Okay, I'm a new poster, though I've been a frequent lurker in these forums in the past. The first time I played adom was something like 7 years ago and not until now I got past ToEF(big thanks to the numerous threads concerning the Tower here). Now let's all take a moment to celebrate my stupidity.

This kickass character of mine, human elementalist got killed in one of the most annoying ways a char can die. I had trained my Mana by bookcasting Strength of Atlas in the barbarian's glade. I encountered a greater vault of giants, ettins & ogres semideep in the CoC. I wished for some rings of weakness and got my strength up to 68 or sth like that. Much after that, after the blue dragon caves I killed a fomorian giant, which dropped a corpse(you know already how this is going to end, right?). I had'nt noticed my great strength waning at any point as I hadn't become burdened or anything when SoA ended. So I just put on my ring of weakness like always before and blam! you're crushed. Well, lesson learned I guess. Feel free to post your own most annoying deaths.

Does this character deserve to be posted to the untimely deaths- hall of fame?

Ouch... One thing I like about ADOM though is that there's lots of ways to get yourself killed in the late game, and pretty much all of them are down to your own stupidity. After several harsh lessons in the past I have learend to never rely on anything to boost my carrying capacity, and be ultra careful when abusing rings of weakness.

I've got to say, I like that name! I think I have
several game winners by the name of grbh. I may
have even stuck one in the HoF, or was that dhrg,
I can't remember. My own handle 'gut', is in
memory of a gray elven monk. One of the first PC's
that I ever did well with, and really cared about.

About annoying deaths though, I have a pretty
good recent one. I had a PC quite developed, and
due to some help from the RNG, actually had a
shot at beating the game in under 24000 turns.
I had a nice assortment of herb bushes, some
valuable items and such. So, I went to the ID,
hoping to find spellbooks. Well, after climbing
between levels 3 and 4 for a while...I died.

I had become STRAINED! due to picking up items,
while climbing the stairs. I didn't notice the
status change, so I continually lost a few HP's
with each descending stairclimb, until I finally
broke the PC's neck. OOPS! Perhaps your wondering
why I didn't heed the warning of the low HP's
buzz. Well, let's just say that listening to
music while playing ADOM, can be hazardous to
your PC's neck.

Ooh! Ooh! How about mine? I had a hurthling wizard doing pretty good, and tried to cast 'Cure Light Wounds' to heal him up. The trouble is, my shift button doesn't work all the time and I ended up zapping him with a wand of acid, melting him into a puddle.

That reminds me of the time I was picking up
items, with the commands ,a,a,a. Well, I got
distracted, and kept pressing those buttons even
after all of the items had been collected. It
resulted in me 'a'pplying the alchemy skill, and
mixing two ingredients together. The PC was
quickly blasted into the afterlife.

I've been currently trying to make things work with human paladins. Well, one of them got a little careless and encountered two wererats in the Small Cave and I think my PC was at level 7. Giant rats everywhere...couldn't get to wererats...
You pick up the Wand of Do Nothing.
'z'...
Nothing happens.
't'...
The Wand of Do Nothing misses the kestral. Come on, it's a Wand of Do Nothing!

; also works for picking up all items in one space.

I use Ctrl a 5 to pick up everything. I usually try to get out of the smc before level 6 if I can. Great place to start though. I did die once to the alchemy thing when I was repeatedly reading scroll a really fast.

My most annoying death would have to be psuedo identifying a bunch of crap in dwarftown and then tryin on all my uncursed stuff, till I put on some armour of hate and get shopkeeper'd to death.

Yeah those un-id clothes of hate are a pretty harsh instantkill for innocent PCs... thats why its best to nip up the stairs with your stuff, between the altar and the shop.

I always hit bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb now on my pickup list instead of aaaaaaa. Then I get stuck with one item left. I've actually died the aaaaaaaaaaalchemy death twice *sigh* slow learner

Ctrl - p lets you select and de-select the items you want to pick up from a list.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Yes, that is the command I normally use, but the
, command is sometimes faster. Also, there is a
wierd bug with the Ctrl d command, and I suppose
that has unfairly biased me against Ctrl p. I
still use it, but I don't consider it to be 100%
reliable. I don't know if it is an official bug
report, but it's easy to test.

Just use a PC that has collected a large amount
of wands. Try to sell all of the more useless
wand to a shop, by means of Ctrl d. You will wind
up selling, not your useless wands, but instead
your useful ones. I have had some really
frustrating experiences with this, so I am now
VERY careful when using the Ctrl commands.
