resistance and will pass day 90 soon.

You've got eight arrows of humanoid slaying and two of normal slaying... Well, that should be enough with your weapon skill. Lure the Archmage into the Corridor while killing the magedoom eyes with wands. Once PP regeneration resumes at a steady rate, use Magic Missiles to kill more of the magedoom eyes far away. You're sturdy enough to ignore the chaos servants hitting you for some time, though you might have to stop and use healing spells or spenseweed.

Generally, simply cast Magic Missile after Magic Missile, alternating with hands-on use of Rolf's Companion to preserve PP (bless scrolls of power beforehand for an extra boost now, where it counts), until Nuurag-Vaarn shows up. Retreat into the corridor. Either throw a potion of blindness or a cursed one of invisibility at him or use that wand of paralyzation you have, switch to berserk, and shoot shoot shoot. Hit him with your wand of poison some times if you're feeling mean. If he's still alive, finish him off with your remaining Acid Balls.

D:50 is a piece of cake with two wands of destruction and teleportation spell, and maybe even the rune-covered trident after one or two balors killed (though your polearm skill isn't very high). Your teleportation spell knowledge is at 90, but you have eleven teleports from the wands and one from a scroll, and you have boost mana to recharge the wands if need be.

He's at two corruptions on about day 90 and out of SoCR. It's not an acute problem, but without means of corruption removal he can't get rid of the bad ones anymore. It's not something that can't be dealt with, however.

Did you already clear the bug temple? With careful playing and bolt spells (the wand of fireballs for the initial stair descent) it should be easy to get the three SoCR while gaining only one corruption or so.

Stairhopping in the ID is a boring but safe way of getting spellbooks. Find the downstairs on ID:1, constantly go up&down, don't bother exploring the levels, just pick something up if it happens to be lying there. Keep a look out for special room messages: quaff a carrot juice potion everytime a carrot smelling room comes up.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Right, so I am just going to review the suggestions.

-Drink my boot learning potions, and read the last of my ball books.
-Use alchemy, wands, and Blessed AoS on the mana temple. While at the same time using magic missle.
-Bring Blessed SoP, and GoP with me.

I should also try.
-Exploiting ID
-Carefully go through the Bug infested temple
-Going through the last of the Grues.
-And increasing my toughness.
-Also try going to the Sinister library, not that it should take atleast twenty days to do so.

Ok before I try this I want to make sure if this is the best strategy.

Well the library is indeed the place to go for spellbooks, but seeing as you lack the two corruptions you need for still not very safe but allegedly safer rift negotiation, make sure you only take unbreakable stuff (artifacts), junk, food and climbing sets (unstacked if possible), and more than $ 50000 with you as you go.

Even unburdened, with the right corruptions, wearing ankh, every time I go to the library, I fall.
Do not take your arrows of slaying, your potion of uselessness, or anything uber valuable with you.

I see you only have one climbing set. Definitely do not go to library before finding enough gold to buy another one from the ratling trader on the bottom level (thats what the 50 grand is for above).

Do go to the library though, despite the fall danger, its a cool place for a wizard to hang out, and every spell book and 5 cursed scrolls of chaos resistance to shake sticks at, is awesome.

Or simply get more climbing sets. Depending on where you've gotten your one (I'd wager the pyramid), there should still be another in the gremlin cave.

I actually have four climbing sets, counting the one I currently have with me.

Allright so the ninty day limit is no problem so long as I do not waste my time trying to explore everyroom, just get in kill, and get out.

Another thing you could do is dig up all "great treasures are buried here" -labeled graves in the dwarven graveyard and the smaller one in CoC if you haven't already. That should give you some more good stuff. Just be careful of the (emperor/king/master)liches sleeping in the graves.

If at all possible, wear a blessed amulet of balance when digging the grave to minimize the alignment drop and a blessed one of law when not doing the digging. You could also feed stomafillia to beggars in Lawinotheil when digging up the graves in the dwarven graveyard.

Do the library. It will give you the SOCR you need, and the spell books, and experience.
Then follow the following guaranteed method for the mana temple.

Lure Nuran V out into the corridor. Create a door. Lock it, he will stand on the other side without doing anything. Acid ball until your exp takes a big jump. Open the door, collect the Orb. Proceed to lvl 50. Easy.

After much time I have manged to get my PC's climbing skill to 99, yes ninty freaking nine. I used my Blessed CoK, and somehow got this close with six skill upgrades, I just hope it increase naturally soon.

On the bright side I manged to gain all of the experience needed by walking in the wilderness, lots of Black Unicorns, Ogre armies, and the [color] Dragon here, and there.

To quickly explain what I have done.

-Got out of CoC
-Manged to amass *some* of my lost gold.
-Blup, (name mistake?) quest.
-Greater White Unicorn quest.
-Raided some caves, temples, and dungeons. Ok not the temples, I am too afraid of the corruption, I already got the poison hand corruption, damn!
-Lost my sweet girdle to a Ogre Emperor.
-*Almost* died three times.
-Havn't done the Bug infested temple, I may not to be honest with you, never, maybe I don't know.
-And Reached level thirty three.

I may take that offer on the grave robbing, though I am a messiah! Not an avatar, not even going to try.

OH! I also seem to get my PP back when I pray, for some reason I heard that gods do not do this.

Training with Yergius would be mighty pointless at skill level 99! Just climb a bunch of times and try to level up while waiting for the skill increase.

What is/was the consensus on climbing trees? Does it train climbing? That might be a good way to train it. If not, and you're not afraid to waste game time, just take trips around the mountains in the wilderness and have fun munching on the corpses of all the giants you meet. Also be very careful so that no red dragon will accidentally double your gold.

Climbing trees does not train climbing. Over 4000 turns spent climbing trees, nothing else done, except eating a few times. And starving in the end.
Got increases for healing (from the monday hp loss), listening (from munxip, exchanged gold for food), but no change for climbing.

Easy to check it yourself - generate a human druid, enter a wilderness square, get bloated and put a heavy object on your "a" key.

I seem to remember that falling in and then getting out of pits trains climbing. So if you can take the fall, just do that. Can even dig a hole somewhere non-corrupting too.
