>A PC that has the
>food preservation skill should get a DS corpse
>long before even hitting dwarftown.

Uh, really? I see a corpse maybe once in a year at most. Dark sages are fairly rare as is - their corpses even rarer. But you raise a fair point, literacy is certainly possible - one could scum ID for a dark sage even. Hmm, damn... If this guy dies I've totally got to try that next. Can't let that artifact slip me by!

Actually, wait, haha, what am I thinking... If I get literacy before the dwarven quest I miss out on that artifact. And like I said, I'm not getting to level 50 in the ID without scrolls. So that option's completely out.

>I can second that! I think that's one challenge
>I will never try.

I imagine it would be rather easy actually. Only problem is getting TCtrl (you could get a friendly blink dog to summon on a hostile and hope for a corpse - I actually got one that way with a lawful once... not sure if eating a blink dog corpse is unlawful though). You'd have to treat all dwarves, blink dogs and unicorns like cats, which is only really a problem when they're hostile (such as dwarves in the arena, or hostile threat rooms). It conflicts with this challenge though since several artifacts require chaotic deeds. I'm also not playing a bloody thief without pickpocketing immensely and stealing from every shop in the game. I've an idea to do a "Rolf challenge" some time though - play a dwarven paladin called Rolf, get his two artifacts, complete all lawful quests, and get the platinum girdle. Been fairly boring each time I've tried it though.

>Unlimited wishes = boring to me. I think a
>challenge game should still FEEL like an ADOM
>game, just harder.

Yup! I'd only do it for testing purposes, or maybe going for archmage after I've already finished most of the game (and maybe trying for a Gozer-like score). Otherwise, well, what's the point really? Might as well play some action game with blood-filled graphics to get your kicks - would certainly require much less initial effort.

>A chaos knight killed on ID level 9 will just
>drop a pick axe, but kill one on level 30 and
>you have a great shot at eternium helmets,
>medium shields, long swords (very nice with the
>right prefix), armor, and thick gauntlets.

Nope, nope, nope. A dwarven chaos knight will likely drop a pick axe or a wand of digging. They never drop eternium gear (except out of luck). A real chaos knight will likely drop eternium gear wherever he is. Seen it happen on ID20 (threat rooms of them are actually quite likely round there I've found with Iron Man attempts, though I've never scummed for them) and seen it happen in the Wilderness (which is DL 5). Eternium plate mail is DL 36 I'll point out. In general a monster with guaranteed drops will make them anywhere, but regular drops in the ID correspond to the 1/3rd danger level rule. The troll I had that spent so much time in the ID? Never found anything eternium. Anything. And that was after slaughtering thousands of bloody creatures on I43/44, including many greater dragons and wyrms. Best thing he ever found was a pair of SLBs (that got destroyed) - everything else was mostly junk.

> I miss out on that artifact.

Could you delay the dwarf quests until exp.
level 50? If so, you could eat a DS corpse
early to enjoy literacy for the whole game,
then eat a cursed one to gain illiteracy
before completing the first quest. It would
mean doing without a free inventory ID, a
fireball wand, and the ogre cave, but they
aren't so great anyway.

Come to think about it, you can get the
artifact potion with any PC. Just delay
completing the first dwarf quest until exp.
level 50. Eat a cursed DS corpse, get the
potion and enjoy.

They both look like lower case purple 'h's,
so I confuse them. The theory still holds
though, I have gotten much eternium gear in
the ID from chaos knights. I have also gotten
artifacts, including Nature's Companion from
red dragon threat rooms.

Hear something funny? NEVER EVER has a chaos knight dropped anything but it's corpse and gloves :P

Bwaha, you genius! Does a cursed dark sage remove literacy whatever its value, or does it have to be low enough? I'm gonna put off shoving points into literacy and keep an eye out for DS corpses now... Potion of Lit brings the guaranteed total up to 47! (and that by the way is another artifact that is mutually exclusive with the platinum girdle)

True enough - if I run into chaos knights I'll hope for the best. I don't want any artifacts though :P (which means I'll actually be doing minimal pickpocketing in the ID - hopefully I'll pickpocket BoW, Preserver and Whirlwind after my precrown adventures)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it removes it, even
if it's at 100. I seem to recall eating a DS
corpse with a wizard, and becoming illiterate.
I believe all wizards start with literacy at 100.

I'd like to point out that the best result for the most artifacts generated is at least 50:

that it won't take much luck to generate 4 random

Ooh, missed that one somehow. Will comb through the results again in case there's others I've missed. Wish the person gave some better detail in his post... But looking at the flg it's obvious he used piety abuse and a wish engine. Ugh! Looking through he somehow managed to get True Strength along with 17 random artifacts (I assume 1 crowning, maybe 12 or 13 precrowns, 1 uselessness and others random), the pyramid pair and the minotaur axe. No Literacy potion though. It will be beaten...

I must ask, am I right to look down on piety abusers and wish engineers when I'm abusing dragon gold doubling? I know it's all scummy tactics, but piety abuse really gets under my skin...

Dead. Greater earth elemental in a mixed tension room on I37 brought me down to -2 HP with two consecutive criticals that bypassed PV. Stupid really - I should have backed off and used construct slaying ammo (like I did with a threat room of diamond golems a couple of levels above). Also annoying since in the same threat room were 2 greater molochs - they would have easily skyrocketed my levels up.

Oh well. Will come back to this again later...

-2 HP's really hurts. When the margins are that
small, anything could make a difference. The
'hardy' talent gives 3 HP's! Earth elementals are
difficult to 'backpedal attack' anyway. They can
move through walls, and you can't, for every
turn you have to make around walls, they get
to regen a little more. Very annoying monsters.
Good pets though.

> I must ask, am I right to look down on
> piety abusers and wish engineers when
> I'm abusing dragon gold doubling?

