Playing my first character here to really get anywhere in ADOM, a Dwarven Priest LVL12.

Did druid quest (keethrax was strangely a wimp, considering it was the first quest i did...dodged every single spell he threw at me), Hotzenplotz quest for Amulet of Order, and that's basically it. Been trying to find something to give me invisibility to increase my chance of success in getting through the small cave to the mountain village (i have a potion, but im afraid its not enough). Any advice on what to do now?

Go to the ID. Hanging around level 1-2 should give you plenty of spellbooks, priests tend to find a lot of them. If you want you can hang around in level 8-9 instead, more challenge and somewhat better equipment to be found and more exp. But it will not help with the books.

You immdiate goals are getting basic resistances (fire, poison at least), teleport control and lost of spells. Invisibility, one healing spell and several attack spells should see you through a lot. Just remember to train melee as well, preferably polearms.

You will probably find more invisibility potions if you don't find the invisibility book(or TP control + TPbook), so you can do the trip to HMV which is also very rich in rewards - herbs foremost.

As a priest, you want the spell "Ethereal Bridge". This is the divine equivalent of teleport. That should get you through the SMC.

My tactic for a priest (for anybody, actually) is to take the SMC _before_ level 6. The monsters are still manageable, then.

Well, i already have intrinsic fire resistance from a fire beetle corpse, 2 rings of fire resistance, 2 rings of stun resistance, tons of spells (no tp or invis though). I have neutralize poison and cure disease spells, but no poison resist yet. Been using a dagger that I found, a +0, 5d3+8 Orcish Dagger of Destruction...oh yea, and i have cold resist from the Amulet of Cold Heart...I'm thinking I'll try some more ID farming then and try to make it through to HMV if i get tp and control or invis, otw, i may just have to go do something else before i go to they pyramid, since i just reached lvl13. What lvl should i get to before i go there? I think its 16-17, but im not sure. Do you recommend going into the CoC some before then?

Well the pyramid closes when you reach lvl 17, so definately go before that. It might be useful to make a trip to CoC, if you're not going for precrowns definately visit the dwarftown, check the shop for possibly nice items and get the random monster quest and such. Also the big room has herbs if you haven't any yet.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

I guess one more update if anybody has anything else to say...decided to go ahead and do Puppy caves, found my first altar of the game, finally managed to get rid of the cursed intrinsic i got at early on (ugh, i dont even know how), precrowning soon...still haven't got a single good piece of body armor, or teleport, or invisibility, but i have every other spell under the sun (no Strength of Atlas...i'm basically burdened all the time), sadly no ball spells yet either. I think I'll try and get PreCrowning with the altar and then start doing some CoC, heading back out at lvl16 to challenge the pyramid...here's hoping i don't do something stupid!

If you have teleport control, from a blink dog
corpse or ring/amulet, you can get the TP wand
from the VDDL. I highly advise getting a means
of TP, as soon as possible. This can be a life
saver, and also opens the door for an early
darkforge raid.

If you need more details, you can get them from
the wizard guide thread. I also made a 'darkforge
raid' demo, and posted it's link on a thread here
a few months ago.

You also need a wand or a scroll of item detection or magic mapping, unless you want to spend infinite time there.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

With a nice array of spells and 7lbs you should be unlucky to not be able to run through the SMC. It is still lower danger level than DH. Coward helps a bit. If you have magic mapping (spell or one blessed scroll) it should be doable. Run around monster in rooms, use spells in corridor while in coward, should be doable.

At any rate, if you havent already, enter it (and leave) to generate monsters before levelling up more. If you already did, passing through should be easy. The UD down to HMV should probably grant you some herbs. Along with nice treasure-filled vaults. Just don't reach level 17, run away if you get close.

Well, decided to come again, thx for the advice, its helped. So far, so good...been backing up my guy in case of crash (lots o' thunder storms in my area lately), but haven't died, to my joy. Got teleport control from a pool, found a cloak on invis, got my 7lb blessed, beat the pyramid (was very easy, except that i could barely hurt the mummy leader), got lots of different resists with 2 rings of FR and 1 ring of CR, Robes of Resistance (precrown, altar on cavernous lvl makes me happy), intrinsic FR, and Mummy Wrappings...still no tp spell =p i even got through the small cave to the HMV! So I'm figuring its time for my first ever trip to the CoC, oh yea. LVL16, Str19, Le25, Wi20, Dx16, To24, Ch12, Ap9, Ma16, Pe17...already out of skills to lvl though.

previously best character was only lvl ~8 or so, died of magic missiling east in a southerly corridor. Ouch. This is only my 2nd character since then (about a year i didn't play)

Another question: where should i get a good weapon? Im currently stuck with a +0, 1d7+7 Adamantium Longsword, that just doesn't cut it with stronger enemies...

