Brimstone Man
Enter ToEF at level 1, retrieve the Chaos Orb of Elemental Fire and leave. No other locations can be visited. There is a 'wuss' version, which allows leaving the ToEF to single wilderness square. For added challenge, do not use altars. This challenge game has not been completed, though few close attempts have been made.

Anyone have a clue as to how anyone got even moderately close to acomplishing this? Best I've done is killing a single fire lizard.

As far as I know I'm one of the people that's gotten furthest with this, mostly because I'm mad enough to keep trying. My high score list is full of failed attempts. It's a fun way to throw away a character - overall a shorter version of the whole game :P

In my best game I was playing the wuss version with a hurthling elementalist and got two of the levels pacified with worms. Two starting rings of FR and Immune to Pain made the heat damage fairly manageable early on, and a fire drake corpse later on made me immune. Frost bolt took easy care of any threats. Was training up strength carrying seeds (from Survival on the outside square), and training Mana by casting all the fire-based spells, whilst killing monsters on the non-pacified levels for loot and xp. Got to level 17 when I died from starvation just after leaving the tower - I had run to the exit, hoping I could get to the wilderness square in time to use Survival. Was 1 turn too late. And stupid me forgot I had prayers to spend.

Another guy did a "proof of concept" of the wuss version with a hurthling monk once. Scummed falcon starsign (for survival) and ring of fire resistance, then save-scummed to victory using thrown rocks. Biggest problem he said was the wyrm - the confusion meant he died a lot.

Some things to consider:
- Heat damage is extreme. With two rings of fire resistance you take 2 HP damage per turn. Immune to Pain talent takes this down to 1. A corpse and two items (or 1 item and ItP talent) means no damage. Elementalist level 6 class power unfortunately does not work.
- You have 2 starting prayers. These are basically used to survive a few turns till you find a corpse. Killing things quickly means you gain a few levels, get more hp and can live in the heat a little longer, so it's best if you can kill things before resorting to your prayers.
- Pretty much all of your initial equipment will burn. Only people who can still harm things without equipment are beastfighters, monks and elementalists.
- Elementalists have a natural advantage in that they start with frost bolt. At level 1 with some luck you can kill anything in the tower in two hits (though grues shrug off bolts a lot). Dragons, giants and demons can all take you to level 6 in a single kill. Elementalists always start with 1 ring of FR, and could have 2.
- Gnomes and hurthlings level fast, making them nice choices. To be honest I haven't tried much else. Gnomes have better magic, and the ventriloquism could be potentially handy. If you intend long-term scumming then pickpocketing every giant and demon might potentially lead to a fireproof blanket (fat chance though - they'd kill you if you tried pickpocketing them anyway). Hurthlings have food preservation and a bit more toughness, and the potential to have a cursed ring of FR.
- Immune to Pain costs a lot of talents to get, which might mean forgoing Treasure Hunter if you want to have it straight away. It also requires 15 Wi and To, which many chars don't have. Gnomes tend to be short on To, whilst Hurthlings are short on Wi (though Falcon or Tree born Hurthlings are likely to have both).
- Monsters are obviously extremely dangerous. Grues will shrug off bolts more times than you can be comfortable with, and you'll frequently be casting out of HP just to stay alive (HP that's being whittled away by the heat too). Fire giant kings are the worst - they can kill you by throwing rocks from outside your line of sight. Many a promising char has died from that.
- Digging through to the temple would be very hard without wands. With some luck you could have enough piety to pray for a pick axe and not have it burn or break by the time you get through. Monks can kick through walls at a certain level.
- Killing the Wyrm is impossible.

Taking the challenge too seriously will drive you mad. Of course you have to be insane to try this challenge anyway... The RNG taunted me horribly with my last attempt - surge of power on the first level, turned out to be BoW. The regen would have made the challenge way easier. But it was guarded by a dark elven priestess who summoned highly experienced large spiders that took 5 bolts each to kill. No chance... Any other guardian monster and I could have had such a good time :(

Narcolepcy:

You can do much better than that. Start a
drakeling elementalist. They have no chance of
winning, but you will get a feel for the challenge
that way. Your speed is like ~200, so you can use
run and bolt tactics.

I once was doing that in ADOM 1.0.0, and killed
a red dragon immidiately upon entering the tower.
It dropped a wand of wishing 3 charges, which was
ultimately useless for a drakeling. I think that
character was easily killed, by an out of line
of sight flying rock, even after the wishes.

When I try this challenge, I don't enter a
wilderness square, but I do exit the tower, for
healing purposes. I wonder if that counts for
a 'wuss' version?

That beats my best by a fair clip, it was in
version 1.0.0. I forget the exp. level of the PC,
but it was a troll elementalist. An altar was
generated on the first level, and I was able to
rely heavily on prayer, for healing and food.
That one ultimately died on one of the other
levels, I forget how.

Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

I had a drakeling wizard who started with a book of cure critical wounds and frostbolt, was healing myself to full casting off hp, but I died the first turn after casting frostbolt, dumb idea anyway as you'd just run outa castings. The wuss part is in the leaving of the tower.

By wilderness square it means the tower square on the map. This can be used for either healing or the survival skill.

I had another pretty good char going once with bracers of regen and an altar. Ended up killed by a fire giant king that threw a rock at me from outside my line of sight. *sigh*

How many plant seeds do you think it would take to get crowned? Been using a gnome that started with itp, but haven't gotten a single corpse yet. Got a guy to lvl 9 with 8 pv in fireproof equip and a 2handed eternium sword with +20 damage, but died due to no corpses.

I just made my brimstone Gnome Elementalists(started with 5talents-heir,hardy,tough skin,15to,15wi,15le,18ma) to 27lvl o.0...Well i had 180ish powerpoints,160ish life, eternium 2h sword, helberd of defense,2drag scales, altar(unfortunetly in the corner which made me almost impossible to crown w/o sacrificing monsters- drag gold doubling also impossible due to quick gold melting on the ground :( )...Obviously all elementalist powers are useless(which made me sad :( ) and lightning ball/ice ball castings are terribly low(even on that level i couldnt get 50 of each)...Died due to red worm mob effect(killed 500ish)...No problems at all-fire giant kings with halberd of def, armor and coward tactic still hit but acceptable damage :) )But those fire worms-one probably with 6attacks at least and terrifying damage, the one that killed me suprisingly didnt fall to frost bolt(1st time i saw o.0 ).Food-no problems,8divine interentions-two on life due to worm struggling and rest on food at the beggining ).5locations-4 wilderness(but i escaped :) ).I was playing at ancardia so you can check whole gameplay ).Why i didnt go to wyrm on that level?Well altar made me obsessed with crowning (which would made the things easier with doze of luck ) but got to very close only :( .I figured i made mistake and could try to pray for pickaxes constantly each time i get enough piety to do so.With several pickaxes it ought to work ;) .And i had ring of mental stability(dont think i could resist conf with that thing but it should also help). One book generated on my way("oFirebolt- that was most usefull thing i found so far o.0 ).If it only was bouncing spell(stunning, light bold, magic missile) i would have relatively high chance to kill wyrm. Once again i would need very high piety to have 10ish prayers (i was shock and acid immune and fire/cold resistant-do you think piety overloop would take all my stuff dissappear or only cursed? )

I'm very impressed! Any idea which ttyrec file on the server it was?

I assume you got full resistance from a corpse? Altar was a lucky find for food - this challenge may be nigh impossible without it.