I'm sure that piety looping is a bug. If one
considers using the piety looping bug, they
should just save time, and use a memory editor.
That's what I used to do, and it worked fine
for me, while I was enjoying that kind of stuff.
Would a piety abused game still feel like an
ADOM game, or would it feel like exploration
mode?

I feel kind of the same way about wish engines.
I think that unlimited wishes = exploration mode.
Fun, but ultimately meaningless (to me anyway).

I'm not sure if dragon gold doubling is a bug
or not. Regardless, the way you would be using
it, doesn't equal exploration mode in my book.

Unlimited wishes is not a bug, just a tactic that takes most of the challenge out of the game. If all you care is win while playing by the rules, the wish engine is perfectly fine.

Piety abuse, being a blatant bug exploit, is some levels below dragon gold doubling in my book (which I suspect not to be a bug, but a poorly thought out feature, and carries at least some degree of risk, what with the dragons melting the gold and all), so I think you're justified looking down on it from where you're standing...

Wish engine means dipping a heap of rings
(probably 19) into blessed potions of exchange.
If the danger level of the dungeon you are on is
8 or greater, they will eventually change into
rings of djinni summoning. Bless them, then you
have 19 wishes.

The 'engine' part of the whole thing, is that
you use your wishes for more potions of exchange.
That way you can continue dipping/wishing until
your fingerprints wear off.

A man walks up a hill. When reaching the top he sees a man getting out of an elevator. Man says: "dude, you're not doing it right", to which the man with the elevator replies: "yes I am, my way is just bit easier and less time-consuming". Behind them a man on a donkey emerges and asks: "what about me, am I in the right?". The first man thinks about it and says: "well, I guess you're alright, but I still disapprove a bit of your means". Yet again a man emerges, this time it's a man in car: "what about me, don't tell me I drove up here for nothing?" First man says: "well, it's on the very edge, but I guess it is acceptable". The man with the elevator gets angry and asks: "why, if that's alright, then I can see no harm in my way either - a car is just a few minutes faster than my elevator". First man replies: "yes, but it's also about the work you put into it". The man with the donkey cuts in and says: "well, I didn't put much work into it, I just sat on my donkey". Bickering ensues until they are interrupted by a man lying at their feet. He breathes heavily and seems utterly tired. The men ask him if he is alright, to which the man replies: "I just crawled up this hill on all four; hogtied, naked and blinfolded, and I think you're all bloody cheaters!"

Hahaha, nice story Sulangatori.

I do think dragon gold doubling is a bug. I'm pretty damn certain of it in fact. It's odd that it only affects dragons (and not fairy dragons) but it must have something to do with the fact that the dragons that do double always drop a certain amount of gold. It's easily explained as a bug - it's not easily explained as a feature. It's also quite safe if done properly (same with piety abuse).

However, for this challenge I'm just using it for piety - nothing else. My first few precrowns are normally with livesacs or herbs (so I have high piety and Fate Smiles anyway) - the gold is to get the full 15 artifacts. I think I'll add an additional restriction from now on though - I will only use the gold for piety *after* getting to level 50 (instead of getting some extra early artifacts to help with ID dives). That way it's the same as using the casino. I was inspired to do this challenge by Harkila, who went to the casino with minimum artifacts generated, got to level 47 and used casino gold for many precrowns (do a search of RGRA for pyramid tradeoff). Using the dragon gold as an alternative to the casino only after getting to L50 seems a little fairer to me...

Darren, if you think that the dragon gold doubling is a bug, and you only use the gold for sacrificing to get piety, wouldn't you just be better off simply (ab)using the piety wrap-around bug? You'd probably only have to do it once and the 2 000 000 000 piety would be enough for the rest of the game.

Thinking about it another way, if your not going for piety in the early game, why not use the casino? Isn't it faster and easier, just weigh down the enter key? And you'd have your conscience clean not having taking advantage of any bugs in the game, if that sort of thing is important to you.

Also, sorry to hear about that -2hp death, fate surely didn't smile upon you that time now did it :( This is quite an interesting challenge and one that I might try too one day..

BTW, I think the dragon gold doubling is a bug too. I don't understand how it could be a feature.

Sulangatori, that was quite funny :)

Casino is not an option because it'd mean generating artifacts on the way. And piety abuse seems worse than dragon gold doubling to me - just a personal thing (partly stems from the fact that the bug was discovered through code-diving, whilst dragon gold was only noticed through normal play).

I wonder exactly WHEN the dragon gold doubling
(bug?) was discovered. If it was discovered before
ADOM 1.1.1. was released, I don't think it would
be a bug. That seems like the kind of bug that
would have a high priority of being fixed, because
of it's huge impact on the game.

D:50 certainly means you've generated the Si and Moon Sickle and whatnot, so why not just use the casino? :) Won't risk melting all your hard-earned gold either.

I meant character level 50, not D50.

I want 15 precrowns - the whole damned set, and as many other guaranteed artifacts as I can get. Getting to the casino means generating the si, moon sickle, fire orb, whatever other random artifacts, and likely getting Khelly killed (so no trident). I also want the experience of generating all the game areas as a level 50 character (which is supposed to have some interesting effects).

I seem to recall the last two times I ate a status unknown DS corpse I had my literacy reduced by some number which was not very much - 10-20 literacy points maybe? So unless you manage to avoid achieving 100 literacy by time you are level 50, you might need several corpses to swith your literacy off.

Switching literacy off with dark sage corpses will not make you illiterate. You will get Literacy at 0, which will make you unable to read things, but a single skill advance will remedy it. You will not get the potion of literacy in any case.

you can get is literacy at zero, not
illiterate, and it takes many DS

If one wants the potion of literacy,
you have to play an illiterate PC,

worth fooling with.