> i could barely hurt the mummy leader

The 'baptism of fire' spell works great against
him, if you have it. As a priest, you should have
found that spell by then. Sometimes things work
out a bit strange though.

> So I'm figuring its time for my first ever trip
> to the CoC, oh yea. LVL16,

At that level, you should be able to make it to
dwarftown quite handily. Not many monsters should
pose a big danger to you. Remember, if you run
into a vortex, casting darkness will keep it from
exploding, while you melee it.

Also remember the almost guaranteed mimic in the
dwarftown shop. At the least, you should set
tactics to coward, before entering. Remember to
pick up the Si on your way, it's in the level
that is 'filled with a strange smell'. It
duplicates and sells for a decent amount of gold.
It's located on a trap, so kick it, then collect it.

> Another question: where should i get a good
> weapon?

The darkforge raid, is an advanced (somewhat
dangerous) way, to get an almost guaranteed GREAT
weapon. I believe it should be safe enough for
your character to pull it off, *IF* you read up
a bit on it, before you do it.

If that option doesn't appeal to you, there is
always Big Punch. It is good, but heavy. To get
it you must complete some dwarf quests first. The
last being the toughest, to kill a greater deamon.
Fortunately, you can sac it on the dwarftown alter
though, so it should be easy enough. Just hope
you get an easy quest monster from Thrundarr :)

> oh, and what is VDDL

The 'V'ery 'D'usty 'D'ungeon 'L'evel.
There is a cave, by the road that leads to the
pyramid. The first level is the DDL, the second
is the VDDL. You will know it when you find it
because it has a zillion teleport traps in it.

Here is the link for the demo I made on raiding
darkforge for the equipment. It shows the method
for getting the teleport wand. I did it with an
exp. level 3 gray elven mindcrafter (VERY weak),
so if you do it right, you should be quite safe.
It is about 5 miniuts long, and ~180 Kilobytes.
http://hyperfileshare.com/d/d64cbb9c

You will need at least 5 charges on the TP wand,
to raid DF. You can charge a wand by dipping it
in a potion of booze. You can get potions of
booze, by giving beggars in Lawenilothehl ~50
gold pieces, and then chatting to them. They will
probably drop only one potion each. So after
chatting with one, lead him out of town, re-enter,
and kill bandits until more beggars are generated.

> how do you get herbs in the HMV?

Generally, herbs are found IN the unremarkable
dungeon, on the way to the HMV. Not in the HMV
itself.

You should have had either bless spell or destroy undead to cast on the mummy leader. If you have neither, and still no ball spells...I vote that you go and do ID 1-2 untill you have more spells...

CoC down to dwarftown is not dangerous at all. Really. If you are unsure about Darkforge, just do dwarftown, ask Elder about portal, then go up and do dwarven graveyard. It at least has a weapon better than that longsword...

Getting a better weapon is also a matter ofluck. Pick up any weapons you find. A simple dagger (10s) might be a wicked dagger of devastation (5d7+6) if you are lucky enough. Any weapon can have these extra words.

However, as a primary spellcaster you should be able to complete the game without any good weapon. If you get the lightning ball spell (called Heavenly fury for priests) you can very easily KILL the guards of darkforge, which should net you a lot of exp as well as the nice items. Minor punishment/magic missile can kill anything, and should be trained big. Just be careful about bouncing it back on yourself, as you know.

i had some wierd crashes with this tactic. basically killing beggars is best idea. or at least making a back up.

I've never had problems with this tactic.
I usually get at least 1 or 2 potions this way,
in every game I play. I get the PoB, lead the
beggar to the wilderness, and later drop them off
in the barbarians glade. I suppose I have never
gotten more than 4 potions this way though. Maybe
crashes occur after doing it extensively. Killing
beggars is quite chaotic, even shooting missiles
past them.

