Hi,

Running a Orcish Barbarian at the moment, just cleared out the air temple and on D40. Good equipment executor, GoGS, 7LBs but only level 21. Haven't had any real problems yet, but not sure if I should backup and prepare or run to end game. Haven't got this far before so not sure what to do.

Thinking of:

1. Clearing the rift for xp, haven't been there yet.

2. Back to Dwarf town to smith up items, not sure how many ingots I have stashed.

3. Find Bulp's mum and kill her. Do I have to have chatted to Blup to find her on a water square in wilderness. Never done this before.

Any other suggestions appreciated or encouragement to go to end game.

Cheers,
Pete

It's kind of hard to know, without more info.
Please give a .vlg file to go by. Just press
the ) key, that will create a vlg file in your
adom folder. Open it in a text editor, and snip
out the irrelevant stuff (like kill list and
so on.)

Post it on this thread with the tags (PRE) and
(/PRE) at the begining and end of it. Just
replace the ( and ) with [ and ]. That will
make it easier to read. I don't see how you got
that deep in the CoC, without gaining more
exp. levels. You must have really high speed.

Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

Just killed the ancient stone beast. Have more equipment stashed up in Ogre cave.

Should I remove bulging cranium corruption or do you think there is a chance I could start learning spells?

You're a Barbarian. What would you need spells for? All the advantages of spells can be perfectly replaced with the ability to land sound whackings on the head.

There's no particular need to remove the corruption though - I'd save my removal in case one of the really bad corruptions comes along.

Drats, I was hoping to see your wand list. Oh,
well, I'll try anyway. There is one option open
to you for gaining some exp. levels very quickly.
Kill Sharad Waador the AKW.

Sharad is a kamic being, so whacking him will doom
you. Contrary to what the guidebook says, he does
not see invisible, which makes him an easy kill.
He is worth about a gazillion exp. points, and
poses no danger to you at all, if you have the right
equipment.

You have the ring of invisibility, so you are set
there. Only need wands of magic missile now. Even if
you only have one lonely wand, it is still possible.
You will just have to charge it multiple times to
get the job done. I wish I could give you an idea of
how many zaps it will take, but I think that it
varies from character to character. I would say have
at least twenty, maybe more. It's well worth using
the wand charges, for the exp. levels.

Be careful with magic missiles though, they bounce
around. Also, if you want Needle, you have to do
the BDC quest before killing Sharad.

I would advise against fighting any Big Scary Dragons if that's your best play to date. It's easy to make a mistake, even if you know all the theory (for example, it's good to remember that Blup's mom has high PV and regeneration and because of that killing her requires more than a scroll of darkness - ie. a good weapon).

I think your safest option is to learn smithing, use the pickaxe to get some ore, smelt it, wait a bit for skill increases and then smith up your equipment a bit. Then you would be well on the way to a win. Experience levels should come quickly in the depths of CoC.

"gazillion xp" for "easy kill"... "smith up your equipment a bit" ("a bit", yeah right)... Have you all been seduced by the easy path to power?

DESCEND, KICK ASS, and BARELY SURVIVE. That's the way!

That's exactly the point, why make the game so tough (particularly the beginning) when the real challenge will come from the players own decisions? :-p

Believe me, I know all about that. Recently being
toasted by the Archmage about half a dozen times.
Do you really suggest descending to take on the
Archmage at exp. level 21? And you call me
masochist! : )

Sorry the molochs got you though Pete. It would
be pretty tough with a barbarian, to keep them
from picking up a spare moloch armor.

My method turns out to be still safer than the emperor moloch wish, apparently...

For me, there are two rules when I play ADOM:

1. Have fun.
2. Don't die.

In that order.

Smtihing up equipment, making all the enemies pushovers by getting level 50 - not fun. Barely surviving a heated battle armed mostly with your superior wit and sense of strategy and tactics - fun.

Start playing Brimstone Man - it's like a really shortened version of the main game. Play for 50 turns and inevitably die. There may be some glimmer of hope for some promising characters, but the fate is the same for all...

Shame on the moloch death, Pete, but personally I think you were being a little greedy :P

Wishing for the emperor moloch is something only trolls with god-appetite should attempt... because it's the most dangerous option for getting experience. It's manageable, even easy, if you're 100% prepared, but if you're only prepared in 99%... you'll die.

I would also add that actually closing the gate would probably be easier for a level 21 guy than molochs... I once walked into the Mana Temple with a level 27 hurthling archer and walked out 9 xp levels richer. Still died a horrible, ghost-related death on D:50, though, but that was due to sheer stupidity on my part (no, really. saving ammo on D:50? Why? WHY did I think of that then? :( )

Can Blup's Mom see invisible or fight in darkness? If not, then I think she will chew you up and spit you out as chum for the sharks.

I have never beaten her with a non-cheated character, but then, I don't do darkness or invisible when fighting -- I only use them to run away -- I figure that if the monsters weren't able to fight in the dark, my character would not be able to either.

No, she can't fight in the darkness. That's how most people kill her. If she runs you can summon her back.

She can't see invisible, but that won't help much.

Caladriel - while some monsters can't, some can fight in the darkness. You're one of those that can.
Being fair has nothing to do with it. You don't go into melee with a greater moloch just because he can't cast spells and shoot PC slaying missiles :P

Not really. 500 hps and a good penetrating weapon is enough.
Or a beastfighter with 600-700 hps, rings of slaying and find weakness.

GM's have a walking pattern like the EG. It is
possible to do the 'dance of death' with them, even
at a relatively low exp. level. If you don't mind
spending a number of turns memorizing their
patterns.