Yea, I dont have a single ball spell, or baptism of fire...my attacks spells are Acid Bolt, Nether Bolt, Heavenly Wrath (i think, its a line of lightning) and Minor Punishment. Don't have the bless spell, but i COMPLETELY forgot about the Dispel Undead spell i have in the pyramid, doh. No herbs yet though.

I'll see about getting that wand of teleportation

Woo registered now...btw, what is this i hear about an FR bug? does that mean that the intrinsic FR i got from a corpse is useless?

You can't gain fire resistance from certain corpses if you already have resistance from another source (something you're wearing, or the elementalist class ability). If you already got it from a corpse then you're fine.

Gah, another question: any idea what the limit on herb boosting your stats is? I have 18 of 19 dex and can't seem to get the next point and 26 of 31 will and 27 of 35 toughness with the same problem...getting blessed, uncursed, and cursed morgia/moss herbs, just not getting there, hrmph.

The herb boosting limit is usually 25. You can
exceed this by utilizing the 'sick' intrinsic.
Use a devil's rose to drop your stats below 25,
ues morgia/moss, then eat a curia mancox herb to
cure yourself.

You can also use starvation tactics, the same way.
This works fine for the dexterity stat, because
you just have to 'u'se the moss. The morgia root
however must be eaten, this sometimes causes
problems (for me at least), because by eating the
morgia, your satiation levels are affected,
possibly causing you to lose the 'starving'
status.

> I have 18 of 19 dex and can't seem to get the
> next point

I don't know what the reason for this is, but
sometimes I notice my PC's stats getting 'stuck'
for a while. When this happens, I just use an
extra morgia/moss, and it usually works. If it
doesn't work for you, you might be wearing some
items that boost your dexterity stat. If so, just
remove the item, and then herb train.

Perhaps you are doing something to abuse the
dexterity stat, if your PC becomes 'overburdened'
even for a few turns, it can interfere with herb
training.

One more thing. Remember to save a few of those
frost bolt spells. You will need 3 castings later,
to make an ice bridge.

Yea, well, i finally died anyways =p

of course, a stupid way, i went onto an altar not realizing it was neutral, tried to drop gold, got a *GET YOUR JUNK OF MY ALTAR* message, and then was sacrficed by a neutral swordsman. Which is funny considering i hadn't fought anything that could really damage me in a while, till i had myself sacrificed. Funny thing is that i knew it was a possibility, but hey, now i wont do it again! (hopefully)

So on to a new character! Think I'll play a bard. Now gotta choose a race

Average skill list by my estimation(i have alchemy, cooking, dodge, backstabbing, literacy, with others)
Giant Raccoon pet!

Regarding herbs the standard method of 8 morgia max and 4 moss max only makes it very probable that yours stats will increase, it is not 100% (18 morgia 6 moss maximizes chances). Also regarding being sacrificed, I have never stepped on a chaotic alter, but im pretty sure I've stepped on a neutral alter in front of neutral npcs and not been sacced, when I had high neutral piety. Am I wrong on that and does it apply to chaotics?

A neutral character won't be sacced on a neutral altar. It's also possible that the other monsters simply didn't notice you, or chose not to sac you in that turn.

With 4 starting talents you should have chosen Boon of the family, Charming and Heir, as bards get blessed seven league boots! They double your movement speed (actually, reduce the energy cost by ½) allowing you to run away from pretty much any monster in the game. Well, maybe next time :)

In my experience, chaotics get sacrificed all the time, piety, getting crowned and such doesn't help at all. Maybe you just got lucky? I think it would be cool though if your god protected you from sacrifices of weak co-aligned monsters if you were crowned, sort of how you get the special message if you try to sacrifice the orb guardians...

Another tip for stat training with herbs: if your stat potential is higher than 25, use/eat as many herbs as you can (100 isn't too much) when your stat is still at 24. This will give a big amount of training to the stat, which might give you two or even three increases. You have to do this while the stat is still at 24 as if it's 25 eating/using the herbs does nothing. 1 or 2 extra points in a stat might not seem like much but it doesn't hurt either.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

There has been a misunderstanding, I meant I was neutral with high piety, and was only wondering if not being sacced was due to alignment or piety, anyway thanks for answering.
